Isuzu D-Max – ads for 2nd-gen surface on oto.my

isuzu-d-max-uk

If you’re a regular reader of paultan.org, you know the drill when it comes to imminent launches of new cars in Malaysia – car gets spotted (usually more than once) or teased, ads start to spring up on our sister classifieds domain oto.my offering indicative pricing and specs, before the whole affair finally comes to rest in the launch itself – at times not without a brochure leak or two somewhere in between.

In the case of the second-gen Isuzu D-Max, it’s pretty much been a waiting game – the pick-up truck made its world debut in Thailand back in September 2011. It was to be a full 18 months later before we spotted one at JPJ, and shortly after we saw another that looked very much like it on the road.

But you know what they say – better late than never. We now have three separate listings from the same seller for the 4×2 manual, 4×4 manual and 4×4 auto (click on the links to view the ads in full), stating indicative prices of RM70k, 85k and 100k respectively. All are powered by a 136 hp/320 Nm 2.5 litre VGS turbodiesel and both manual and auto ‘boxes offer five speeds.

The second-gen D-Max sits on a new platform called i-GRIP, or Isuzu Gravity Responsive Intelligent Platform. Isuzu says its body is 42% stiffer than before, resulting in better ride and handling. More information, as well as what our northern neighbours get, can be found here. Not long now!

if 4×4 auto around 100k, then around 106k can get Navara or Triton VGT..not much difference. Or maybe Isuzu got advantage in term of better reliability?

    • Looking at the hardwares, this isuzu is closer to the non-vgt triton(2.5 liter, 136ps, 314nm) than the vgt. The triton is selling for much lesser than 100k with all those promotions going around. Perhaps the 100k is for a high-spec model.

In term of reliability, i’ve been using a triton 2.5 auto for almost 4 years now so far no major problems or downtime.

maybe i’d go for ford ranger. hp might be lower, but torque is higher..smaller cc=cheaper roadtax.

    • I will choose Dmax because its engine using 3rd generation commonrail which is more durable & better quality.

Triton up to VGT using 2nd generation commonrail. The fuel efficiency surely lower than Dmax if driving on same condition with Dmax.

Thai got EUROIV Diesel, no wonder any diesel can launch there instead Malaysia.

    • Well, I went through many types of investigations for diesel characteristics. I believe this model engines has been went through a little modification on the fuel system & injectors to comply with EURO 2M Malaysia. EURO 4 is really low sulphur therefore when you fill EURO 2, the injectors & fuel line can be clog. Just like Navara case. But the lubrication for wear & tear will be a little better.

The 4×2 has the same engine as the rest? That is really tempting. The current Dmax 4×2 has a really sluggish engine, very difficult even to overtake.

    • Because that engine is non commonrail 4JA1-L. Its originally built in 1980s but went through many types of modifications. However, this engine like ironman horse. REALLY DURABLE!

It’s the new D-Max a twin of the Colorado?

D-Max and Colorado has joint development but the engine lineup and offerings are entirely different. For Colorado, the Duramax engine 2.8 is used, pushing out 470Nm.

      Anyway, they share similar interior.

Compared to other trucks, the only advantage is it has ESP (if based on ads).

The other two trucks that I know comes with ESP are the Ranger 3.2 WT and Colorado 2.8 Duramax High-spec auto.

  • For me, I would recommends fellow friends to buy truck with medium hp & torque. Seriously high hp & torque engines are required better quality diesel. It doesn’t matter lubrication of sulphur are much less in better quality diesel because the fuel system has laminated with a layer of seal for protections of wear & tear. So high hp & torque for EURO2M will cause problem as time to come. Like the high speed diesel (navara, triton vgt, colorado) engines produce black smoke when on high acceleration. That shouldn’t be happen as common rail technology actually impossible to produce black smoke. Look at 2KD-FTV 102HP & Isuzu Dmax current with low hp & torque are very tough. Because engine has no stress. Its emmission level just EURO 2 where as those high end engines EURO 4 to EURO 5.
