Martorell is embracing its motorsports heritage with this new SEAT Leon Cup Racer prototype, to be shown at the GTI Wörthersee meet in Austria this weekend. What heritage, I hear you ask? The Spanish company has over 40 years of racing history apparently, most recently winning back-to-back titles in the 2008 and 2009 FIA World Touring Car Championships.

The Leon Cup Racer showcases the brand’s motorsport future, and gives a preview of SEAT’s touring car racer that will be prepared for a wide range of racing series worldwide. It will be the first of six “extremely fiery and individually equipped” versions of the Ibiza and Leon models in the company’s plight for motorsport success.

Based on the five-door Leon, the Cup Racer looks mighty good with its powerful stance given by the 40 cm wider track and large 18-inch racing wheels. The matte grey paintjob with orange accents finishes the visually stunning figure, while keeping production car’s signature features such as the distinctive full-LED headlights and roofline contour intact.

A plethora of aerodynamic aids are integrated into the front apron, flared wheel arches and roof spoiler for optimum downforce. The interior has gone through a more extreme transformation. Race-specification roll cage, bucket seats with HANS head-protection system have all been fitted, along with a multi-function steering wheel and the high-resolution TFT display behind it.

Under the hood lies a turbocharged 2.0 litre engine with 330 hp and 350 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front through a six-speed DSG gearbox and an electronically controlled differential lock. The endurance-spec SEAT Leon Cup Racer will have a sequential racing transmission and a mechanical diff lock for €25,000 over the €70,000 base car.

SEAT plans to offer the Leon Cup Racer to customer teams as early as the 2014 season, targeting a broad palette of racing series – from the ETTC to the VLN Endurance Cup on the Nürburgring. WTCC versions with a 1.6 litre engine will be introduced later.
