Subaru BRZ and Forester spotted at JPJ Putrajaya

Subaru BRZ and Forester spyshot

It looks like it’s going to be a double Subaru blast from Motor Image in the not-too-distant future. The Subaru BRZ and new fourth-gen Forester have been spotted undergoing evaluation at JPJ Putrajaya – reader Harfizi Abu Hassan sent in this snap of the twinkly twosome together.

Ads for both the BRZ and Forester have of course popped up on oto.my, with that for the BRZ listing a RM239,800 price tag, and that for the Forester touting an indicative retail price of RM198,800, as well as pre-owned price of RM178,800 and a pre-launch price of RM189,800. As always with ads, the actual pricing might be different than that stated early on.

The arrival of the Forester comes not too long after its regional launch in Taiwan, back in December. Meanwhile, the introduction of the BRZ is more than well due – we were told back in 2011 that the car would be set for Q2/Q3 2012, and during a first impressions drive in Singapore in April last year this was pushed to Q4. Looks like this is it then.

I saw BRZ billboard alongside LDP towards puchong, just after descending from Motorola Bridge.

  • Toyota’s Service centers are better distributed across the country, their spares are easy to get and the brand is better accepted here. So how can Subaru sell the the BRZ in a country where the virtually-identical-in-specs-looks-and price 86 is a more obvious choice? Make it manual only Subaru, than it’ll better distinguish the enthusiast and the show-off, I have seen many 86 parking, none are manual.

As for the Forester, RM200k for a budget Cayenne doesn’t sound too bad.

    • BRZ – 86 spares are identical, finding spares aren’t much an issue. But you are right on one thing, BRZ is better off as a manual.

Comparing Forester to a Cayenne… you definitely need to go test drive a Cayenne.

      • On the Forester, the Forester with the 2.0DIT and CVT does the century sprint at around 6.4 sec. Out-sprinting the base cayenne and cayenne diesel (7.1 and 7.4sec respectively) and is only 0.4sec behind the Cayenne S. Yes, you may not get German technical brilliance and quality but you do get what the Japanese are(were?) fame for, budget performance. Keeping pace with one of the fastest German SUV on sale for less than half the price, you’re not getting anything better than that .

And if you’re going to argue about handling, remember the forester still is AWD and weighs much less than the German house-on-wheels. Furthermore looks-on-looks, both cayenne and forester are not winning any beauty contest, thou they are still waaay better than their predecessor’s design. So budget Cayenne , yeah pretty much what the Forester is.

BRZ owners can just service at any Tan Chong Service Center. No biggie.

No turbo is a big no, because of the presence of 86 and because of acceleration.
Add sunroof + turbo at this price, then it is ok.
Peugeot & Megane are better choices?
Focus ST and Golf GTI lack sportscar look.
Forester pricing is ok, 6.4 sec is good.

That is because most of them just ride the name of 86 (not even ride on Initial D hype, as all cars featured are in manual transmissions), not the real car enthusiasts who like to race or drift the car during weekends.

  • Subaru BRZ – RM 239,800 (automatic)
    Toyolta 86 – RM 243,015 (manual)

    Toyolta, overpriced as always…

In Japan, Forester DIT 2.0XT is priced at the same range with Subaru BRZ.

    Subaru BRZ Type S 6MT: 2,793,000 YEN.
    Forester DIT 2.0XT: 2,831,850 YEN.
    Subaru BRZ Type S 6AT: 2,871,750 YEN.

Cheaper than a Forester! What makes 86/BR-Z special is cost less than a GTi, drive miles better than a GTi. But idiotic pricing in Malaysia ruined these 2.

So high for a Japanese CBU to sell at RM240k??
Its meant to be an relatively affordable Japanese sports coupe… and it is not even that fast… why oh why Subaru and Toyota? Realistically 86/BR-Z should be around RM160-180k as Subaru/Toyota have JMEPA arrangement etc an extra advantage over European CBU… The pricing should be way below RC-Z, Megane RS 265, Golf GTi, Focus ST and the continental brigade but somehow UMW/Tan Chong are not seizing the opportunity to be more competitive than this lot…

The new Forester XT is a fantastic car, but represented by a bad agent in Motor Image. When buying a Subaru car, you do not know when is the best time to make a booking. The new price for the XT went from RM 139,800 (offer for bookings before Chinese New Year) to RM 139,800 plus RM 2,000 service vouchers (for bookings made immediately after CNY) to mid-April’s RM 134,800 (for bookings before 5th May). It seems you don’t need normal market forces of asset depreciation for a Subaru in Malaysia; the agent does it for you.
