Tata Nano makes ASEAN debut, heads to Myanmar

Nano

The little critter known as the Tata Nano is hitting ASEAN streets, though not anywhere close to these parts. Myanmar is the destination, and sales of the compact were supposed to have begun there last week.

The first deliveries won’t be until a few months, and the Nano won’t be cheap – according to a report, it will sell for around US$11,500 after tax. It’s a rather staggering jump from the original US$1,800 retail price for the car in India.

The model heading to Myanmar will be the range-topping variant, complete with air-conditioning and powered windows. At this point, the car can only be purchased by cash through the two showrooms available in Yangon. The report adds that more than 70 Nanos have been ordered for use as taxis in the capital.

*My friend who is friend with a friend of Vin Diesel’s friend’s cat said that this car will make an appearence in Fast and Furious 7, being driven by Dom himself to chase a Dodge Viper.

  • The Chinese started making cars in the 50s and 60s, whereas the Indians were there well before WWII. Yet, the Chinese are already ahead of the Indians in every way. China’s car market is growing far faster than India’s today and Chinese cars have made it into the Top 10 best sellers in a few countries in Europe and South America. I’m guessing Chinese cars will reach the level of the Japanese and Koreans by the early 2020s and surpass the Europeans by the 2030s (mostly because of cheaper pricing). India is hopeless. The Tata Nano is their pride and joy, yet China can already brag about their luxury brand Qoros. Even Proton and Perodua are far ahead of Indian cars, all things considered.

    • I beg to differ as the size of car market does not suggest the quality of cars made in a partcular country. Globally only Thailand and India are considered small cars export hub. India exports global small cars such as Suzuki Alto, Nissan Micra and Duster SUV. Not to say that Chinese cars are inferior, some chinese cars are sold by GM in India and are also of good quality.

      • I’m sorry, but you clearly weren’t paying attention.

India-manufactured cars can only sell well overseas if they carry a Suzuki, Nissan, Dacia etc. logo. Is Tata or Mahindra successful overseas ? No.

On the other hand, China’s OWN flesh and blood companies like Great Wall, Geely, Chery, Speranza etc. are making waves in the third world and first world alike. They don’t need a Toyota or BMW badge to do it.

Do you see the difference now ?

    • If Nano comes to Burma, it will beat the hell out of Chinese made Cherry which had bad reputation not because of its quality but because of it’s bad publicity of recall in Australia.

I spotted one in Seremban last Saturday. A green color. Can’t see the number plate though as it was driven on the opposite side and was quite fast.

    What a surprising encounter.

Well the basic no-frills nano is $1.8k so as stated, this is the top range model @ 11k, near 10k difference for rims, aircon and radio?

Anyways, what i am most concerned about is how they are only accepting cash. This is Myanmar we’re talking about, even most Malaysians can’t pay RM35k cash!
