JPJ to issue high-security driving licence from July 15

driving licenceNext month will see the introduction of a high-security driving licence, which will feature improved security measures and durability. The new style licence replaces the current laminated one, which has been around since 1989.

According to reports, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) will begin issuing the licence from July 15 at all it offices nationwide, though post office branches will only start doing so from November.

Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the new licences will be printed using thermal transfer technology, and that a high security holographic layer would protect the driver’s information and photograph.

He said that the details on it would be printed in both Bahasa Malaysia and English to allow international recognition, and added that the switch to the new licence will not involve an additional fee – it will be maintained at RM30 a year.

The new licence will be implemented for all private vehicles owners, including car and motorcycle users for both probationary (P) and normal driving licence categories, the reports add. Switching to the new one is not compulsory as long as the current one is still valid.

      • It is no longer a proposal. It has been in use for quite a number of years. I renewed my driving license at a JPN office about 1.5 years ago, and the license has been inside my IC since then. Just that JPJ does not seem to work with JPN, and it has its own plan……

        • By the way, I demonstrated a smartphone app to JPJ early this year for everyone to read the driving license on IC, but it keeps delaying the approval and even refuses to answer my subsequent query delivered by courier, although it bears no risk and no cost at all. I do not wish to speculate too much about the reason behind. It is available free of charge :

          • Hi Kent, the app did not have sufficient feedback to users initially. Novices who did not read the description or even see the few screensots just clicked on buttons expecting something to happen. When they did not get anything, they gave negative comments. It was only later when I was free enough that a toast message was added to remind users they need to connect a supported smartcard reader first.

As for why JPJ has not given its approval, it has nothing to do with the reader absence feedback. It saw the app showing license details read through a smartcard reader in the entire demonstration.

I think the most critical flaw is that you do need an external device to make it work. Consumers expect apps to work out of box. Hope you find a solution to it.

I disagreed and he argued that he could issue a summons. I challenged him to as I knew I was right. He went to his superior, they talked and let me go.
The licence in the MYKAD was from Abdullah Badawi’s era I think. I used to forget when the expiry was but I then decided to renew on my birthday, so that sorted it. Now I think the birthday thing is across the board, right?

Kertas dgn plastik pun x terbuang.

Lain kali, jangan cepat sangat nak backing Be End. Marah2 x tentu pasal. Pikir jap, baru reply.

    • There’s a reason behind it. It let say you were to travel to anywhere in the world, they cannot read your driver license duly because of the chip is not standardize worldwide. A friend of mine in Germany and New Zealand are also using this concept, which does not involve your drivers license with IC. Hope this justifues

The MYKAD licence only works withing Malaysia. You think other counries can scan our IC? If you Travel, you need a seperate licence.

I feel what we should do is make sure our driving licence is as secure as the MYKAD and then make it so that only those without licences have to carry ICs. Then we only need to carry one card

If the government implement driving license into IC then it would be a problem hiring cars overseas when we travel. Even now our driving license has no DOB..I always get question where is my DOB.

What piece of crap is this?”.
So, and the end of the day she got a piece of sh*t summons because of the police can’t read bahasa Malaysia. Ada paham x betapa pentingnya 2 bahasa? bukan bermakna kami letak english tu kami x suka bahasa malaysia. sila ubah mindset anda. sekian terima kasih..

I think if you applied for International Driving Permit (IDP) from JPJ, it is written in English.

And please, even if your Malaysian driving license is written in English, I don’t think the officer wouldn’t issue a summon to you in USA.

All that matters to you is Malaysia.

When I am overseas, I have to use my Canadian driving licence. Malaysian license cannot use.

Sure, you can apply for an international driving licence from JPJ and you pay like what 160?? to the government for some cheap paper booklet that you’d be embarrassed to show people.

    V2,

Before 1989 the drivers licenses were plastic and reasonably secure for that time period, in fact better than the IC of the time. Why it changed to something that looks like you can forge in your spare time is beyond me. Then as now I’m sure there is some hidden agenda.

This is beyond a piece of plastic.

Competency has always been the important factor. Anybody can renew rm30 per year, but i knew some people seldom drive or can only drive auto, lack awareness, road hogging, ‘forgot’ to signal when changing lane or taking a turn, snake driving, stop in the middle of the road to drop/take their kids at school when there’s ample space by the roadside, tailgating, racing and many other violation.

Have we done enough to make sure that rm30 per year plastic goes to the right, competent person, that would help reducing road fatalities?

why don’t just make it a compulsory to permanent driving license renewal at 10 years then stated in IC, same 1 card. Then give P license a card like current version.

  • 2013 already still left 7 more years to 2020. but we still use after merdeka type of implementation. Separate IC, driving license, ATM cards, Marriage card, debit/credit cards, at least majority of us bring 10 cards per wallet. Now is the SOC world, system on chip, and also RFID. Why dont we put all in one electronic card. If lost one we can have a replace all together in one time based on gov data base. no need for us go every gov offices or banks to replace one by one if our wallet is lost. Very convinent. reduce use of plastic/paper material also…save our world. Go green…
