New Aston Martin Vanquish Volante carbonfibres up

We’ve featured plenty of the second-generation Aston Martin Vanquish already – as it was first unveiled, its details revealed, shown in motion and lastly, as a special Centenary Edition celebrating the brand’s platinum jubilee. Now comes the convertible version of the British super GT, the Aston Martin Vanquish Volante.

It’s the first Volante Aston Martin to feature a full carbonfibre body, and it runs on the latest VH Generation4 platform that uses much of the ultra-stiff Carbon architecture used in the limited-run One-77 hypercar. No question then, that this is the strongest Volante body structure in the brand’s 100-year history.

Aston claims that the Vanquish Volante retains the coupe’s dynamic character and sporting capability. It uses the same AM11 6.0 litre V12 engine with 565 hp/620 Nm and six-speed automatic Touchtronic 2 gearbox and controlled, near perfect 51:49 weight distribution to go as well as it looks.

It weighs just nine kilograms more than the hard-top Vanquish, and retains an identical 4.1 second 0-100 km/h time. Top speed is down though, to 293 km/h from the coupe’s 295 km/h.

The fabric soft-top takes just 14 seconds to fold up or down (should be enough to beat the Mazda MX-5 in its own race). When stowed, it sits beneath a tonneau and decklid that have been aerodynamically tuned for optimum performance. The windscreen, meanwhile, is now full height; the glass running up to meet the fabric roof for a cleaner transition – a first for Aston Martin.

So it’s faster, more dynamic and better looking than before. Occupants will be better served too, with a luxurious 2+2 cabin and a larger boot than before. 279 litres may not sound like much, until you find out it’s a 50% improvement over previous-gen Volantes.

Everything else, as it goes, is identical to the Vanquish coupe, right down to the interior, tech options, massive Brembo Carbon Ceramic Matrix (CCM) brakes and Aston Martin’s Adaptive Damping System (ADS) with Normal, Sport and Track modes.

Check out the video below. Beautiful car, sexy girl, and a soundtrack to die for. Ah, the good life.
