Aston Martin debuts new Gulf livery for Le Mans 2013

One of just two truly iconic liveries in sports car racing history (the other being the Martini Racing colours that just made its comeback with Porsche earlier this year), Gulf’s orange on blue war paint, is getting an update for this year’s Le Mans race.

The new Gulf livery was unveiled on an Aston Martin Racing Vantage GTE, ready to take on the Circuit de la Sarth this weekend. It is the winning entry for Aston Martin and Gulf’s livery design competition, inspired by the change in atmosphere as day gives way to night during the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Drivers of the #97 Vantage GTE selected Briton Jonathan Wesley’s ‘daylight to dusk’ design from the hundreds of entries received. The car is one of five AMR entries competing in the 24-hour race, but the only one to carry the competition-winning design.

The rest will continue with the traditional Gulf livery, which the team has run for the past five years (including the ill-fated AMR-One project in 2011) and three more to come. Racing fans, what do you think of the new Gulf livery?

Preferring to drive cars rather than desks, Hafriz Shah ditched his suit and tie to join the ranks of Malaysia’s motoring hacks. A car’s technical brilliance is completely lost on him, appreciating character-making quirks more. When not writing this ego trip of a bio, he’s usually off driving about aimlessly, preferably in a car with the right combination of three foot pedals and six gears.
