Citroen – and Loeb – to enter the FIA WTCC in 2014

Citroën’s focus may be loosening on the WRC, where it has certainly dominated for the past decade (nine driver and eight manufacturer titles since 2003), but there’s no lack of ambition – if anything, the view is of new horizons and challenges.

The automaker has confirmed its full participation in the FIA World Touring Car Championship from 2014 onwards, with Sébastien Loeb confirmed as one of the two drivers in the team.

Citroën Racing’s move into track racing will see the race cars dedicated to the tarmac task, and while much of it will be starting from scratch, a large part of the existing framework will be re-utilised, including the DS3 WRC’s 1.6 litre direct injection turbo engine.

Work has begun in the marque’s Versailles technical centre, with first tests of the new car already in place. The company reiterated that it’s still committed to rallying and will continue to work hard to try and get the best possible result in 2013, but you can’t but help think that one eye is already elsewhere. Will Loeb blaze it the same way he did WRC, one wonders?
