Next-gen Porsche Panamera – early details emerge

panamera-render-1

Recently launched here in facelifted form, the Porsche Panamera is an exceedingly strong seller for the sportscar maker. Over 100,000 units have been sold in just four years, more than the company initially forecasted. Now, new details of the next-gen Porsche Panamera (rendering by Theophilus Chin pictured above), which isn’t due until 2016 at the earliest, have emerged.

We’ve already reported that it will be based on Volkswagen Group’s new MSB architecture (translates from German into Modular Standard Platform), which it will share with future Bentley models. A premium front engine, rear drive platform, the MSB base will utilise a complex combination of lightweight aluminium and high-strength steel.

The next Panamera is likely to keep close to its current elongated hatchback form with four doors, though the range is expected to grow with new introductions of estate/shooting brake and smaller coupe or cabriolet variants in the future – the first of which has already been officially previewed by last year’s Panamera Sport Turismo Concept.

Today’s wide range of engine choices will be carried over in revised forms, and the S E-Hybrid engine is expected to be featured more prominently come the next-gen model, dropping the Audi V6 in favour of Porsche’s own 3.0 litre turbo V6. Weight will come down too, with the hybrid much closer to the standard variants than it is now (nearly 300 kg heavier).

    Shine bright like a diamond.
    Cost more than a diamond.
