The recent 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb event, which living rally legend Sebastian Loeb won in record breaking style, saw Mitsubishi field two MiEV Evolution II all-electric four wheel-drive vehicles, upgraded with lessons learnt from last year’s outing.
Driven by six-time Pikes Peak motorcycle champ Greg Tracy and Dakar winner Hiroshi Masuoka, the MiEV Evolution II adds on a S-AWC (Super All-Wheel Control) integrated vehicle dynamics control system to a two-front/two-rear four-motor drivetrain. These, together with a lighter and more aerodynamic body, has resulted in a significant improvement in driving dynamics.
Both drivers raced in difficult wet conditions, along with limited visibility in the higher sections, resulting in Masuoka recording a time of 10 minutes, 21.866 seconds, with Tracy following closely behind at 10 minutes, 23.649 seconds. They placed second and third respectively in the Electric category, which was won by hill legend Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima with a time of 9:46.530.
