Track-optimised McLaren 12C GT Sprint introduced

There’s a new high(er)-performance variant of the MP4-12C, christened the McLaren 12C GT Sprint. Developed by McLaren GT, it fits in between the standard 12C road car and the all-out racing 12C GT3 and 12C GT Can-Am Edition models. The new model will be a part of McLaren’s extensive lineup at the Goodwood show this weekend.

Enhanced handling through optimised aerodynamics and track focus is the promise, and the 12C GT Sprint features updated developments of the ProActive Chassis Control (PCC), Brake Steer and the McLaren Airbrake systems. It’s honed to deliver a more track-focused GT racing experience whilst retaining the balance and precise characteristics of the road car.

The same 625 PS 3.8 litre twin-turbo V8 engine found in the standard car is in use here, albeit with a unique oil and cooling systems. There’s a central front radiator as per the 12C GT3 race car too. The GT Sprint retains the 12C’s seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox.

On the outside it gets aerodynamic and cooling upgrades, including a new front bumper and a GT3-inspired bonnet. Ride height is reduced by 40 mm, with a retuned suspension system for a more circuit-orientated setup. The brakes are carbon ceramic items, hiding behind centre-locking 19-inch OZ wheels shod with Pirelli slicks.

It’s not quite a full on racing car, so there’s a lightweight air conditioning system through the all-carbonfibre dashboard. A racing seat with six-point harness provides support, while an FIA-approved rollcage and an integrated fire extinguisher are in place for safety purposes.

The McLaren 12C GT Sprint is finished in heritage McLaren Orange as standard, and deliveries start by the end of this year with a starting price of under £200,000 before taxes. Don’t expect to be able to buy one through McLaren Kuala Lumpur, though.
