GALLERY: Skoda Octavia RS Sedan and Combi

Skoda Octavia RS-11

The new Skoda Octavia RS (vRS in the UK) has made its public debut at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed, which incorporates a Moving Motor Show. The hot Octavia comes in two bodystyles – Sedan and Combi (wagon) – and two turbocharged 2.0 litre engine options, one petrol, one diesel.

The petrol gets 220 hp and 350 Nm, while the diesel trades some horses for more torque at 184 hp and 380 Nm. The TSI breaks the 100 km/h mark in 6.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 248 km/h, 0.4 seconds and 6 km/h faster than the car it replaces. The TDI model registers 8.1 seconds and 232 km/h. Both models get a choice of six-speed manual or DSG transmissions.

The C-segment Octavia is a MQB platform sister to the Mk7 Golf, so it’s no surprise that the engines are shared with the latest Golf GTI and Golf GTD models. The donor cars’ XDS electronic differential lock and progressive steering are also featured here. The RS has a 12 mm (13 mm for the Combi) lower ride height compared to a standard Octavia, with sport suspension fitted as standard.

On the outside the Octavia RS gets a black front grille carrying a prominent RS badge, plus honeycomb air intakes, aggressively chiselled bumpers and darkened bi-xenon headlamps with integrated LED DRLs. Round the back it gets unique spoilers, LED lamps and a deep diffuser with two large trapezoidal-shaped chrome exhaust tips.

Inside you’ll find black sports seats and a sporty three-spoke leather steering wheel with plenty of RS badges everywhere. Unique RS instrument panel with colour display is also standard, together with stainless steel pedals and sill plates. Panoramic sunroof, eight-inch touchscreen with proximity sensor and premium Canton sound system are all optional extras.

Space wise, the new Octavia has a 102 mm longer wheelbase and a class leading 590 litre boot, 610 in the Combi. Performance and practicality clearly blend well in the new Octavia RS, and we’re liking the new clean cut, sharp lines, too. Not many know of it, but the previous gen Octavia vRS sedan was sold in Malaysia, so perhaps Berjaya will bring in a few units of this.

This car, as well as Passat, are both, while being squarish, more beautiful than Altis and Camry Malaysia. Toyota, please improve your designs. And of course safety features. You are the market leader, man.

Way too boxy. Like design from 90’s. VW has better curve and line.

Those who wish for a booted gti, its either the VRS or the GLi. VRS looks more brute.

When can we expect this model here in Malaysia?
Any significant discount on the current model?
