Honda to build Acura models in Guangzhou by 2016

Acura Concept SUV-X

Honda is planning to produce Acura cars in Guangzhou, China with its local partner beginning 2016, Reuters has reported. The move is an attempt to tap into the growing demand for luxury vehicles in the world’s biggest car market.

Honda and Guangzhou Automobile Group have signed a tentative agreement to build Acura models in China, according to Automotive News China. The 50-50 joint venture between the two is called Guangqi Honda. The Japanese carmaker also builds cars in Wuhan in partnership with Dongfeng Motor Corp.

Production capacity details are not known at this juncture, but a Honda spokeswoman has told Reuters that a likely model to be built is the road-going version of the Shanghai-debuting Acura Concept SUV-X (pictured).

Demand for premium cars in the People’s Republic is expected to hit 2.7 million cars a year by 2020, overtaking the US as the world’s biggest premium car market, Reuters adds. Audi, Mercedes and BMW all produce cars in China, with GM’s Cadillac having recently joined the party and Nissan building a factory in Dalian to build Infiniti models.
