VIDEO: Allan McNish drives the Audi SQ5 TDI on track

Here’s a new video of the Audi SQ5 TDI – the brand’s first diesel-powered high performance S model – as driven by Audi Sport’s three-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Allan McNish. The Scottish driver is quick to point out the connection between his own Audi R18 e-tron quattro race car to the super-SUV, as both are equipped high torque turbodiesel engines matched to quattro drivetrains.

A quick refresher: the Audi SQ5 TDI tops the Q5 SUV range, alongside the petrol powered SQ5 TFSI that is available in certain markets. Both have 3.0 litre V6 engines – the diesel with two turbochargers and the petrol variant helped on by a twin-rotor supercharger. The TDI gets 313 hp and 650 Nm of torque, while the TFSI counters back with 354 hp and 470 Nm.

The diesel in the video above is the quicker of the two SQ5s, with a 5.1 second 0-100 km/h time. That’s just 0.2 second less than the SQ5 TFSI, but with the same 250 km/h top speed and significantly better fuel economy (7.2 versus 8.5 litres per 100 km), the SQ5 TDI is technically the superior option. Over to you – which route would you choose, if given a choice: diesel or petrol?

  • this SQ5 can beat most Porsche Cayenne sprinting from 0-100km/h
the existing Q5 TFSi with 222hp/350Nm(7.1 secomds 0-100kmh) are good and easy enough to live with…
