SEAT Leon ST combines practicality with Spanish flair

SEAT has added an estate variant to its Leon range for the first time. The SEAT Leon ST now joins the base five-door hatchback and three-door Leon SC, echoing the three bodystyles offered on the Volkswagen Golf Mk7, with which the Leon shares its underpinnings.

The ST (Sports Tourer) retains the youthful design of the standard five-door model, but gains more practicality by having a 270 mm-longer rear overhang. Boot capacity is now 587 litres, which expands to 1,470 litres with the rear seats folded flat. It weighs just 45 kg heavier than the base car, making it the lightest estate in its class.

The equivalent Golf Variant boasts significantly more space at 605/1,620 litres but that comes at the expense of a more upright profile. The Leon ST looks far more dynamic in comparison, but the Volkswagen is still the one for you if you want the most practical family estate around.

Engine options consist of TDI and TSI motors, with displacements ranging from 1.2 to 2.0 litre with 105 to 184 PS. SEAT also introduced a slew of Golf-sourced options to the Leon range, including Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC) and Progressive Steering.

It brings a tear to my eye when I see how seat and skoda has progressed under Volkswagen. Why didn’t our government work something out with Volkswagen instead of selling it to company lik drb hicom!? I will tell you why, cronyism!! We are now paying high taxes to help a private company.

Sorry for my long rant, had to get it off my chest. Nice car btw. If only…..

With all the news about how nice the new Seats are, and how close they were with VW, will they ever reach our shores?
