Ford and Toyota hybrid collaboration called off

Sometimes it works, sometimes not. News has emerged that the planned collaboration between Ford and Toyota to jointly develop an advanced hybrid system for pick-ups and SUVs has been scrapped. In August 2011, both automakers signed a memorandum of understanding to work together in developing the system, which was planned to go into Toyota and Ford models.

The two companies were to come up with a new rear-wheel drive hybrid system and its component technology, as well as independently and separately integrate the system in their future vehicles.

The companies attempted to finalise an agreement last year, but as the Nikkei reports, were unable to reach a consensus on design techniques for base parts as well as production allocations. Failing to reach an accord this year, both parties have decided to call the project off. Both will now focus on continuing the development of proprietary hybrid technology.

The Blue Oval already has models on sale utilising an in-house-developed hybrid system, and says it will have a light-truck system ready by 2020. The two automakers will however continue to discuss a partnership to develop next-generation telematics, which was another area of cooperation announced in August 2011.

The companies were reported back then to have agreed to work together in developing each company’s telematics standards, whilst still continuing to develop their respective in-vehicle products and features – Ford has SYNC and MyFordTouch while Toyota has G-BOOK and G-Link in that mix.

  • The Japs are selfish automakers, they will not share with the Americans. After World War 2, they have rely a lot on US while they also did a lot of R&D in their scientific innovation quietly.

May I disagree, Toyota shared their production system after the WW2 in the 1980s after America had noticed about the “Machine that changed the world”. Yes Toyota want to be ahead, but for overall stakeholder’s benefit they share TPS so that it will benefit the society with cheaper and better cars.
