SPIED: Smart ForTwo and Renault Twingo mules

Smart-ForTwo-Mule-006

The two Toyota iQ-like cars you see above look like the same car, but are actually twins that will be produced under two different brands. What you’re looking at is actually the next generation Smart ForTwo, which is the car on the left, alongside its mechanical twin, the Renault Twingo, on the right.

The Twingo mule’s Renault origins is made easy to guess – the diamond-shaped spacing on the front grille for the Renault badge gives it away. The next generation Smart ForTwo is supposed to take design cues from the Smart Forvision, ForStars and ForUs concepts, while the next generation Twingo was previewed earlier this year as the Renault Twin’Z concept.

Other than these small two door cars, word is that the ForFour and five-door version of the Twingo will also be cars based on the same platform as the ForTwo and three-door Twingo. This is quite a change from what the original next generation Smart ForFour was supposed to be. When Renault-Nissan and smart first announced a partnership, sketches that were released of a next generation Smart ForFour looked like a Nissan March with smart design cues slapped on.

Europeans put a lot of emphasis on safety, much more so than ASEANs. Also Mercedes and Renault are known to put quite some effort into safety.

That… thing looks a lot like a shortened Twingo mixed with a smart fortwo. Not a nice mixture, and nowhere near as nice as the Twin Run concept that was supposed to preview to new Twingo. Also, does this mean the Twingo will also come as a 2 seater?

Dude, the weird twingo panels are merely a dress for both the fortwo and the new renault. They are not finalised designs of the car – only to cover whats really underneath. Just like what we saw with the chopped/slanted exora, which then became a Preve.

The smart forfour was quite popular here, strangely. Maybe MBM should’ve made a version of it at pekan plant, similar to 206 bestari

    • The smart forfour was a Mitsubishi Colt dressed as a Smart. It was build at the Mitsubishi/Volvo plant in the Netherlands. As maintenance and spare parts are (possibly?) cheap, it’s a not too bad choice in Malaysia.

Ive always been a fan of the fortwo, even more than the IQ. Seeing how nippy the car is on the streets of Berlin, it makes me wonder why it is not popular here in Msia. I think it has to do with the pricing and peoples perception.

Almost half Malaysian drivers, would like to drive in cars that could be easily customised – you know, big rims, spoilers, decals.. The smart is made for those who has limited space to park and drive (not a problem in malaysia). Not a super sonic (or super loud and slow) car. Plus if you drive this minature in KL, you will either get weird stares or get laughed at..

Those who did purchase the fortwo back in 2005/06 were people who need a weekend car, or a third car for wives to go pasar with european flair. Not what majority of malaysians would spend their money on – theres Vivas and Kancils around for that.

Its a total opposite of why it is popular in Europe – because it is cheaper and practical for those who has limited space. Not an ‘accessory’ like in Malaysia.

Look for used fortwos now, resale value is so high that the car only depreciates RM10-30K in 8 years, with millage as high as 100K. Not for everyone. But i sure would like one in my porch.
