Even without the Maybach brand, Mercedes-Benz is still looking for a slice of the ultra-luxury car market. The S-Class Extended Wheelbase we’ve seen before is known internally as the ‘Super S-Class’ according to Daimler AG CEO Dieter Zetsche, and will be targeted squarely at the Rolls-Royce Ghost and Bentley Flying Spur.
Speaking to Automotive News USA, Zetsche said that the new model will be priced to compete against the two German-owned ultra-luxury brands, but not at the same top level playing field that the Maybach 57 and 62 contested. As such, the flagship RR Phantom and Bentley Mulsanne models will go without competition from the Stuttgart company.
To both differentiate it from standard S-Class models and justify its significantly higher price, the ‘Super S-Class’ will offer “technology and interior appointments that top those of the S-Class sedan” when it goes on sale in 2015. It’ll have to be rather special, then, to outclass the “First Class Rear” seating option already available on the base car.
The Rolls-Royce Ghost and Bentley Flying Spur are derivations of the (comparatively) less exotic BMW 7 Series and Volkswagen Phaeton respectively, so a ‘Super S-Class’ should fit the market with relative ease. Even as it is, it’s not uncommon for a Mercedes to punch above its perceived weight, as the CL-Class in its top AMG guise is already accepted as a class alternative to the Bentley Continental GT.
Looking to sell your car? Sell it with Carro.
So, there will be real gold ‘3-star’ ornaments in front and rear?
What about the width?
Most people will only buy the ordinary version, which is good enough for us.
Merc still a merc.
Would it be a bad move from merc to kick roll royce butt with a si beh s class?
Being rolls royce is owned by bmw and merc is same rank with bmw. Most buyer will not consider merc when they’re aiming for the rr ghost.
if u are driven in Mec, and ur friend in RR.. ppl will think your friend are better than you..
To establish a status as high as a RR, MB really needs to sell, not sponsor ya, their superMercedes to Michael Jackson, Bill Gates, Sultan Arabia, The Queen etc and make a lot of publicities using these famous people, and most importantly, the superMercedes must be very outstanding and easily recognised(within 1 second) compared to the ordinary version.
And they must establish, for the first 15 years at least, a yardstick to whom they will only sell these superMercedes, meaning that no ordinary richmen can buy these superMercedes even if you have the money.
If you drive a Lexus LS, ppl will think you are better than RR.
pls change the rims…look vy ordinary.
the maybach was famous for being an oversized s-class…what mercedes needs to make is a new mercedes 600, and get dictators to be driven in it
