Toyota Vios 2013 promo video for the Indonesian market reveals tech-laden touch-screen system

Here’s a promotional video from Indonesia for the new 2013 Toyota Vios, highlighting features including its “catamaran shape roof,” remote boot release and new interior design.

What caught our eye is a rather premium-looking touch-screen in place of the standard radio unit – something we don’t believe we saw in the Thai-spec cars. It features a DVD player, internet browser, finger gesture recognition, drag-and-drop icons, M-Toyota app, wireless auto answer, voice command and Bluetooth connectivity. No mention of navigation, though.

A quick check on Toyota Indonesia’s website reveals this system to be offered only on the G-grade cars. Indonesia gets E M/T, E A/T, G M/T and G A/T variants, priced between Rp 242.5 and 272.5 million (RM76,360-85,800).

Closer to home, the 2013 Toyota Vios has popped up on our sister classifieds site oto.my, in regular and TRD Sportivo forms. An October launch has been suggested for Malaysia. Full information and Thai pricing and specs here, and a live gallery from the Bangkok show here.

If they do, expect other car makers to remove safety features. Soon some cars will come without seatbelt in Malaysia, cause apparently a lack of safety features boosts sales in Malaysia. Toyota with good safety features: Poor sales. Toyota with no safety features: Great sales.

don’t worry guys, this feature will not see the light in Malaysia Toyota Vios launch. You will get a standard radio unit only, at most.

The placement and type of display for the aircon looks like it will be quite hard to read when driving the car…

Overall quite an improvement over the outgoing car though.

Yay, it has 2 airbags and… gasp, ABS! I think someone should have told Toyota this is not 1993. In 1993, 2 airbags and ABS were worth mentioning. In 2013 6 airbags, ABS and ESP should be considered standard. Anything ON TOP of that is worth mentioning.

      • Isn’t it sad that Toyota being market leader in sales only and not leading the way in offering more safety equipments to the car-buying masses especially the lower middle spectrum this Vios resides in.

All I can say is in the US a base spec Camry comes with 10 airbags. The Yaris/Vios should probably have 6 there. Of course ESP in all cars. The safety features exist, Toyota has them. There is no development cost involved, cause, well, these cars come with these features elsewhere.

Now it is up to consumers or the government to make sure the cars get these. Vote with your pocket. Hold on to your current car if you want to buy the new Vios, or buy a competitor. And let Toyota know why you picked a competitor or just don’t change cars. Tell them it is 2013 and you expect a European/US/Japanese level of safety equipment, like some of the competitors in the same price bracket offer. It worked with ESP/VSC in the Camry (poor sales and complaints led to Toyota upgrading it again). It would also work with the Vios.

  • I’m ok with Vios but to pay much dearer than Americans paid their Camry 2.5 for almost RM100k B-segment is beyond me.

Having said that if P2 can rebadged this Vios and sell around RM65k-70k with ESP is acceptable.

Funny, the ” Vios” on the front plate is not straight in the first few scenes. Also, Stability? No ESC nothing. Luckily they did not slip in the word “sporty”.

Ain’t nobody got time to appreciate that “catamaran” roof in a vios. Might as well add in more safety than that. Seems pretty fishy in the marketing department.

I like how the internet browser section says “for browsing before you drive”. They should’ve underlined/bold the before your drive part. Hehe. Anyways, it helps prevent distracted driving although the passengers wont be too happy with that.
