New Toyota Corolla Axio and Fielder Hybrid for Japan

Toyota_Corolla_Axio_Fielder_Hybrid_014

Japan now gets new hybrid versions of the Toyota Corolla Axio (sedan) and Fielder (estate). They become the first Corolla-badged models to offer a hybrid powertrain, as the Auris hatchback and Estate have now dropped the Corolla nameplate.

Both models share the same hybrid powertrain found in the Prius c – a 73 PS/111 Nm Atkinson-cycle 1.5 litre petrol engine backed up by a 61 PS/169 Nm electric motor. Combined system output is rated at 101 PS, and its claimed economy figure is 33.3 km per litre, compared to the Prius c’s 35.4 km/L (both figures measured under the JC08 test cycle).

It uses a Nickel-Metal Hydride battery pack placed under the rear seats. Toyota is late to the game with Lithium-Ion batteries – as of now, only the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, RAV4 EV and European-market Prius+ use the newer, more efficient technology. The latest Honda Civic Hybrid and CR-Z are already using Lithium-Ion batteries.

On the outside the Corolla Axio and Fielder Hybrid are differentiated from its standard siblings by a new front grille with “Synergy Blue” emblems and an exclusive Light Blue Metallic colour option. Inside, there’s a new 4.2-inch colour screen on the instrument cluster to show all the necessary hybrid displays.

The new hybrid Corolla Axio and Fielder models command a 20% premium over the standard petrol-powered variants, and are positioned between the Prius and Aqua (Prius c) in Toyota’s hybrid lineup. As it is, hybrids account for around 40% of Toyota’s domestic sales – a number that is bound to rise as the company starts to offer new petrol-electric variants of its standard models.

This won’t be the new Corolla that we will get (that’ll be the ASEAN/European 2014 Toyota Corolla), but a hybrid option for the Toyota staple sedan sure sounds good, doesn’t it?

  • Toyota is not late to the game as far as Lithium-ion battery is concerned. It is sticking to Nickel-metal hydride and is skipping Li-ion battery while waiting for the next gen of battery to power its hybrid models.

There is a report(news) on this issue. Please try not to include personal and unconfirmed info.

Don’t be a stupid Toyota lover. If what you say is true then they won’t even use lithium ion on those few models. It’s simply a case of Toyota maximizing profit and using the minimum tech that they can get away with.

The target market for cars designed as such is clearly stated ‘…for Japan’. Perhaps, that goes to show how different (when it comes to perception) Japanese domestic consumers are compared to international markets when it comes to design appreciation?

Those who bash blindly about the car design surely never visited Japan. In this country, ‘ugly’ looking cars are as many as the good looking ones. And not only Toyota, every carmaker produce ugly cars. For instance; Nissan Cube, Honda Stepwgn, Mazda Biante, Mitsu Delica, Subaru Exiga and so on. But Japanese still buy these cars.

And think about this; Stepwgn and Serena always outsold Estima in the sales chart. Cheers!

I won’t really say those car are ugly, but unique. Japanese has very different taste in car compare to other country.

Guys, you shd see this car in person.. almost puked when I stand in front of it. Its mostly used as rental cars in Hokkaido when I was there 3 mths ago. Its a good thing I rented Toyota Mark X, cos next to my Mark X, there’s this super fugly Axio parked there.

The JDM Corolla is very small pple, about the size of Vios only. This latest model actually got a 2NZ-FE 1.3L VVTi from the Yaris as base motor!. The rental cars I saw was all 1.5L.. but its still the same 13 yr old 1NZ-FE from the Vios. CVT is standard. You CAN’T get rear disc brakes in the latest Axio… to expensive to produce :(

THe whole car looks very spartan, no tach! very cramped interior. This POS Axio is labeled as Gen11 Corolla over there. Compared to the real Gen11 export market Corollas (be it US or Euro model), its amazing how much crap Toyota is offering to its own pple. :(

You need to rent at least the Allion/Premio to get decent looks and space for your driving holiday in Hokkaido.

  • This car defines everything Toyota, design wise is neither good nor bad from my perspective, there’s nothing to write about. Writing an article about the design of this car is like writing an article about the inside of a ping-ping ball, it’s impossible. Thou few words can summarize it, Boring & bland being the leading few. Thou I have to say I’am liking that interior, it’s simple and functional.
All in all Is very Toyota, a simple functiona A-Bl machine

  • To be frank , The design looks very outdated and I won’t be surprise that people mistaken it as an old car.
