Vauxhall extends Northern Ireland team sponsorship

The Irish Football Association has announced a four-year sponsorship extension with Vauxhall that will see GM’s British brand maintain its position as Lead Partner to the Northern Ireland national teams. The sponsorship, which began in January 2011, will now run until July 2018, up to and including the FIFA World Cup Finals in Russia.

Within that period, Michael O’Neill’s side will embark on their UEFA European Championships 2016 qualification campaign with the Northern Ireland women’s and youth teams also competing in tournaments and matches throughout the world with the support of Vauxhall.

Vauxhall chairman and MD, Duncan Aldred, commented: “The passion that the Northern Ireland fans show at every game is inspirational and was a key factor in our decision to extend the sponsorship. This partnership is a clear and unequivocal sign of Vauxhall’s long standing commitment to Northern Irish football and will provide support from grassroots up to the elite level.”

Northern Ireland take on Russia in a rescheduled World Cup Qualifier on August 14 after their initial meeting in March was postponed due to bad weather. Michael O’Neill’s men then welcome Qualifying Group F leaders Portugal to Windsor Park on September 6.

Car brands sponsoring football teams is nothing new, with the most famous current example being Chevrolet’s relationship with Manchester United. A couple of seasons ago, the Proton logo was emblazoned on the yellow shirts of EPL team Norwich City FC, too.
