Lexus LF-NX previews upcoming compact SUV

lexus-lf-nx-concept-1

The concept car that Lexus will show at Frankfurt this month has turned out to be a preview of the upcoming Lexus NX crossover after all, and not the Lexus RC Coupe. In traditional Lexus concept car nomenclature, the Frankfurt debutant is called the Lexus LF-NX Crossover Concept, and it previews an upcoming compact SUV that’s smaller than the current RX.

The name Lexus NX was first trademarked in October 2012, and we saw a prototype of the Lexus NX undergoing tests earlier this year near the Nurburging. Lexus used a heavily camouflaged body of a Lexus CT200h to test the NX running gear. You could tell it was not just a disguised CT200h because of the loftier ride height of the prototype.

The Lexus LF-NX concept is powered by a new variation of the Lexus Hybrid Drive full hybrid system. That’s all the technical details we have at the moment – the main thing that this concept reveals is the exterior and interior styling direction of the upcoming crossover.

The styling is very aggressive, with a very bold spindle grille dominating the face and highly sculpted exterior panels. The headlamps continue the design precedent set by the new Lexus IS which separates the daytime running lights from the main headlamp units.

The full Frankfurt 2013 madness will be happening next week, so stay tuned.

I don’t know if this is pretty, ugly or over designed.

    • Not surprising coming from Toyota. As usual struggling with the design when others are already miles ahead. Do you notice that Toyota doesn’t have a common design language among their models? A simple concept of branding which they can’t grasp. But their strength is in production efficiency and cost savings.

Try to be futuristic but overly done.

Haiz… toyota still need some miles to learn.

It a little bit over designed especially the rear. If they managed watered it down a little bit, it’s definitely a looker!
“We want this to be a very influential car — one to make its rivals look boring,” says design project manager Nobuyuki Tomatsu
This is a very daring statement, but Lexus really did it when they say it.

I started to like the Predator Grille. This Predator will kill X3, Q5 and GLK at no time. May be Macan is the only one can survive like Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Lexus using the latest Stealth Fighter technology. It can’t be detected under the radar. It won’t be under consumers radar as well

Too sharp to be stealthy. in fact, it shows up super visible on radar cause of its sharp edges all over. haha

  • There is waaaay to much going on and the new GX proofed the spindle grill dosen’t work on big cars. If, they could make it smaller like how Audi does it with their Audi’s rectangle grill on the Q-7, by making it smaller with a secondary intake/diffuser under the main one, than it could work. IT could definitely be a stunning car, and onwe that can be very different from the pack in design, you definitely can’t mistake it for anything else. But for this, that grill ruin almost everything.

No one in Lexus is brave enough to sack the designers?… Since when to be difference & exciting that you have to resort to being ugly?… The new Lexus grille really doesnt work for a luxury marque and now this.. Surely make the eyes hurt now…. Too bad because I really like Lexus especially the previous LS460…

The predator nose clearly cannot be applied across the range, it’s OTT and undignified, downright scary even.

    • Agree, and that’s why I said Toyota doesn’t have a common design language across its models. In other words, there’s no branding in its design.

  • Concept cars can be forgiven for being extravagant and OTT. But this will need exterior revisions to make it at least pleasant on the eyes if it really got into production. The interior looks futuristic but I doubt it will go into production looking as it is.
