2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, LWB Suburban and its GMC Yukon, Yukon XL and Yukon Denali siblings unveiled

Eco warriors, look away now as these are General Motor’s new fleet of full-size SUVs for the American market. Still here? You’re looking at the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, long-wheelbase Suburban and its 2015 GMC Yukon, Yukon XL and Yukon Denali siblings.

Compared to their predecessors, GM claims that the new models have more efficient powertrains, improved aerodynamics and better overall refinement. All share the same body-on-frame underpinnings sourced from their latest pickup counterparts, the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra.

Under the hoods lie a 5.3 litre V8 EcoTec3 engine with direct injection, cylinder deactivation and continuously variable valve timing, offering 355 hp and 519 Nm of torque. The flagship GMC Yukon Denali gets a more powerful 6.2 litre V8 with 420 hp and 623 Nm, and both are mated to a standard Hydra-Matic six-speed automatic gearbox.

Official fuel consumption ratings have yet to be announced, but since they weight close to two and a half tonnes each, don’t expect them to be kind on the oily stuff. Or the environment. Still, much improved aerodynamics and a more efficient electric power steering guarantee that they’ll at least better the outgoing models’ 6.3 to 7.2 km per litre ratings.

The Chevrolet pair gets its own looks, with more horizontal elements compared to the GMC’s more vertical design. The Suburban has a 355 mm-longer wheelbase compared to Tahoe, and is 500 mm longer overall. Both have seven seats, with the Suburban offering more legroom for the third-row passengers and almost twice the cargo room behind.

It’s the same story with the more premium GMCs; the XL obviously the larger of the two. The Yukon Denali is essentially range’s top trim level, and gets unique design cues on the outside (more chrome everywhere) and a more luxurious cabin (standard noise-cancellation tech and magnetic ride control).

If back seats are folded, the area created is enough for 3 adults to sleep comfortably.

The GMC’s front managed to look like the piggy in Angry Birds, in this case the giant pig king. The Chevy looks much better and purposeful.

5.3 and 6.2 litres?? Roadtax will be a killer here… Only super-rich will afford them… But then who wants them? Only “American” diehards, as most rich Malaysian prefer BMW X5/X6, Toyota Land Cruiser LX570 or Porsche Cayenne SUV’s.. Brand power perhaps…

Remember all the soft loans Malaysia got from the Japanese Government from the 80’s to the 90’s? They don’t come as soft as we think.

We have to sell our best quality crude oil to the Japs at rock bottom prices and import the low quality high sulphur crude from the Mid East for domestic consumption

Yes, these are big and fuel guzzlers but most people here will not understand the allure of these monsters.

I had a go with a buddy’s Tahoe. It drives like shit, has a rubbish interior, drinks fuel like no tomorrow BUT these are not off road posers, but full fledged workhorses based on the full sized heavy duty silverado pickup. The key attribute here is towing capability. If you have a horse box, a boat or an RV/camper and you need to ferry 6-9 ppl in relative comfort at the same time, you won’t find much better choices elsewhere.

The most impressive thing is the interior fitment. GM cars have really really rubbish interior…this interior looks miles better than even its Escalade interior.

Middle Eastern’s love this type of car….. Look how ubiquitous the Toyota Land Cruiser, Mitsubishi Pajero and Ford Explorer there.. Fuel price is just few cents to a dollar per gallon, so fuel economy is not a problem there…

Rode in a Suburban before in Saudi and it is the perfect Malaysian family balik kampung car (sans bulky interior and big engine). No MPV can lug 8 people and still have room for luggage for 8 people.

The tax and insurance alone kill u let alone the guzzle of fuel and modern American are turning to much lower capacity Korean and Japanese cars below 3000cc which perform almost as same as the V8

Minus the soundtrack and throbbing only a V8 can muster… Matters only to muscle car fans…
