Mitsubishi Triton VGT GS and GL: from under RM100k

Mitsubishi_Triton_VGT GS_1

The Mitsubishi Triton range is both diverse and a little bit confusing. It starts with the (commercial use only) Triton Heavy Duty, and goes on through the Triton Single Cab, Triton LITE Turbo, standard Triton 2.5, to the range-topping Triton VGT, each with varying levels of specifications. Now, the VGT model is split into two variants: the VGT GS and VGT GL.

So what’s new here, then? For starters, the Mitsubishi Triton VGT GS bundles in most of the extras that were offered in the limited edition Triton VGT Euro from last year, such as the powered sunroof, powered sliding rear vent window (the glass panel behind the rear seats) and a short cargo bed.

The shorter bed measures 1,325 mm, significantly shorter than the standard truck‘s 1,505 mm. It improves manoeuvrability and parking in tight spaces, and it looks better too, no? The regular Triton’s long rear overhang has always appeared slightly awkward. Plus, as the VGT GS is primed as the Triton’s premium variant and aimed at city dwellers, its absolute load carrying capacity counts for little here.

More goodies include a black leather upholstery with red highlights and a premium security tint film by Llumar. The rest of the pickup is identical to the Triton VGT it replaces – 17-inch wheels, front bumper extender, dual airbags, automatic climate control, multi info RV meter and a Bluetooth and iPod compatible Kenwood head unit are all standard.

Mitsubishi_Triton_VGT GS_2

The Mitsubishi Triton VGT GS, now the range-topping variant, is priced at RM106,835 on-the-road without insurance and is available in Red Solid, White Solid and Black Mica. A three-year/100,000 km warranty and Mitsubishi’s two-year free maintenance package are included too.

Also new is the Triton VGT GL, priced at RM99,617. This one loses out on the GS’ new add-ons, but is equipped with an extended cargo bed, 16-inch wheels, plate-type side steps and dual airbags. The side decals, protector mouldings and bumper extender are all taken out too, but none of them are essential items. A Cool Silver colour option replaces the GS-exclusive Red Solid.

Common to both models is the familiar VGT-equipped 2.5 litre turbodiesel engine, with peak power of 178 PS and 350 Nm of torque, the latter maintained from 1,800 to 3,500 rpm. Also standard is a five-speed automatic transmission with Sports mode, along with Mitsubishi’s Easy Select 4WD system, Hybrid Limited Slip Differential (LSD), ABS and EBD.

Danny has driven the Mitsubishi Triton VGT on- and off-road in Kuching when it was launched last year. Read his full review here.

Mitsubishi’s interior fitting is not good.
You can even see it in the interior shot. The glove box is misaligned, and that gap between the door weatherstrip and lower cover.

Where is the 5-speed manual transmission? With manual transmission variant of Triton VGT, I can get full 400Nm of torque instead of 350Nm.

Yeah, that’s what we city guys want, a short bed as long as can fit in 2 bicycles, and easier parking

  • those extra like sun roof and auto rear window serve no purpose at all, and you have to pay about RM13,000 more to have the GS for these things you don’t need. What a bad design!!
The previous(last year) Euro-Spec which is the same model already showing problems with the sun roof and the rear window….squeaking and leaking….

  • why can’t they(MMA) do a simple VGT with a short car base???

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 7 Thumb down 0
  • after sales service is bad as they (MMA) does not deal direct with the consumers unlike toyota, nissan or ford….big point!!! if you have an issue with your vehicle you can get satisfactory result as the dealers can just brush you aside…

hi there jack, i own a triton 2013 and am very happy. Okay, the negative points ( my personal opinion – the positive points i let others say lah ) of other twin cabins – hilux is too bumpy though more lasak, navara is gas sucker, new ranger expensive spare parts, new dmax loud engine.Seriously, triton’s only real challenge to me is hilux. you may not agree, just an opinion.

        • It does not matter what you own; the whole idea here to make reviews whether they are bad or good, or what car they are…get it..! If you dont like bad feedback dont bother to make any remarks!! That’s how things improve by making comments!! Dont you sound like a chauvinist!!

You want buy Triton VGT or not its ur problem!!! im as Triton VGT Owner, Im glad i buy Triton in first place…Triton VGT power is diferent then older Triton…VGT has A big TurboCharger upgrade then older version of Triton…Long bed or Short bed i prefer Long bed because its easy for u to find Sport Lid Cover for ur Long bed. Hilux same as u buy a big Box, Triton body shape is number 1. Ford ranger 4×4 changer using switch give u problem oneday and the power less more then Triton VGT.

  • Been using the VGT Euro since Oct’ 2012 and all i can say is that its a pretty damn good 4×4 in many ways. Power is good at stock far better than Hilux 2.5 VNT. On highways it out paces 3.0 VNT and Navarra. No issues off road either. After 1 year i done 55k covered all over the country off roads and highways all. No issues with SC either. My past rides were 2005-2008 Hilux and 2008-2012 Hilux. Triton VGT is a better. Enough said.

    • Triton kalau bab nak accelerate ok lah, aku pon dah ambik satu baru ni, tapi Jepun ni kedekut, warranty 3 tahun je, dalam takde la luas macam ford, bekas air botol mineral kecik je boleh masuk, pickup selalunya keta org buat kerja walaupon vgt gs sekalipon, tak patut langsung buat bekas air kecik haha.. vgt gs vs ford ranger wildtrak walau yg aku ambik ni model 2014 pon still tak boleh lawan dengan ford.. tapi apakan daya ford wildtrak stok dah tak masuk.
