SPYSHOTS: Gallardo-replacing Lamborghini Cabrera

Lamborghini_Cabrera_Spied_011

The venerable Lamborghini Gallardo may still have some bite left, but after a long sequence of numerous facelifts and special editions, including our very own MLE shown below, it’s getting a little long in the tooth. It’s about time, then, for a new model to replace the 10-year-old design, and our European spies have already spotted it running around the Nurburgring.

Strongly tipped to be called the Lamborghini Cabrera (named after the historic Spanish fighting bull, as was the Gallardo; unrelated to Ryan the musician or MLB’s Miguel), the new supercar will be closely related to the next-generation Audi R8. A shared platform and running gear has been all but confirmed.

Expect the 5.2 litre V10 engine to produce more power than its current peak of 570 PS, while the latest R8’s seven-speed S tronic transmission should be making an appearance in the latest Lambo, making it the first Santagatesi supercar to feature a dual-clutch ‘box.

More weight-saving carbon-fibre – using some of the tech showcased by the sub-tonne Sesto Elemento Concept – would mean that the Cabrera’s 0-100 km/h time should be closer to three rather than four seconds. Top speed? Anything above 320 km/h would be a good guess.

You can’t see much through the ironclad disguise put in place here, but the new Lambo’s dramatic teardrop shape is as clear as day. Some say it will take on a few (hopefully not too many) design cues from the wild Egoista Concept shown earlier this year. In any case, it won’t be a Lamborghini if it’s subtle, right?

Look out for a big premiere sometime next year, with perhaps another one or two more special versions of the Gallardo along the way. Collectors love run-out models, don’t they? Just ask Porsche.

That is a surprisingly round car without sharp edges. Has Lamborghini upgraded their graphics cards, so they can increase the polygon count of their cars?

It’s heavily masked. If you see the picture of the back end of the car closely, you can see the masking is pretty thick

Is it just me, but the name sounded like the Porsche’s own Carrera. Silent the B, though

Lambo should’ve replaced the Gallardo quite some time ago. Too many speecial editions already to extend its life span, while the competition has moved on with new models.
