Mercedes-Benz S-Class Convertible confirmed – report

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe

Mercedes-Benz product development boss Thomas Weber has confirmed to Automotive News a convertible based on the S-Class Coupe Concept from the recent Frankfurt show (pictured). The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Convertible should arrive in 2015, after the production S-Class Coupe goes on sale in 2014.

Being an S-Class by name, the convertible shouldn’t skimp on luxury and comfort – think Bentley Continental GTC rather than the SL-Class. It should seat four as well, so it wouldn’t clash with the sportier SL. Also, unlike the SL, the S-Class Convertible will have a fabric roof; although it could share the former’s twin-turbo V8 and V12 powerplants.

For an idea of how a Mercedes-Benz S-Class Convertible could shape up, look no further than the 2006 Concept Ocean Drive, which had four doors and Airscarf for all occupants. The neck-level heating for all four seats could make it to the production convertible, but a four-door is unlikely, at least for now.

The last S-Class convertible was the W111 cabriolet, which came in 220 SE, 250 SE, 280 SE and 280 SE 3.5 versions between 1961 and 1971.

Why do they keep coming up with these niche cars and not volume movers that everyone can afford…

Because there are still a number of people who like convertibles and sportscars despite having some age.

Oh good, hope it coming here, I’m retiring in 2 years from now, might as well reward myself with the car.It gonna be my last anyway…can use it to drive around showing off to my old friends or relatives (maybe score some youth underage chicks)
