Proton Perdana Replacement Model to be based on the Honda Accord, to replace gov’t Perdana fleet

Proton-Accord-rendering

Following an earlier announcement that the Proton Perdana Executive and Proton Inspira in the federal government’s official vehicle fleet were to be replaced by the Honda Accord, Malaysiakini now reports that the government has opted instead for the Proton Perdana Replacement Model (speculative rendering by Theophilus Chin shown), which will be based on the Honda Accord (likely the eighth-gen car).

UPDATE: The Honda Accord-based Proton Perdana Replacement Model (PRM) has been spotted on the road, see all the spyshots here.

The KiniTV clip below shows MITI deputy minister and Ledang MP Datuk Hamim Samuri revealing in Parliament that Proton has developed a replacement for its aging Perdana through its technical collaboration with Honda, and that the government would use the vehicle as its official car.

    • Got good reason why; because Proton can learn how to make their own in-house designed D-segment sedan in the near future. Proton started out this way with the Saga. They took 15 years to learn the ropes and make the (flawed) Waja. Then another 3 for the Gen-2 with CamPro.

Today, Proton can only make B and C segment homegrown (not rebadged) cars, plus a small MPV. They still don’t know how to make a D-segment (Camry/Accord size) car, the Perdana is a Mitsubishi Eterna under the hood.

I just wish the gov would leave Proton alone. This is bad news for Proton because 1] they will waste unnecessary resources catering to a tiny market segment when they should be focusing on their Saga and Prevé models and 2] continue that ugly image of Proton being a political tool.

Very disheartening. Oh well…. 4 more years. Then it will all change.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 227 Thumb down 294

Correction. They know how to made the D-segment cars, still the economic of scale cannot justify the R&D cost. I’m sure it will break even for at least 20 years. It’s not viable. That’s why DSZ previously just use Lancer for D-segment cars.

the ultimate failure of “Copy & Rebadge” is the Proton Juara.

Proton is using not using the platform only, it’s actually the total car itself. The only difference will be at compenant level of its productions parts, it will localised to Proton own selected vendors in stages. (Similar to Inspira from Mitsubishi base)

proton hired LG as consultant in which local people design, decide, develop its own part with LG’s advice. above all, proton solely can decide what specs can be included in the vehicle based on market feedback and trend. not like perodua. daihatsu is the one who decides what features to put into the vehicle regardless of malaysian needs.
proton did mention they rebadged inspira from lancer (90% similarity). how about myvi? have perodua mentioned in public they rebadge it? (50% similarity? nahhh, more than that).

so P1 did a rush job to market a perdana replacement just to secure the gov contract???

How is P1 going to be a better company if it’s so short sighted aiming only at quick fixes????

that’s the advantage of rebadging. to develop a new car from scratch would take years plus higher development cost. so, many manufacturers rebadge or did minor re-engineering for a small-volume cars. they will save alot of time and money by doing so.

First of all. Malaysia automotive is king of rebadging. Look at P1 n P2. Even P1 did put some effort to build its own car but never impressed rakyat especially quality. Doesn’t P1 feel shame, but not! They feel proud! Even Exora, Saga, Preve, Neo, Suprima is local production capability without copy cat, quality wise is still doubt. Not for those who lucky to own zero defect but for those who own it with defect issue. Some more, our tax is being fund into G n they use it for P1? Im not sure my statement is true but P1 own by very famous founder of high tax car, Dr.M. If P1 never being set up, but its too late to say something anymore. P1 is still taking care by G, Dr.M support its own boleh land car owning each of them n park at his own unknown property. Did he ever drive it? Mayb just a glance will consider driven.

  • Honda Malaysia just commited hara-kiri alienating so many loyal customers and making the brand cip, seems like no brand is safe from Potong’s rebadging, who’s next, Camry or even Jaquar Harimau??

Rebadging car is not new. Other car manufacturer do that. Perodua is the best example.
