Volkswagen Motorsports has wrapped up the 2013 WRC Manufacturers’ Championship with a commanding one-two finish in the Rally of Spain. Leading the team is no other than newly-crowned Drivers’ Champion Sebastien Ogier, who took his eight and the Polo R WRC’s ninth win in 12 rallies so far this season. Not bad for a debut year.

VW number two driver Jari-Matti Latvala had been leading the event heading into the final day, but a late charge by Ogier, compounded by a mechanical failure through the penultimate stage wilted his progress. He finished over 30 seconds behind his teammate, but well clear of everybody else. Citroen’s Mikko Hirvonen completed the podium.

Meanwhile, ex-F1 and rising rally star Robert Kubica ended ninth overall, winning the junior WRC 2 category by a massive four-minute gap. The class victory, his fifth in seven events, bagged him the WRC 2 Drivers’ Championship in his first full competitive year.

The Pole will now take part in the season-ending Rally of Great Britain next month, driving a works Citroen WRC car. His top-class debut will likely decide if he’s going to be driving in the top WRC category for the 2014 season. His comeback run keeps getting better and better.
