Tokyo 2013: Suzuki Hustler and Hustler Coupe debut

Suzuki Hustler TMS 12

Suzuki has a number of concepts on show in Tokyo, and one of them is the quaintly named Hustler. You’d imagine with that kind of moniker, the design study would be aimed at the kind of crowd who live in smoke-filled poolrooms, but the minicar crossover is actually targeted at those with an outdoorsy lifestyle.

Measuring in at 3,395 mm long, 1,475 mm wide and 1,665 mm tall, the boxy Hustler features exterior SUV styling cues, married to a roomy, comfortable interior. Large tyres and good ground clearance means the vehicle should handle light off-road needs very ably.

Keeping in line with things, the car comes replete with seatback tables to cater for those meal moments, and the rear seats fold down to offer an easy-to-clean, solid-surface luggage compartment floor.

Suzuki Hustler Coupe TMS 4

A 658 cc three-cylinder petrol mill with idling stop and an Ene-Charge regeneration system, mated to a CVT gearbox, powers the 790 kg Hustler. The same power and drivetrain combo also equips the Hustler’s sportier derivative, the Hustler Coupe.

The Hustler Coupe gets a sloped roofline treatment to give it its suffix. It shares the same length and width measurements as the normal Hustler, only being lower at 1,635 mm – both Hustler models sit on the same platform, which has a 2,425 mm-long wheelbase.

Suzuki says that the line flow is reminiscent of “a cool young person wearing a baseball cap with the peak rotated around to the back.” More like it, the use of the name here. Other design elements that differ it from the standard Hustler include bolder framed headlamps and rear lights, a spoiler and six-spoke black alloys with red accent lines.
