The new sixth generation Ford Mustang will be unveiled live tonight in Sydney, along with a few other major cities – Shanghai, Barcelona, Dearborn, LA and New York.
The new global Mustang is codenamed the S550 will go on sale in Q4 2014 as a ‘2015 model year’ car, a continuation of the legendary nameplate that first started in 1964. We call the new Mustang a global car because that’s exactly what it is – the new Mustang will be Ford’s attempt to bring its Americana icon out into the world market, in both left hand drive and right hand drive form. The convertible model will also continue to be available with this generation.
The logo of the stallion running west on the front grill will allow you to easily identify it as a Mustang, and it still remains some of its retro-futuristic looks, though it seems to learn slightly towards the futuristic side of things. The side profile has a B pillar that hides behind the door glass in order not to interrupt the silhouette.
The LED tail lamps still have a triple vertical bar type of design, and they still light up sequentially to indicate a turn signal, but this behaviour will be restricted to US market cars. The triple bar design is repeated in the headlamps are daytime running lights.
Ford originally wanted to develop the new Mustang on the existing fifth generation platform, but as development progressed things clearly wasn’t quite working out. Development targets weren’t being achieved, and the entire project was even said to have been rebooted once. It has the same wheelbase as the current model but is 38mm lower and 40mm wider.
The sixth generation sits on a new platform that for the first time features independent rear suspension for a regular Mustang, ending a 50 year tradition of live axles for the pony. New aluminium rear knuckles help reduce unsprung mass for improved ride and handling.
SVT Cobra ‘stangs did come with independent rear suspension in the late 90s to early 2000s. Its global aspirations haven’t shrunk the Mustang to fit onto the narrow roads of Europe – it’s still as big and muscular as ever.
At the front, a new perimeter subframe helps to stiffen the front structure while reducing mass, providing a strong foundation for more predictable wheel control that benefits handling, steering and ride. The new double ball-joint front MacPherson strut system also enables the use of large, powerful brakes.
Three engines are available. The baseline engine is a 3.7 litre V6 making about 300 horsepower. Next up is a 2.3 litre turbocharged direct injection Ecoboost four cylinder making 309 PS and 410 Nm of torque, which will be more than the normally aspirated V6.
The top of the line is a more traditional muscle car 5.0 litre V8 producing 426 PS and 529 Nm of torque. All engines put power to the rear wheels either through a 6-speed manual or 6-speed auto.
The interior sports the latest Ford MyTouch in car infotainment system. It retains a retro-looking steering wheel and a traditional double binnacle design for the instrument cluster. Other features will include a push start system, paddle shifters for the automatic, and BLIS blind spot monitoring. There is a Selectable Drive Mode feature which allows the driver to tap the toggle switches on the console to quickly adjust steering effort, engine response, and transmission and electronic stability control settings.
Only 10% of Mustang sales are expected to come from outside of the USA, so although it has global aspirations, most of its sales is expected to be America-centric.

‘true’ muscle car died long time ago, killed by an oil crisis in 1973. the last true model being ’71 455ci pontiac firebird trans am.
the muscle car of today is only a reflection of their former glory.While very much decent, they do not invoke the true feeling and image of the musclecar. Close, but not quite. That simply means point and shoot then slam the accelerator to the floor and hold on while the world comes to an end from the noise and tire smoke. That’s a muscle car, no handling, just brute force with smoke and noise. the Mustang is too comfortable practical to be a brute.
While I’d agree with you to a certain deg bro, I really won’t consider today’s pony cars as just a ‘reflection’ of their forefathers.
The muscles cars of 60s- early 70s were something special for that time period, but their engineering and overall drivablity is laughable by today’s standards.
Eg, despite offering 6-7.5L OHV V8 in many late model muscles from the big 3, none of them can accelerate as well as any sporty cars of today. Their tiny, narrow bias ply tires and utter lack of traction means you waste alot of time smoking the rear tires instead of moving forward
And then there’s handling and brakes… which unfortunately most muscle cars of that era simply can’t offer. When you have to pay extra for 2 tiny disc brakes in a 2 ton charger whose engine o/p is over 425hp, you know something is very wrong. And simple rear leaf springs just don’t cut it
Today’s muscle cars are fully in tune with what the industry standard dictates… meaning, you can have all the fun smoking the tires, but your 400hp pony car must meet the tighten emission standards any countries can throw at you. And you need to be as safe (if not safer) than that mid size sedan parked next to you. It means tons of airbags are required for the job.
And your muscle car is expected to handle as well as the best sports cars you can buy within the same price bracket if not beyond.
And the car should come with all the lux creature comfort and features you’d expect in your homely sedan. You shd be able to have a quiet, smooth ride to the supermarket in your muscle cars w/o beating the shit outta butt.
I do think that we’re living in the golden age of muscle cars today. Its not easy for engineers to offer affordable fun drive while meeting the tons of emission, safety, creature comfort requirements today customers came to expect.

Time changes things, but the true calling of muscle cars are still valid. As I posted many times ago, the heritage of the muscle car lives on. To drive one is a sense of occasion in itself. The immense presence, that V8 rumble, the power.
The market grew up. So will the cars. But there will never be anything to argue that these aren’t muscle cars in their own right. I owned a 97 Z28. Its impractically huge, not really that quick, horrible in anything other than dry tarmac, but damn it was fun driving it, the twin flowmasters would make the hair on your back stand (and set off every other car’s alarm system). Is it any less than a 67 Camaro? It would be better I reckon.
It was a numbers game back then. Big number = bragging rights. Many never lived up to what their numbers would suggest. My 20 yr old 4 cyc Turbo AWD would out accelerate these old birds (including the 97 Z28)…

Seriously, a new 274hp Hyundai Sonata/Kia Optima 2L GDI Turbo can outdrag a 1969-1970 Mustang Boss 302 or even the 1969 GT500!
And that applies to the 3.5L V6 Nissan Teana that you can buy from your local Nissan dealer in Bolehland too..
and both sedans, despite their non-sporty, comfort based suspension, chassis etc.. can easily out handle the factory stock Mustang Boss 302, which was already a special factory prepped, track ready model.
But when it comes to style, sound and everything that comes with it, the good old muscle cars still rules! :) The Hyundai Sonata Turbo simply sounds too quiet and refined to be exciting LOL
I hereby blame Autoweek, for taking a pic of the Mustang’s worse angle and giving me a bad impression on the design of the new Mustang…..it looks Awesome!! My initial fear of it being globalize and loosing its Americana image is being put to rest, it still looks mascular thats for sure and there is something about the headlights and rear that has a touch of Italian to it. The interior looks retro old school. Overall, a truly handsome car , and still a true pony car, well done Ford….
and there is still a 5.0 NA V8 in front, a manual transmission in the middle and a drive wheels at the rear…..Thats chapter 1, page 1 of the textbook Murica’pony car.

The issue here is that the north american tail lamps do not have the amber turn signal.
I’m glad that the retro looks are still intact… Retro looks are what makes a Stang, well, a Stang indeed… And finally independent rear suspension and turbocharged engine makes it into the Stang, still it retains the good old V8…

Conversion rate, import/excise/sales… we’re looking at 180k minimum here. What more, months ago it is said the ecoboost model will not be the base model, so expect higher cost :/

Price the EcoBoost model at sub-RM250K is appropriate if the parts (especially engine) are localized for Asean. Surely will give UMW Toyota a hell of a scare. But then since it rolled out in the US of A, do expect hefty duties & taxes despite its smaller engine displacement.
