New Proton Perdana based on eighth-gen Honda Accord handed over – PM gets a stretched version!

2014-Proton-Perdana-Accord-0013

Proton handed over the first batch of its new Proton Perdana cars over to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak today at a ceremony in Putrajaya. The badge on the rear says Perdana and not some other name, making this the second Proton nameplate to get a ‘second generation’ after the Saga.

Just as our previous spyshots of mildly disguised previous-generation Accords being tested indicated, the new Proton Perdana is based on the previous-generation Honda Accord. And like the Accord, the new Proton Perdana is available with either a 2.0 litre and 2.4 litre engine, both sourced from Honda.

2014-Proton-Perdana-Accord-0006

Changes on the front include a new Proton grille and a completely new bumper design. The car also gets a new alloy wheel design. On the rear, we see that the tail lamp elements on the boot lid have been removed, but the chrome that used to run along it at the bottom remains there. This chrome is extended around the sides and bottom of the number plate area.

The big boss man himself gets a stretched version, with the government’s crest in the extended section between the front and rear windows. We wonder what the new wheelbase measurement is.

2014-Proton-Perdana-Accord-0010

The Honda Accord already has a huge interior with lots of rear legroom – this will certainly allow the PM to completely stretch out his legs and relax. The window line is different for the long-wheelbase Perdana – it has a rather Buick-like dip at the rear to allow for a larger rear window.

Previous reports have indicated that this will be the first phase of the Perdana replacement model project, which will consist of 3,000 units for government use. The initial delivery is 200 units, with the remaining to be delivered on a staggered basis. The car obviously has lots of metal that indicates it is an Accord, but it will be developed further for a general market introduction in two years time.

2014-Proton-Perdana-Accord-0003

The mass market car will continue to use this shared platform, but will have a completely new exterior and interior, according to Proton executive chairman Tan Sri Mohd Khamil Jamil. As for this short term solution, it was developed in eight months.

“Even with such short request time, we were up for the challenge – and through sheer dedication and hard work, we are here today to present the completed Perdana. We are truly grateful to the Prime Minister and the Malaysian Government for keeping their faith in Proton, and for giving us the opportunity to once again be the provider of the official government vehicle. I represent all Warga Proton when I say that this moment serves as inspiration and motivation for us to work even harder than ever, to continue leading the national automotive industry,” added Tan Sri Mohd Khamil.

For 30 years we rakyat suffer paying high car prices. All because of Proton. Actually car prices the past 30 years have not gone up that much despite inflation. You can see this from the US prices. A Honda Accord 2.4 and Toyota Camry 2.5 2014 model is USD$22,000. Yes, top of the range cars are only about RM60,000. So, this proves, car prices have not really gone up much the past 30 years. We still can be buying a Toyota Corolla or Nissan Sunny brand new for maybe about RM40,000, up from RM20,000 20 years ago.

So, for 30 years, we have been paying super high prices to protect Proton. Proton also gets hundreds of million ringgit in grant every few years from our Government. This is our hard earned tax payers money.

So with all the protectionism and all the suffering every single 30 million Malaysians been paying overpriced cars because Proton needs protection, all they can come up is rebadge?

Tak malu ke Proton? Disgusting. 30 million people suffer for the past 30 years and ALL Proton can do is rebadge an outdated Honda? What are your engineers and designers doing?

We Malaysians have the right to know. Because for 30 years we have been paying overpriced cars and our tax payers money been given to Proton in the form of grants.

            Disgusting.

Korean cars started same time as Proton. See where is Proton and where is Hyundai now? Worldwide sales of ALL cars in the world, Hyundai is ranked as No 5 int he entire world.

Proton has ZERO International name. Both Hyundai and Proton started same time. See the difference.

Proton got ZERO marketshare in global market. Local market also, because rakyat kena paksa, that is why got sales. If MITI does not control the prices of other cars so that it does not undercut Proton, Proton would have gone bust 20 years ago.

Satu lagi, hyundai x main rebadge2 ni. Proton je. Yg beli rebadge proton ni, rakyat Msia je. Kau ingat org luar negara nak beli “Proton Accord” ni? Buat pe, yang ori ade, latest lagi tu.

Sampai bila nk camni? Ownership cost utk keta makin tggi, nk support Proton/Perodua, tp Proton/Perodua x maju2. Ni ke matlamat Proton/Perodua ditubuhkan? Rebadge kete lama, pastu jual kat rakyat Msia. Tu je? Hampeh…

            Correction Bro…

Hyundai Motor Company was established in 1967 (not 1960). The company’s first model (Cortina) was released in cooperation with Ford Motors in 1968. In 1975, the Pony, the first Korean car, was released, with styling by ItalDesign and powertrain technology by Mitsubishi.. (7 years later only.. no more Rebadging)

The official founding of Proton was in 1983. The Proton Saga was launched in 1985. It was based on the second generation 1983 Mitsubishi Lancer Fiore. Iswara, Wira, Putra, Satria Perdana all rebadge. (even Tiara)
Then in 2000 the first Malaysian car Waja was launched. (15 years after the first Saga)

Unfortunately however Hyundai still hires their own designers while Proton has gone back to rebadging their replacement models. (Inspira and now Perdana)

I acknowledge that Proton has designed their own models but sadly today they just rebadged their latest Perdana.

sadly to say, proton has been made as a scapegoat for this new perdana. govt demand for a new d-segment to replace the obsolete perdana. check back the story about how PR state change to camry for official car, then BN blame them for not being patriotic. hence, as malay proverb said,’jilat ludah sendiri’, they asked proton to come up with new d-segment to keep the patriotic sentiment. bear in mind, to make new car doesn’t take 1-2 years. furthermore, proton don’t have d-segment base. since drb also own honda, govt urge proton to use accord as replacement. as malay proverb said, jilat ludah sendiri, proton has been asked to rebadge the accord.
proton is the victim for this exercise. d-segment plan wasn’t in their 5-years plan initially. the market are not there. in malaysia, how many people are willing to buy d-segment?
all in all, we have to think for a while. why govt want to change or spend for a new official car when bills of electric, astro, sugar, fuel, toll and others are increasing? they asked us to spend wisely, but them?

          • Penjajahan Semula on Dec 12, 2013 at 9:14 am

We have had enough of Japan cars. Malaysia is not a dumping ground for your old and unwanted engines. From 1985, we we stuck with old obsolete magma engines in the Mitsubishi. Now, we are stuck with Honda’s rubbish.

No idea why we have to take rubbish and obsolete parts from Jepun. Why our Gomen do this? Strike a deal with Jepun to sell Malaysians obsolete and useless engines? Mitsubishi did this, now Honda’s turn to sell trash to us. 30 years now, we still must eat berak from Japan. We can always use our Campro engines. Spend billions to come out with our own engines but don’t know how to redesign a new Perdana.

This is another penjajahan by the Jepun.

Same thing happen when the British came to jajah us and when the Japanese came to jajah us in the 50s. Our government then collaborate with them to strike a deal to do business. To want to make money for themselves. Then, got our country into trouble and colonised. Just one or two small ships sail to Malaysia, can overthrow few hundred thousand people kah?

The same happening now. Our government collborate to do business with Honda Japan to make Malaysia Japan’s dumping ground. Honda Japan also happy. They can sell old engines to us to clear stock. Why can’t we use our Campro engines and a new body designed by Proton?

Our Gomen again selling Malaysia to be colonised again. No backbone to do things on their own.

Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic in the US is US$15,000. That is the RRP. Some dealerships go down to even US$12,000. So, you can get a good C segment car for US$12,000. That also CBU from Japan. High quality Japan made car with airbags like 6 to 8, VSC and all that. Even at this price, the US government HAS already collected taxes and duty and the Honda and Toyota dealership is making a healthy profit.

Here in Malaysia, we get CKD Made in Malaysia Altis and Civic. CKD means most of the parts are Made in Malaysia. This should reduce the cost a lot compared to the CBU Honda or Toyota in the US. After all “Pakai Barang Buatan Malaysia”.

But sadly, our Altis and Civic is priced at RM120,000 despite being CKD.

So how can a car cost RM120,000 in Malaysia and the higher quality Japan made CBU higher specced car can only cost US$12,000?

Somemore, UMW and Honda Malaysia get their cars from their Principal in Japan. Don’t be surprised when the car comes to Port Klang, it is hardly Rm30,000 for a Altis or a Civic.

To add more, if it is CKD, the car will be worth even more less because the parts come from the principal at an even cheaper price.

So, taking the US RRP at US$15,000 (RM$45,000) vs RM120,000, we sure do protect Proton a lot.

Malaysia launches first car in 1985. So hyundai just started 9 years earlier really. Yet they even got full electric vehicles and hybrid.

“The first pure electric car developed by Hyundai was the Sonata Electric Vehicle in 1991”

In 1991, Proton came out with Proton Knight I think…ha ha ha

For your information, because of our government policies people are force to make drastic decision when buying cars. Look at the amount of tax is impose. Even some middle class people find it hard to make an ends meet, so they buy proton.

What kind of definition is that? Wealthy = driving in a Toyota?
LIke honestly, I know people who are chauffeured around in Rolls Royces and they don’t go about dissing other people for their ownership of second rate cars.

            Here’s what the wealthy drives:
            German cars!

            Here’s what the ultra-wealthy drives:
Italian supercars or British ultra luxury cars (many of which are under German ownership)

And btw, toyota cars aren’t that good, sure they’re better than Protons, but my Audi is far better. My Merc is also better than all your toyotas.

Also you stated that Proton buyers are the poor people of the society, the gov just bought some Protons, would you consider the government poor?
Najib’s electric bill is probably more than what you’ll make for your entire life, his government is by no means poor.

Official announcements have been made that not enough people are taxed enough hence the GST. To extract money. From the people. (Maybe not you though, since you be a wet behind the ears kid that still lives under your mommma’s skirt (school is out now, so I know kids like you have tonnes of free time).

So tell my so-called “learned” friend, how is his government is by no means poor? Correction: Individuals in the government are by no means poor (like you rightly pointed out by your comment on the electricity bill). The Government as is Malaysia is nearing bankcruptcy.

            Salutations to you budak kecik!

So please do not equate driving Protons with being poor. Will the rich really be driving the Vios? I know many people who have German and french cars at home but still have a Proton at home instead of some overpriced Japanese models.

and the tax impose on cars makes u escape higher income tax.. see that every country that implies lower tax on their cars will increase tax in income tax.. heck some country do both like singapore..

Government got time to do all this strecth limo and rebadged Honda and all that but big question in everybody’s mind is this…

Where is Najib’s promise of 30% reduction in car prices over a period of 5 years? Najib promised before the election that if we voted for him and BN, he would ensure that he would match PKR’s offer to reduce car prices. Najib himself quoted saying that the BN government would reduce car prices by up to 30% gradually over 5 years and we should trust BN. Infact he said BN always keeps to their word. 6 months have passed and nothing has been done.

Infact companies like Toyota and VW have increased their prices. What matters now is where is Najib’s promise and not some special stretch limo made by Honda for the PM.

Already 30 years Mitsubishi gave us outdated engines as part of their trash, now, Honda’s turn to dump their trash to us. We Malaysia is a dumping ground.

As your title says, don’t bother waiting for the 30% tax reduction from BN. After a controversial win at GE13, BN quickly sent out statements that reads, “The government has no intention of reducing car prices as Malaysians are already enjoying low prices….. it was on The Star.

Actually, just reiterate that Sharing platforms and rebadging is 2 different things.
Brands you mentioned, sharing same platform but still designing their own respective cars and own technology as well as producing their own cars.
As for Rebadging, in this case, it’s an outright Honda Accord previous model and Proton just slap on their own badge. You cant really call the latter a brand new car can you?

If that happen Proton share holder may propose to VW to kill the current Skoda dealership and re-badge Skoda as our National car for domestic market, wow that will be beautiful and especially Skoda car are getting more and more sexier…What about New Skoda Octavia for 85k? haha

No idea why we have to take rubbish and obsolete parts from Jepun. Why our Gomen do this? Strike a deal with Jepun to sell Malaysians obsolete and useless engines? Mitsubishi did this, now Honda’s turn to sell trash to us.

Our government collborate to do business with Honda Japan to make Malaysia Japan dumping ground. Honda Japan also happy. They can sell old engines to us to clear stock. Why can’t we use our Campro engines and a new body designed by Proton?

Our Gomen again selling Malaysia to be colonised again. No backbone to do things on their own.

I’m trying to make my point simpler.. hopefully I’ll make it easier to get it through you.

            What I’m arguing was that:
            1) Najib should use the car more and fly less. 2) When he does that, then he spent lesser government money. The government money is actually rakyat’s money from tax collection.
            3) That’s it. My argument is accountability. Memimpin itu suatu amanah.

There’s nothing about whether being perfect. He’s willing to take the responsibility, then he should be willing to pay for the cost as well.

Just find a reliable platform, copy and modified like what the japs did in the 80’s. So what’s wrong with that? rebadging is very common across all automakers. Even Peugeot, Citroen, Chevrolet, Ford, Holden, Volvo, Toyota, Perodua did the same thing on some of their cars. Even Ferrari shares their F430 platform and engine with the Lancia Stratos. Australia’s Holden also rebadge from Ford for more than a decade. So what’s wrong with that? Most Malaysian really know very little about cars, and yet they act like they know alot. And stop saying rebadging is copy-cat! It is under an agreement between two automakes and it is legal. In this case both Proton and Honda will profit from this, that’s why Mitsubishi are willing to share their lancer with the inspira. And the truth is Inspira sells a lot better than the Lancer, so Mitsubishi makes a lot of money from the Inspira as well.

why you guys notice those rebadging products like lancer and accord? let’s consider from year 2000 where proton did their home-ground car. waja, gen-2, neo, saga flx, preve, exora, suprima.
          how many was that?
i believe this accord project is because of govt pushing proton to replace perdana. however, no d-segment available, hence, accord has to be used (drb own both proton & honda malaysia). i blame govt for coming out this proposal rather than proton. proton is the victim. najib (or rosmah) is now know malaysia are in debt more than half trillion ringgit. why would they want to have new cars when it is not necessary? inspira is still new. exora can be modified to make it look luxury. doesn’t make sense.
i want to correct the mentality, supporting proton doesn’t mean supporting BN.

And, most rebadge by other auto makers are about learning from each other or to reduce R&D. Proton Honda collaboration is a one way street with proton learning nothing.

Please check your facts, thank you.

The “new” Stratos was first conceived as a one-off model by Michael Stoschek. It was based on a body designed by Pininfarina adn the donor car was a Ferrari F430. The company Lancia which built the original Stratos had nothing to with this.

However, there is NO agreement by Ferrari with Michael Stoschek (or Lancia) to produce the new Stratos for the mass market. Please read this.

Nothing wrong. Just says how talentless Proton is. And lets not sugar coat it, rebadging is outright copying! Just that it has been agreed by both car companies.

Also, the examples you quoted may not be the best. E.g. Lancia is owned by Fiat group which also owns Ferrari. Holden is more GM than Ford cos it is owned by GM and Mitshubishi? Well, lets just say that the only reason they are willing to do that is because they figured that with the duties and taxes, they will make more money rebadging than selling the Lancer outright.

But I want to ask something …. you mentioned that “Most Malaysian really know very little about cars, and yet they act like they know alot” and given your comments… are you part of that group too? :)

Wouldn’t it be much cheaper to buy it from Honda instead of getting Proton involved.

why must the car be rebadged to a proton!? why can’t the government just buy from honda and be done with!?

I will tell you why. its because proton is a crony company. some big shot umno guy must be making money. And we the people are the ones who will end up paying for it via GST, increase sugar price (don’t let them fool you into thinking that they are doing it for our good), increase electricity and soon toll.

I really hope I am not the only one who is sicken by all the bs going on.

Since platform development costs are too high, I wonder if PROTON should consider an alliance with any of the American carmakers such as Lincoln, or even Ford USA; one that essentially allows PROTON to outright buy/use their large car platforms for their Perdana replacement. There are some sleek models there, and since they are not sold in Malaysia, it shouldn’t be much of an issue. Samsung does something similar in Korea don’t they, where they use Renault platforms for the S car brand in Korea (only sold in Korea)?

I don’t think Proton must spend millions of Ringgit to develop a new D-segment car which cannot sell and uncompetitive… Better to develop cars for mass market which can sell like Preve, Exora, Saga’s and Savvy’s replacement model while still maintaining the pure spirit of Lotus Ride and Handling.. Quality and reliability of new and existing products must be improved as well… Proton also have taken a leap in terms of safety as well with Preve and Suprima S models.. I do think rebadging is Proton’s best option for now to replace aging 1st gen Proton Perdana fleets, though personally for me its better for Honda to supply Accords themselves to the gov, but the gov rejected the offer, so what to say? I’m sure Proton had been sleeping for a long time, but not today anymore…. They are moving, bit by bit, in the right direction, it’s late, but never too late…

Many car companies do share platform, example: Toyota/Subaru, Citroen/Peugeot, Nissan/Renault, Hyundai/Kia and many more, but both companies put their sweat and blood to make the product work for each company. They put their hard earned capital, knowledge and technology to develop TOGETHER a product worth Global/whole world market sale.As for P1 rebadging, it’s just a waste of time and whole lot of NAPping to make easy buck.

I think rebadging a car is a step in the wrong direction. However, even the previous perdana model was nothing more than a re-badge so please people don’t act too surprised. Preve and suprima S, good for preve very good for suprima s was designed and built from scratch so cut them some slack. However I do fear that it may meet the same fate as the inspira if made available to the public. The Perdanacord / sharing of tech between honda and proton can benefit proton in the long run. so dry your panties guys, its a good test bed.

To those who said we must help Proton to develop and grow. Oh well we helping them for more than 30 years already. But what we get back from them?
They said Proton help thousands of employees. But other car manufacturers also help thousands of employees by setting up local plants here.
The richer ones are still the owners of the company. These capitalists get millions of profit by ‘forcing’ people to buy Proton using patriotism methodology. So to hardcore Proton fans, pity you for being too stupid.

everyone is expert in car here.

build a car, is not like building a house. build a car, u need to ahve intensive research on the design, u need to have all the different new designed and built component parts.

you need new machine or robot to integrate all parts into one piece.

u need to minimise the cost to maximise the profit and momst importantly, create a master piece at the end.

rebadge or not rebadge, it is not as easy decision as ABC.

for malaysian automotive, since we can’t even build a decent engine even though spent billion in hiring foreign engineers, after 30 years, why not just rebadge ?

i love my toyota for its comfort and reliability. but, i also love proton for its ability to move from point a to point b.

so, if you can’t afford toyota and honda, so, do not bash it.

if u have a toyota or honda, just be proud of malaysian proton, at least we have a national cars.

If Proton works as a real private entity, not influence bu government, freely consider any commercial options include take-over/merging, freely pick the most voted CEO/Chairman, select supplier base on merits & cost, don rcv any gifted tax-exemption in the name of national building … and build a good quality, updated car etc. you can see the comments here will not mention abt gov & tax payers money.

Sure, Korea & Japan do support their national cars but they don have control stakes in each company that decide who will be the CEOs or chairman. And due to these reasons, they are competitive.

After that when we first heard that the govt is going to replace the old perdana with honda accord, some of u were like criticizing and complaining so much saying that the govt is wasting “duit rakyat” on this expensive option.

And now from what i know, by doing the rebadge thing to replace perdana, the cost should be lower compared to purchase a real honda accord. But some of u guys still bashing proton saying like “Proton should be shame”, “embarrassing to the world”, “Copy-cat” etc…

This time, Perdana but Accord-ish… God, my interest toward Accord is gone too. I’m not condemned Proton’s production but please, be more creative. Like you did to Preve. Frankly speaking, PREVE WAS A GREAT DESIGN and I like it. I believe your designers are working to their asses to create something beautiful, comfort, durable and better and cheaper and the same time but where is it? Still, congratulations with the new model Proton but I still disappointed with the design. It’s okay, you still have time to prove it! :D

Proton cant even create their own model and have to re-badge from other companies for their flagship car. If they are not lazy, they would have created more nice looking cars and become more success like other car companies. I’m not saying they are did not create their own model of cars, but why do they need to re-badge it from honda if they can make it themself, make it more luxurious and with better specs. If other companies can do great cars, why cant proton do it? If they manage to do it, they will get bigger and better and many other countries will look up to us and in the end proton can even end up to be a company like toyota or honda. I always hoped to see proton create their own sports car or something like that to show the others that we can. The proton pm5 was a concept sports car announced back in 2007, and i thought they would create it but in the end, no more news about it. Come on proton, you can do it.

woi bodoh. benci betul aku baca komen orang tak membaca ni.
check balik cerita asal govt perak (at that time was PR) tukar camry ganti perdana. semua macai BN condemn kata tak patriotik. then, keluar cerita kos service perdana sampai beratus ribu (related to terengganu state govt) and outdated perdana. govt must do something, kena tukar kereta. kena pakai proton jugak, kalau tak kena kutuk ngan PR. nak tukar kereta d-segment, tak kan nak pakai saga b-segment, apa kelas. proton takde d-segment. eh, drb own honda jugak la. eh honda melaka pasang accord. ok, suruh drb mintak permission ngan honda untuk rebadge accord. suruh proton tukar logo, bumper, rim, chrome semua.
ok govt is now using proton car. what you gonna say PR?
that’s the whole story. d-segment was not in proton 5-years plan initially.

What do all these commentors know about car production?
    1. Economic scale – cost of r&d + production against price for profits.
    2. If proton are to produce world class cars, due to their small volume of sales, the price would be double. So u people will have to buy vios at bm 320 price
    3. Do you know that the trend now is sell the best way u can. General motors (the largest car producer in the world) sell chevy optra in malaysia. In europe its vauxhall, Nabira in Malaysia as zafira in europe. All these are rebadging. For info: optra comes from daewoo korea.
My only suggestion to Proton is to look east i.e Korea. How did they manage to penetrate USA n Europe.

K5 and Sonata owners were lining waiting to come into the yard to have their cars traded in, stating that they know that no one will want to drive a D-Segment kimchi now. Really pity these fellas

With a few owners no willing to sell their 12 month old K5 at around RM40k, we may consider taking them for the export market.

Sonata still fetches around RM60k+. So the Sonata owners were a lot happier to know this when they found out.

And Oroton is smart in the way that they can now sell their car by tellin people that underneith it is all Honda so please buy it and people will go for it as the price will be lower as compare to Honda :)

You got the point. We citizens here complain on the part of ‘National Building’ where proton praise gov & vice versa on something that’s bullshits. Proton say they are 1 of the leading player globally which produce cars that can compete with popular brands (go check our market share globally). Proton claimed they’re 1 of the global car manufactures which own & designed their engines which proves they’re technology competent (pls read all reviews on proton including the paid reviews and see reviewer give positive notes on Campro engines, the consistent praise come from Lotus’s Ride & Handling, which proton bought during economic clearance sales).

So these are mostly our fuss.

You said the two companies “create such a good car for the people”, but that is not true for Tesla. It costs around USD 80K to buy a Tesla, yes that is cheap compared to a Mercedes here in Malaysia, but in the US, an E-Class could be bought for around 60K, it is is OUT OF REACH for the average American.

Yes, lots of Chinese people are rich, but I’m also sure that the vast majority of Chinese people (it has a population of 1.3 billion) cannot afford the Qoros.

I duno whether to laugh or cry. Proton is not doing itself a favour by taking the easy way out as far as being a REAL car manufacturer is concerned. This mentality or strategy of re badging cars is forever going to put Proton in 1st gear – the will never improve or progress.

When Proton used to be on par with the Korean makers, Proton is now lagging very far behind as a business concern. This just shows how much Proton is devoid of ideas, innovation and progression.

Always taking the easy way out by ‘celup’ by way of re badging. The only winner here is Honda, as suddenly their profits rise significantly through getting royalty, and at the same time Honda continue to keep up with world competition.

To say that “Even with such short request time, we were up for the challenge – and through sheer dedication and hard work,…” is the greatest BS of all.

If a re badging and touching up with new bumpers and cosmetics is “through sheer dedication and hard work”, Proton will forever be doomed.

Consumers like u and me will obviously rejoice, but in the larger scheme of things, it serves little purpose as our resources and expertise will not progress. Our nation as a whole will not progress.

Proton still very young if compare to the big boys. Our population < 15 mil when Proton Saga was launched. If our population is 70 mil then Proton sure can perform. Don't forget most Malaysian don't chose Proton if they can afford more expensive cars. (most of the brothers here are belong to this group)
Develop a new model is not easy especially for Proton as its production units is not many. Copy cat is not so easy as compare to old sakura time. So re-badging is only way out.
Nevertheless, I hope that Proton can re-badge BMW X5 and name it Proton 1M4U and sell at RM150 K; re-badge Porche 911 as Proton 11 and sell it at RM200 K. A 30 million population with 10-15 million working adults (no wage and brand preferences demographics but I can sense pent up demand for non national brands) just isn’t enough to sustain a capital intensive auto company. Proton should have gone busted a long time ago. They seriously need to ramp up their exports. Then again, is their products up to scratch in the international arena?

I have doubt proton can even sell it over the world like US, EU or etc. if it’s yes, do Honda allow? What is the accord status in the market? Low cost car? Do Honda really want to take risk? Or Honda have already restrict proton to sell the old accord over the world?

If technical know-how is transferred along with rebadging, I’m all for it.
Infact, I would love to see Proton get along with a tier 1 manufacturer, design their own body, but use chassis, engine, etc from the tier 1 companies (eg: Volkswagen,Skoda,Seat,Audi, Lamborghini, Bugatti; Fiat,Alfa Romeo, Dodge; BMW, Toyota to name a few). And like I’ve just said, technical know-how must be obtained along the way. It seems that only Proton is somewhat alone.

So please do make fool of yourself…8 mths is too damn F long to make such a lousy model furthermore is already an Accord out there you just put in new rims/steering/bumpers/liners and your badge! 8 months what a shame…oh please!!! In Europe a car manufacturer will only call a new model when they have new engine for it…not new badge then called new model?? Potong seriously when are you thinking to close down and have a warehouse sale?? Keep us posted otherwise please do more on R&D and make cheaper cars…and please tell your boss there in BNN to removed the excise duty and whatever fking duty to allow others to sell at more reasonable price where all other Malaysian can enjoy!!! ok potong please take my advise…you are not making your nation proud therefore seriously please consider winding up to make us proud! if i were the ceo of proton, i’ll ask my boys to wider and stretch the current preve and put in 2.0 or 2.4 engine for better drive train.. such a waste and looks no improvement when u took it other obsolete brand than rebadge it..

Unlike other companies which have survived on their own two feet, or got into partnerships to save cost; this company had so much money pumped from the government, along with a whole lot of protection, and yet it’s able to only do this. It’s still relying on protection just to survive. Would you buy a Proton if it was on a level playing field with the rest?

As for the comment below, at least Ford sells a global car that is one of the top selling models in the world, what does Proton have? Proton is also highly taxed. Vios, almera have advantages of being cheaper from normal taxing because it’s assembled in Malaysia. But the specs are still way behind Preve, and of course they are one segment smaller (B).

Ford has global car? You know how many years it’s established? Ford is wayyyyyy older than Proton.

It is a real deplorable situation when that is so little proton can do while they pride themselves as national automobile manufacturer. Solving gear box overheat issue, tuning of suspension(by Lotus)and change of plastic components are not accomplishment let alone the money spent.

In fact to promote the brand of Proton, we should use something build by us which includes the design.

My opinion, we should use Proton preve as a based for the limo conversion. Similar to what previously did by using proton waja for the limo.

With that, I can demonstrate a better impact.

This proton perdana still largely looks like a accord in every angle minus the stretch body.

For me, this is not something to be proud of as an official car for the Government of Malaysia

Most importantly, the crony gravy train MUST continue till kingdom comes ! By then, wouldnt surprise me where plo-tong workers would be migrating to Indon/Thai to work as maids instead, and maybe, just maybe by then, they will finally learn. A little too late perhaps ?

They copied and the car degraded instead

I probably get a lot thumbs down for this. But I would rather Proton did a re-badge version of Honda Accord.

We are the former owner of Perdana, and I can tell you in total confidence that model is totally scrappy at best. It has the power, you know the V8 engine? But power is all she got.

The re-badge version of Honda Accord 2008 may not sound glamorous to all but I ASSUMED she possess the same quality as the original 2008 Honda Accord. If Proton priced in a steep discount to the Original Honda Accord in the market, that could very well tickle my interest.

While some folks say it’s easier to rebadge to cut the RnD timing and resources lah, bukan senanglah nak design kereta baru from scratch lah bla bla bla… alasan tetap alasan. Hello, dah lebih 30 tahun masih tak boleh angkat ape cite nie? Cannot means cannot lah, a thousand excuses won’t justify your incompetence.

And ade yang bagi alasan cuma 3k unit dihasilkan dan ini one-off thing, jadi tak berbaloi buat model baru from scratch… hello, ciplak tetap ciplak ok, walaupun dengan pengubahsuaian. The “rebadge king” label will be on you forever. Kalau buat sekali dua tu dah lah tu, tapi ini dah 30 tahun masih main rebadge… so disappointing…

Kalau dulu main Iswara facelift, wira facelift, etc., trend sekarang pulak main SV – Saga SV, Persona SV,… Syabas dan terus tidur Proton!

Hello blck, why should I bash chevrolet? ek eleh, nak banding pun, pakai lah contoh yang elok sikit. Yalah tu, chevrolet dah lebih 100 tahun, proton ada lebih 100 tahun? Lagipun, the important point here, is that kalau main rebadge pun, dia org pon rebadge model baru.

Tengok org dah sampai mana? Hyundai dah jadi Top 5 auto brand kat US. Proton ada masuk market US? Mana maruah negara?

So wahai blck, cakap tak guna, market response is always the true final say. Kalau kau bangga sangat dengan model ini, go and get one yourself. I won’t stop you from maintaining your “jaguh kampung” mentality. Terus tidur dan mimpi lah ye…

Congrats to proton for being expert in copycat expert after this many years. For info im driving a proton and enjoy driving it. Cheap and reliable.

well here where my comments start. After many years we can see proton has evolved from the mitsubishi era towards their own design. evolution from Wira to Waja to Persona to Preve. i must say im impressed. from depending to mitsubishi engine to designing our own Campro. We can see proton moved from not only offering sedan car but they also introduced Protong Exora. I must say they are heading towards a right direction indeed.

This new chapter of rebadging new perdana replacement model is however a step backward i must say. In my honest opinion our PM deserved to be driven in a MERC or BMW after a hard day at work. dont get me wrong undeniably, this 2 brands are status of your success. Proton should be given a time or atleast should produce what their best at i.e car targeted for middle income group . No point in producing perdana replacement model if there is no market for it. other than a syok2 sendiri project. To me value for money car is proton saga. we can see most of newly grad and even middle income group are driving this car, bravo proton.. for making the right car for malaysian.

Going forward proton should focus in designing their own car and comes up with their own design. No point in producing a copycat model just to satisfy a narrow market where there is no economy of scale.

are u a NOOB in automotive news..and u didnt read the article dont u?

Proton design a lot of models on its own.

rebadge is a market strategy for some reason

There is many company that only rebadge and get a lot of sales.

Proton rebadge accordana just to fullfill govt requirements to have the old perdana replacement. govt requested this accordana to be finish in less than a year. rebadge is the fastest way.

why everybody here asking this car to be like this and that.. this car is for govt only and not for sale to public.

the mass production car will be different exterior and interior and will be on market later.

There are many companies? sharing a same platform and rebadging is totally different ball game. Take for example toyota and subaru share the same platform to joint developed their latest model. both companies benefits from this joint venture. in this case yes you may argue this is only for our govt use. Thats is why i stated i syok2 sendiri project. Instead of asking Proton to come up with a perdana replacement model (which take 1 year to “develop”) they can direct purchase a newer model from honda. This will saves 1 year of Proton man hour in developing this replacement model. secondly what im trying to state here is how proton should go forward. The key word here are “Evolution” and “transformation” .

Dont get me wrong i do support proton. i owns proton few proton cars my self, however we want to see proton going foward and not running back to our japanese partner. Do you want to see proton rerun of rebadging chapter for our national car maker after 30 years. if you do well u still dont understand the meaning of evolution.

Heran jugak kenapa masih ramai yang tak faham yang Proton boleh rekabentuk kereta sendiri tapi kalau perhara tu tak bar baloi, kit abeli dan rebadge aje lah….. kat Restoran pun sama, some items move slowly so we just buy from supplier and reheat…. kalau tak buat tak boleh sebab people expect to see it on the menu and a small number of peopel memang suka order benda tu… bisnes kereta tu sama lah jugak, Proton pakar kereta Bsegment dan entry-level c-segment jadi they design Saga, Persona Preve Suprima dan mereka juga buat MPV sendiri…. juga low volume tapi lebih tinggi dari permintaan untuk Perdana lah tu……

I don’t like to comment a lot just want to say rebadge something is good in some aspects but here I think proton is overdone. Its just like cheatinfg in the exam. Why goverment buy directly the latest honda accord by using AP. Its should be no problem and costless since they can issue themselves. I don’t think the cost to rebadge is cheeper than buyung directly.

Gov already said earlier, they want to replace perdana with accord. In meantime, maybe DRB who owned PROTON and shared-owner of Honda Malaysia come up with a win-win situation with GOV and Honda to rebadge accord as perdana,in the end proton can have a new D-segment car for mass production wheraas honda can clear their old accord stock. Rebadging is not illegal, but at 100k price is disgusting when the GOV promised to reduce car price. Some people want a drastic action, but by closing PROTON it is not the solution where so many people employed directly or indirectly by proton industry. As a normal citizen, i just want an affordable price for our local cars which intentionally established by Malaysian, from Malaysia and for Malaysian, just like other national cars in other countries, Holden,Skoda, SEAT,etc. We dont mind if Volkswagen buy PROTON, because we know at least the employability can be maintained, and GOV still get the money from tax. But, u all cronies worry u cannot get much as u get before, thats why GOV interfere with the deal and in the end proton owned by one of your cronie.Keluar mulut buaya, masuk mulut singa. Come on GOV, be straight for the first time,we are tired of YOU…

You want copy then at least have the effort to modify abit la.. Modify pon malas. Are we comparing with China’s copycat skills? China copy lower price stuff and Malaysia copy vehicle’s design? It’s embarrassing.

Get some 4 flat designers from local universities to come out with few designs, money circulate within the nation better than buying rights to produce cars that are rightfully others.

I represent all Warga Proton when I say that this moment serves as inspiration and motivation for us to work even harder than ever, to continue leading the national automotive industry,”

Saying “Continue leading the national automotive industry” in front of a rebadged car is just so counter-progressive. Sheeeesh.

Many are still complaining about how a 30 year old car company can’t make their own cars, “copying” someone else’s model, and too many are so overwhelmed by prejudice their minds are like sniper scopes. So focused on their hate all facts around them are blacked out. Let us get the facts straight about many of your claims.

    1. Re-badging is very common and everyone does it, for a 1 year old company, to a 100 year old company, get over it! Some motorcycle companies rebadge as well. Our closest example is the Naza Blade series, which are rebadged Hyosung bikes (Korean). It is done for a few things and in this case possibly technical learning (other reason include increasing product range and sales area). Both parties win in that Honda gets a bit of cash, Proton gets knowledge without the R&D sacrifice. That’s one example of the benefits of re-badging.
    2. Re-badging is NOT COPYING! Copying is plagiarism, much like what Chinese manufacturers were doing (or still is probably). This is with the agreement of both sides and as you might expect when doing business both parties get some form of benefit from the deal.
    3. Many are so blinded by hate, they forgot that improvements have been made. Less severe breakdowns, in many models less frequent as well. My neighbour has a 2010 Waja which still runs like new today. In comparison to my dad’s 2008 Waja, which is like a kit car with a backwards progress.
    4. “When will Proton be able to make their own cars? They’re already 30 years old!”. <-This is just plain stupid. I'm surprised they're able to type and breath at the same time, and control their bowels and bladder for that mater. First of all, 30 years is young and you can't compare the age of a company to your age (human). Second…Gen2, Waja, Saga BLM, Exora, Preve, Suprima S, Savvy, Satria Neo,Persona, were those made by Mitsubishi? Or maybe some sort of Asian magical pixies, some sort of revelation from above maybe, or was it you guys who made them?

Protect Proton on Dec 12, 2013 at 2:58 pm
“Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic in the US is US$15,000.
So, taking the US RRP at US$15,000 (RM$45,000) vs RM120,000, we sure do protect Proton a lot.”

To Protect Proton, I’m currently studying in the US. The US RRP for a Civic or a Corolla is not $15000. For $15000 you dont even get alloy rims. It’s $18000 thousand without options. For a comparable spec car it costs $22000 thousand here. You can check if you want, here’s the website. www.honda.com Yes, I agree that our government is protecting Proton. But $7000 in car price difference is a lot. It equals to RM22000. So, $22000 car here in us converted to Malaysian currency is RM70000. You dont take into account the petrol cost here. And the maximum octane rating here you can get from petrol pumps in Michigan USA is only RON93 and it costs around RM3.00 per litre. Don’t just post comment with the wrong facts. Thats all, thank you.

Older kimchis were also rebadges before.

KIA Carens was the Mazda Premacy. But that did Mazda a lot of damage.

I believe a lot of company did re-badge. Just wondering if they also said such following statement. “Even with such short request time, we were up for the challenge – and through sheer dedication and hard work, we are here today to present the completed Perdana – Tan Sri Mohd Khamil”

Is it really necessary Proton? If I were the CEO I would be extremely shameful to give a two-accords-attached-proton to a prime minister. Anyway it’s ok for now coz its Najib..

  • This is what we called Malaysian-mind. Fighting over their national car company, which is nothing to compares to anything. At the same time, Malaysians are becoming more stupid because they are fool by their government (all the time).

funy people are complaining about expensive cars. the reason cars are expensive in malaysia is solely because of car sellers taking profit of rm20-rm100k minimum.

blame the car dealers for marking up the prices.

  • Why so much unhappiness? As a satisfied American 8th gen Accord owner, I can assure this was actually a very good choice!

First, while I can understand the sensitivity over a Japanese company being involved in sourcing this car, please bear in mind that this is actually an AMERICAN car, built in Ohio, and thus not a vehicle produced by a WWII enemy of Malaysia. So hopefully that reduces the sting somewhat. Also, Honda Motor didn’t exist until the 1950s. Unlike Nissan, the other company whose product was considered, Honda has never been guilty of war crimes and didn’t use Malaysian slave laborers during WWII. They couldn’t have. The company didn’t even exist.

It doesn’t seem to me that consumer products are the sort of thing one should find offensive to patriotism. We buy plenty of Malaysian products here in the US. Should we be patriotically offended? Of course not. It is just business, and ordinary people benefit when business is conducted freely, because it keeps costs down.

If anything, what should offend folks is the limited scope of sales. Insist that your government allow everyone to buy these! They will be high quality, highly durable, and because they still have the SLA suspension setup, very fun to drive.

  • Michael @ Proud to be Malaysian on Feb 22, 2014 at 12:15 am

My personal view after reading through most of the comments above is that Malaysian cars are overpriced due to the taxes imposed and Proton needs to seriously rethink or revamp their designing personnel. Business should be business but without customers what could happen to a business. Car manufacturers always depend on the customers to obtain the majority of their profits. Due to this maybe in the future Proton should think of designing their own car albeit on a shared platform. Rebadging another car which has gone obsolete (or going to) is (personally speaking) another way to tell your customers that innovation is not one of the companies goals or defining qualities. If 8 months was too short, they should have requested for more time to redesign the Proton Perdana. They could have taken the accords design significance and moulded it into a really beautiful car. Sadly, due to reasons hidden from the public, Proton has once again, albeit forcefully, taken the easy way out. A simple but outdated solution to a longstanding problem in this country’s local automotive companies’ culture. If there are any leaders reading this, I urge you to fight for the consumers demands and then the business will take care of itself. Everyone Malaysian would want to be proud to own a national car fit to lock horns with the big boys of this industry. You will never know what will happen unless we try. If we fail, let’s fail while trying. If we dont fail then well done. Lets make the name ‘Perdana’ proud.

And to all, the views above are my personal opnion and it is not in anyway directed to disturb anyones feelings in any way possible.

    Thanks for reading! :)

I re-call Tun Mahathir once made the changes for better with the patriotic vision to Malaysian people by enforcing all ministries to use national car ‘proton perdana‘ as an official government car instead of BMW or Merc… A very good example made! fair enough….

But come on…. the reality today is although it was name as new ‘perdana’ the FACT is … its HONDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

    Tepuk dada… tanye selara !

Why we have to be so noisy talking all sort of things about cars? If some want to drive proton, it is good for him. Well, some may prefer toyota, also good for him. What the heck? I drive Bentleys but it does’nt mean other cars are crap. It depends on your affordability.
