BMW X1 compact SUV gets a minor refresh for 2014

2014_BMW_X1_05

BMW has announced (very) minor updates for its compact SUV (SAV, if you must), the X1. From March 2014 onwards, the already-facelifted BMW X1 will get new additions both inside and outside, though perhaps only Bimmer anoraks and existing owners will notice them.

Most noticeable of all is the new grooved front apron undertray – painted silver in both standard line and xLine, gloss black in Sport Line. Redesigned wheels and a new Sparkling Brown paint finish are also thrown in, and daytime driving lights are now standard on all models. The latter doesn’t affect Malaysian cars, as all BMWs here are fitted with Xenon headlamps with DRLs, right down to the base 1 Series.

Inside, all new X1s bar the base standard line models (like our X1 sDrive20i) get an additional soft-touch material lining the top of the instrument cluster visor – perhaps a stop-gap solution to complaints of the entry-level SUV’s all-around hard plastics. Also new are the stainless steel protector strips on the tailgate edge.

On the entertainment front, the BMW iDrive system (if specified) is upgraded with the latest suite of BMW ConnectedDrive services that are already available on newer BMW models. The recently-launched, xLine-equipped X1 xDrive20d model we have here should be getting this update soon. The iDrive-less X1 sDrive20i, perhaps not.

X1 is BMW’s biggest failure. The car is so rubbish that the hailat owners that trade in to me sometimes even cry. That day I offer RM90k for a 1 year old X1 and the owner cried like a baby. My Kleenex box also finish because cry so much like a baby. I also used some tissue to cry with my customer becaus eI don’t know what to do with so many X1 in my yard and nobody buying it.

X1 is pretty or fugly depends on how you look at it. Inside is very bare and the petrol model is now retailing with a discount of RM25k with 5 years BSRI or a variant with full iDrive at a discount of 12500k ono. You could also go for the pre-reg which is less than 190K in some showrooms.
The diesel model is also having the same discount of 12500k less with 5 years BSRI. Some showrooms are having their own free gifts so shop around if you really want one.

The propeller logo still a class above the ‘T’ and ‘H’, so apart from RV, people look at you differently.

I personally think the x1 looks fine the way it is. However the biggest disappointment is the interior. The biggest mistake BMW Malaysia made is omitting the I-Drive for the petrol variant. It made the interior look really bland. Don’t get me started on the n46 engine used in the pre-facelifted model!

While the facelifted model started using the newer Twin Turbo engine (still no bloody I-Drive!), I think by then the X1’s reputation has been damaged beyond repair.
