Politeknik Ungku Omar wins Perodua Eco Challenge 2013 – 20.95 km/l in a redesigned Myvi

puo-01

Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) was crowned overall champion at the Perodua Eco Challenge 2013, which happened last weekend at the Shah Alam go-kart circuit. The Ipoh institution, winners in 2011 and 2012, scored the most points out of the nine categories contested in the annual competition.

The polytechnic’s redesigned Myvi managed to travel a distance of 52.38 km on 2.5 litres of Petronas Primax 95 fuel (20.95 km/l). They also came up tops in the “Best Presenter” and “Styling” challenges.

“We congratulate PUO for their impressive performance today and to all the institutions of higher learning that participated in our biggest corporate responsibility programme,” Perodua president and CEO, Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said.

Launched in 2009, the Perodua Eco-Challenge was introduced with the aim of exposing students from local institutions of higher learning to a real-world working environment. In this edition, a total of nine institutions were selected to redesign a Perodua Myvi within a six-month timeframe.

puo-02

They are PUO, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UNIMAP) and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTEM).

The categories contested in this year’s PEC were “Longest Distance”, “Time Attack”, “Marketing Challenge”, “Overall Winner”, “Best Booth” and new categories such as “Styling”, “Best TVC” and “Best Presenter”. Two categories – “Best Booth” and the “Best TV Commercial Award” – went to UNITEN. Congrats to all winners!

Perodua spent a total of RM131,200 in prizes for PEC 2013, which is endorsed and supported by the Ministry of Education. Overall, Perodua has used some RM6 million for the programme since 2009, making PEC its largest annual corporate responsibility activity.

as an overseas grad mechanical engineer, i feel slightly disgusted with the fact that they give students a ‘production’ car to toy around with..
why not design a prototype from ground up to the finish. that would be more challenging and interesting, isn’t it?
and return more mileage like, 100mpg for example?
20.95km/l? come on, u can do better than that…
it’s just sharing my opinion anyway…

The part with using a production car, I agree.

But the part where they should make the car to have 100mpg is unheard of. The highest mileage for a production car is the Toyota Prius, which is around 50mpg (21km/l). That is a hybrid. Most would get 30-40 mpg.

Be humble a bit. Just because your rich parents sent you to study abroad doesn’t gives you the right to belittle the local students.

So, as the mighty “overseas grad mechanical engineer”, have you design a car that gives 100mpg, or even 50mpg? If you did, you’d be a billionaire already, selling engine patent, instead of complaining on Paultan.org

im just saying that it should return 100mpg for EXAMPLE. fyi,the Avion is a prototype sportscar that achieves 103.7 mpg in 1986.
my parents are poor farmers. i am always facing difficulties during those days and yet with perseverance (and maybe a little natural talent), i was able to go as far as i wanted to in something i chose and truly loved.
i have never design a car but i have modified my 3.8L inline-6 ’67 pontiac firebird i bought during my internship and it returns 29mpg. im still driving it along with my modified ’89 saga that returns 42mpg.
mechanical engineers jobs are very wide. we get involved in areas such as electrical & electronics, aeronautical, petrochemical, automotive as well as marine.
i am not complaining btw. i just speak out my mind. sori if u find it offensive.

As an oversea graduate, you should know, improving existing product is harder than developing new product from scratch. Because you have to work with the many limitations and constraints of the existing product.

It’s like saying fixing a badly designed house is easier than building a new house. Are you even an engineer?

University of Waikato in New Zealand. why?
but u need to acquire specific knowledge as well, not necessarily formal education. universities are leftist indoctrination facilities. and they r full of deluded morons. u must educate yourself.
Any damn thing u want to learn about u can learn about. u don’t need to spend time in women’s studies to learn it.
Every damn thing is on the internet, for free. If you want to learn about it the only thing stopping u is u.
I will say it again and again: Everything u learn in college is useless if u want to be an entrepreneur and it’s up to U to learn your craft.
        Cheers.

To be honest, it is quite interesting to see what kind of product the students can come up from the existing platform. And the competition format is changing every year. Build cars from ground up? That was the format the past two years. There are also competitions like FutureCar or FutureTruck in USA where you can’t change the appearance of the sponsored vehicles, but you can do anything you want to the drivetrain.

What they do is just cut off the roof and replace it with something lighter.
Remove the windscreen and replace it with plastic.
    Remove car seat.
    Remove this remove that.

Perodua quit wasting ur money on rubbish events like this and start to innovate.
People are adapting regenerative braking, better aerodyamics, fuel efficient engine to get good mileage.
It is a stupid and waste of money event done by Perodua.
There is no innovation created from this.
Heck even Mitsubishi Attrage can reach 21km/l without these “weight reduction” idea.

i agree with you. they did not define the term redesigned…..
but anyway, this is what i assume they do, though the list is not restrictive to only here:
      1) remove car air-cond and power steering components to reduce power usage
      2) reduce weight by replacing all car windows with plexiglass and car shells with fiberglass body kits
      3) put aerodynamic front bumper, rear wheel skirts, smooth hub cap and underbelly cover for better aerodynamics flow
      4) remove wipers, radio antenna, mud guards and side mirrors for better aerodynamics flow
      5) low rolling resistance tyres and lightweight wheels
but hey, it should return more than 20.95km/l.. even the advertised mirage and attrage have lower fc than that.. something wrong?

Obviously, you know nothing about this year’s event, rules and regulations.

        For examples:
        1. Aircond is a compulsory item. There is even one innovative team that run electric powered compressor with lithium battery that allows the aircond to run for several hours without engine being turned on.
        2. Power steering is a must. Again, there are teams running electric power steering to reduce engine load.
        3. The car has to be marketed as urban car with attractive features to target consumers. There goes your rear wheel skirt, smooth hub cap, underbelly cover and other fancy but ugly features as all of these will be evaluated in terms of product character, specs and marketability.
        4. Radio, wipers and side mirrors are all compulsory items.
        5. One team even install roof top solar panel and use it mainly to regulate cabin temperature when the car is parked outdoor. This help to reduce peak cooling load of the AC system.
        6. The same team also install thermoelectric generator to recover energy from exhaust gas high temperature and convert directly to electricity.
        7. There is a team with cylinder deactivation engine and electric supercharger.

There is nothing wrong with this competition, but definitely there is something wrong with you as you underestimated the knowledge and technical competence of local universities. The rules (for this year) doesn’t allow for hybrid drivetrain and one particular university already has retrofit hybrid drivetrain ready for installation.

By the way, the cars need to follow certain speed profile along the track with minimum speed at each section of the track. So, that harsh drive cycle profile really affect fuel consumption as I know they have sections with high speeds and low speeds alternately. The standard Japan drive cycle and EUDC drive cycle (used for fuel consumption test) are just a walk in the park by comparison.

puo won the competition with stupid idea that is impossible to be implemented.
so all the doctorate have other responsibility to maintain.
maybe u can figure out the main reason behind the clever competition with stupid regulation

P2 should just use the 1KR-DE 1.0L engine in Myvi for this so-called Eco Challenge (no need to reduce here and there as the engine itself is lighter by 12-15 kg plus extra 10 HP produced in 1KR-FE than older EJ-VE with only 58 HP). Plus with auto start-stop feature and a well-spaced Getrag manual gearbox (admittedly there’s a noticeable difference in shifting quality and smooth shifting in between gear between Getrag manual box in Saga FLX and current gearbox used in P2 manual cars), it can deliver about 20 – 22 km/l in combined cycle without the need of this kind of challenge.

Just my suggestion only, because Proton are already using Getrag manual gearbox for Saga FLX (including SV) and Preve IAFM. Plus, the shifting quality for current gearbox used in most P2 manual cars are below average (ie rubbery and unsatisfactory slotting in between gear) until even few manual kaki drivers settle for auto version for P2 cars.

Also, if using gearbox from different manufacturer (even if same type of transmission), the ECU need to be change/retune as well.
