Maruti Suzuki Ciaz – an Authentics by a different name

maruti-suzuki-ciaz-delhi 042

Maruti Suzuki has revealed its Ciaz concept at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. Previewing the replacement for the SX4 sedan (codenamed YL1), it’s another entrant in the burgeoning B-segment sedan sector.

Now, for those of you who feel a sense of familiarity – no, your eyes are not deceiving you. This is, in fact, the exact same Suzuki Authentics concept that was at last year’s Shanghai Motor Show; only this time it has been given a new name and a deep shade of red. Hence, the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz (pronounced chi-aaz) retains the same handsome styling and lack of a full interior with the Authentics concept.

What has changed are the details regarding the final production model. In India at least, the Ciaz will come with two engines – a petrol and a diesel. The 1.4 litre VVT petrol engine, shared with the Ertiga MPV, produces 95 PS at 6,000 rpm and 130 Nm at 4,000 rpm. The 1.3 litre DDiS turbodiesel engine, on the other hand, will be a carryover from the outgoing SX4, and it produces 90 PS at 4,000 rpm and 200 Nm at 1,750 rpm.

The production Ciaz will debut sometime during the Indian festive season later this year. As of now, it is unclear whether it will be brought in to Malaysian shores, as the SX4 didn’t do so well sales-wise over here.

    • They are wetting their pants because of a 95hp car?

        • I doubt that a car like this with 130 Nm at 4,000 rpm is fuel saving or eco… ;)

Rear look like BMW 5 series..

    • The rear 3 quarter of it with the mid body line and hoffmiester kink in the window in addition to that BMW-esque tail lamp really makes it looked like a BMW……or a more proportionately correct/sleeker 4th gen Honda City, depending on your perception.

Hope the production model stay true to the concept as far as proportion goes, currently the only Suzuki that looks great is the Swift Sport….or the timeless but almost a decade old Grand Vitara.

If they release the car looking something identical to this, most importantly without compromising the proportions, it is going to look wicked!!

China has improved their designs, India has. When are the Indonesians going to come up with proper designs?

Yes my dear Chinaman!! I praise and salute those brands and frankly I just adore how they design their cars, safer than a Preve, handles better than a Neo and not using a Mitsubishi 4G9X series for the new SUV soon to arrive!!, ohhh if only I could be working with them even as a janitor!!

Suzuki was never under Volkswagen. They had a deal on technology sharing and market opportunities that ended last year.

    • Hell, It took me by surprise to read that it was a B-segment car! My first impression is that this was a D-segment car.

Remember the Kizashi? It was planned for D segment in concept form (yes a real looker just like this one) but the end product suffers for being too small for a D segment car, leaving a confused marketing n pricing strategy. You barely see Kizashis anywhere, even worse in its homeland. Hopefully they get this model in the right category and price group this time. Put in some accessories (DRL, auto wipers/lights, TCS, etc) as standard and i bet it will be right up there against Camry, Accord, Teana and Mazda 6 this time around.

Nice car indeed if it stays the same for the production line. It would be great if they could add a turbo to the 1.4 95hp power unit.. B Segment that looks better than it’s own Kizashi… Interested to know what’s the gearbox though…
