Skoda VisionC concept – Czech brand goes upmarket

It is indicative of the bravado behind Skoda at the moment that it is introducing a stunning five-door coupe concept (and knowing Skoda, its concepts pretty much presage production models almost completely) barely twenty years after Volkswagen acquired the Czech carmaker, which had long been the butt of many a joke.

Making its way to the Geneva Motor Show is the new Skoda VisionC concept, which showcases the company’s sharp new design language in a more expressive and dynamic light.

As it happens, the sketch released earlier did a very good job previewing the frontal design of the car, the aggressive face transferring almost perfectly to the actual car. Triangular details feature heavily in the design, drawing attention to the Skoda family grille.

What we haven’t actually seen before was the rear end, and these pictures show a tail that tapers from the rear window in a manner similar to the Audi A7, which incidentally is also a five-door coupe. Sharp lines and angular surfacing give the car a crisp, clean look.

Skoda says that Volkswagen’s modular MQB platform the VisionC sits on allowed their engineers and designers to provide “plenty of room for four people and their luggage”. Under the bonnet is a turbocharged 1.4 litre TSI CNG/petrol engine, which the company claims consumes 3.4 kg or 5.1 cubic metres of CNG per kilometre and emits just 91 g of carbon dioxide per kilometre.

So, what do you think, is Skoda ready to go upmarket? No more doubling the value by filling up the tank, eh?

  • Skoda, makers of amazing light tanks and siege artillery for the Germans during WWII, to makers of sleek sedans for the Germans today. Personally there are some great cars in the Czech makers line up, the superb, Yeti and Roomster are cars with a unique czechkaslovakian identity. But as the Koreans learned, to capture a larger share of the market, following the German way of doing it prove to be an ideal formula, and i specify Koreans, because Skoda is loosing out to Hyundai recently in its home market.

Won’t comment much on the Vision C, it’s still a sketch after all and will wait for the real thing to now in Geneva. Initial impression are positive

    • The Skoda Superb is a chinese Passat with a Skoda sticker. What ‘unique czechkaslovakian identity’ you see in this car?

      • The Passat and the Superb share many similar parts and is built on the same platform. But the 2nd gen modern Superb is longer and has a higher roof. It also has a unique boot/tailgate combo(the only other car that has this is the 5er GT).
As of this Czech uniqueness I am talking about, they have the tendency to take in All that is good about German product and throw away why they believe is unnecessary and add stuff that are more practical. In other words the ideal poor mans VW(in Europe at least). Wish the ditch those VW DSG for conventional torque converter.

Er, no. The first gen Superb was a stretched Passat, yes. The second gen is a new development, even if it uses VW parts. Now perhaps the Chinese rebadge it (don’t think so though), but it is a Skoda.

The headlights are 100% Seat. I guess this would be sold both as a Seat and as a Skoda. Also, Skoda already went upmarket with the second gen Superb. And was punished for that by VW… VW said Skoda should go downmarket again (hence the Rapid), and they got rid of the Skoda management IIRC…
