Caught here testing in Europe by our trusty spies is the 2015 Subaru Outback. Based on the Chicago-debuting sixth-gen Subaru Legacy, the jacked-up estate could be heading towards a New York show debut, as did its predecessor in 2009.
The new Outback seems to eschew its rugged, utilitarian appearance for a more sophisticated urban look – more rakish are the windscreen and rear window, and we don’t see wheel arch extensions. However, there are still roof rails, discreet rocker panels and what appears to be a more angular front apron.
The face shouldn’t veer far from the new Legacy’s, including the long, double-creased bonnet and hawk-eye projectors. Ditto the cockpit, which should feature a new centre console, twin-gauge instrument panel and new air vents, although trim could differ from the Legacy’s metallic items.
Motivation is expected to come from the sedan’s 175 hp/235 Nm 2.5 litre flat-four and 256 hp/334 Nm 3.6 litre flat-six motors, although there’s word that the Forester‘s 2.0 litre flat-four turbo might join the party, if it doesn’t replace the big flat-six altogether.
The Subaru Viziv concept‘s diesel-hybrid powertrain could also see use in the new Outback, although whether that would happen at launch is another story. Production is reportedly slated to begin in June.
