SPYSHOTS: Third-gen Mazda 2 spotted in Europe

Spy-Shots of Cars

Spotted by our trusty spy photographers is the new Mazda 2 undergoing testing in Europe. The third generation of the company’s supermini was previewed by the Hazumi concept in Geneva last month.

As it happens, the Hazumi previewed the 2’s styling very well indeed, with only the lower front and rear bumpers set to be changed, as well as some of the showcar’s glitzier garnish such as the lights, flush door handles and slim wing mirrors. The sci-fi interior, on the other hand, will undoubtedly be revised more thoroughly for production, moving closer to the aesthetic employed by the Mazda 6 and Mazda 3.

Under the bonnet, the new Mazda 2 should get the 1.5 litre SkyActiv-G four-cylinder that is found in the Mazda 3 in certain markets. That engine’s output ranges from 100 PS to 120 PS depending on the region.

Also to be included is Mazda’s new 1.5 litre SkyActiv-D diesel that the Hazumi concept also previewed, which will cut emissions down to under 90 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre. The previous generation’s Japan-only 84 PS 1.3 litre SkyActiv-G engine could also be on the cards.

Apparent in the photos are the brace of cameras and sensors at the top of the windscreen, suggesting that the little 2 may get some of the more advanced driver assist technology from its bigger siblings such as automated city braking.

The car will reportedly make it to the Malaysian market during the fourth quarter of this year, which is extremely quick considering the car has not even gone through its international launch, expected to take place at the Paris Motor Show later this year.

    Mazda2 can be easily EEV qualified car too, just like Mazda3

    Should be no reason why MITI cannot approve it for local CKD production at maybe RM60K-70K price

    (EEV qualified car = zero duty price)

      It would be GREAT NEWS if Mazda2 CKD EEV at RM70k or less.

      Mazda 1.5 Skyactiv = 20km/L in Japan JC08.

      20km/L for 1000-1200kg category, Pass!
      EEV Standard:: 1000kg to 1200kg = 16.67km/L.

      I wouldn’t worry if they are or not. With the profits that Mazda will make from the new Mazda2, they’ll be buying struggling PSA before you know it.

      • Everyone stay tune because when Proton GSC launch I am sure MITI will introduce new rules and to protect the car in same segment if the market is very competitive.
