Ford Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition – only 1,964

Mustang 50th Edition 01

Ford has unveiled a special run sixth-gen Mustang variant at the 2014 New York Auto Show to commemorate its fabled pony car and its half century of existence. Only 1,964 examples of the Ford Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition will be built, with sales beginning in the fall.

The 50 Year LE steed is based on the 2015 Mustang GT fastback with a GT performance pack, with a 420 hp and 529 Nm 5.0 litre V8 at the heart of things. Transmission choices are a six-speed manual with a Torsen differential or a six-speed auto with a limited-slip rear differential.

The car sits on 19-inch alloys featuring a unique Y-spoke design inspired by the chromed steel wheels that were offered on the original Mustang 50 years ago. As for exterior shades, there are two exclusive colours, these being Wimbledon White – which replicates Mustang serial No. 0001’s shade – and Kona Blue.

Unique bits include the edition’s louvre-shaped rear quarter-windows, but unlike the external louvres as seen on the 1965 fastback, the new windows are comprised of layered sheets of glass built with a construction technique uniquely developed for this particular pony.

Chrome is featured, in the form of discreet highlights for the grille, side glass and tri-bar taillamps. The chrome bezels surrounding the base of each of the three taillamp blades derive their inspiration from the original 1962 design proposal by Gale Halderman, which became the basis for the ’64 production model. The three individual lamps on each side of that design were combined into a single tri-bar lamp cluster for production, but the original concept has been restored for this one.

The 50 Year LE will also be the only 2015 model with a large faux gas cap badge on the rear fascia, with ’50 Years’ added to the GT designation.

Inside, the aluminium trim panel spanning the double-brow instrument panel has an axel spin finish unique to the edition, and there’s also a special serialised and indivually etched ’50 Year Limited Edition’ badge on the passenger side.

Other dedicated bits include two-tone cashmere and black leather upholstery with a ‘Mustang 50 Year’ logo on the seat backs and cashmere-stitching for the steering wheel, instrument panel, shifter boot, centre armrest and door inserts, as well as loop-carpet floor mats with cashmere stitching and suede binding.
