Formula E Putrajaya ePrix – circuit layout unveiled

Circuit details for the second round of the 2014/2015 FIA Formula E Championship have been revealed with the layout of the Putrajaya Formula E race, which will take place on October 18.

The 2.56 km-long ePrix course is located near Perdana Putra, which houses the Prime Minister’s Office, and will use much of the main high street, running along buildings such as the Ministry of Finance. The temporary track will feature 12 corners.

The circuit, put together by the FIA, Formula E and local promoter Formula E Malaysia (FEM), also plies the Seri Wawasan Bridge and Putra Mosque. It will see drivers tackle a mixture of straights, slow to medium speed corners, a hairpin plus a tight first-corner chicane providing good overtaking opportunities.

Formula E Putrajaya circuit layout

Last month, the circuit design for the season opener of the championship was unveiled – Beijing’s 3.44 km street circuit will run around the grounds of the Olympic ‘Bird’s Nest’ Stadium. The next circuit, the Formula E Punta del Este ePrix in Uruguay, to be held on December 13, will be revealed six months prior to the race.

The 10 city-centre races in the inaugural 2014/2015 Formula E calendar will see ten teams, each with two drivers, going head-to-head in the Spark-Renault SRT_01E full-electric single-seater race car.

Formula E races will be held over a single day in order to minimise disruption to each host city, with a free practice session, qualifying and 60-minute race – followed by a live music concert – taking place on a Saturday.

  • Are they going to build a track for Formula E? Or this will be permanent?

Going by the many restriction in Putrajaya like not allowing booze sale. Is the authority going to give some leeway during race day?

What’s wrong with this being a Muslim country. It is the constitution anyway.

Somehow, I sense that some ministers would surely bising-bising about the event……about umbrella girls that are normal in many racing events around the globe.

    Let’s wait and see.

  • Saturday? Why not Sunday? Some offices will be open and this will probably cause some inconvenience to those…

But otherwise, looks and sounds interesting!

from how i see it, its a low downforce, high speed layout. lots of straights with corners that are super slow. should be fun, i hope.

Not really. In fact quite the opposite. Street circuits are always high downforce because the straights are rarely long enough and a lot of slow corners. Track length is only 2.5km. The straight sections are quite short. Top speeds are low compared to purpose built tracks

Correct me if im wrong, but these are electric cars right. No combustion engine. If so, they will make very little noise, maybe a bit of motor whine. The most noise will be from the tyre roar and squeel/screech (or from an irate driver, haha). If people think 2014 F1 is too quiet (and they have real combustion engines & 8 speed gearboxes), i can’t imagine what they would say about this Formula E, which I should think only needs 1 speed gearbox, as electric cars are such that 100% torque is available at 0, or is it 1 rpm.

Passed by the road from Masjid Putra to PICC today, and now I know why they resurfacing with tarmac part of the road that was covered with tile… it’s for corner 1 and 2 of the track.

From the look of this layout, the best corner should be between corner 3 and 4 where the road decline from corner 3 to corner 4 and from corner 4 to corner 5 will be slight increase (barely noticeable). From corner 5 to corner 6 will be another decline (less than corner 3 – 4) before the road continue to slightly increase at that bend from corner 6 to corner 7.

I will be at corner 4, smack infront of my office. :D Yay!
