The new Nissan Sylphy is now open for booking (estimated prices are RM115,300 for the 1.8 E, and RM125,500 for the 1.8 VL, CBU Thailand), but its official Malaysian launch is more than a week away. But fret not, as we’re giving you an exclusive early walk-around tour of the new C-segment contender.
This new Sylphy is quite a bit different than the old one you’re familiar with. The original G11 was launched way back in 2008 after all. So it’s time you get cozy with the new version, starting with our video tour that explains all the changes, both inside and outside.
You can read our full and exclusive review of the new B17 Sylphy to know more about the car’s intricacies and how it is to drive and live with. But even us writers know that words can only do so much, so go ahead and watch the clip above. There will be more videos coming of course, so do subscribe to our YouTube channel when you’re done. Thanks for watching :)

Its cbu from thailand, i thought they delayed for 2 years to produce local part for ckd. Anyway 6airbag,vsc,tc as stndard is superb.
At Indonesia, nobody buys Proton Preve full-specs at RM90K…wonder why…??
After 2 and abit more years, the Japanese are finally getting serious in specs and catching up with the Koreans and the sub-premium Euros. The City showed us the the Japanese can in fact give you excellent specs in a B-segmentm, and the new Sylphy tops that even furthur. Standard VSC/ESC across the board but thats old stuff and only the Corolla missed out…..standard 6-airbags across? Thats the stuff.
So Honda, you better get cracking, thou rumors stating that a June debut of a MMC for the Civic will up all airbags to 6 and I bloody hope that is true. and UMW….well you missed out your chance, Sayonara ,Jidosha Kaisha no baka
Come to think of it, its 1.8l throughout the range and is price very close to a 2.0l. The 2.0l Civic Navi is pricier by RM2k over the Sylphy 1.8 VL. But I think the advantage of tax and side airbags speaks for itself.
And the slight gains in fuel economy as well. I doubt many will miss that 0.2L of displacement when they buy a Sylphy. You know you’re not going into a performance-oriented vehicle so as long as the engine is not underpowered (and it does not seem to be) then it’s all good.
While the 0.2L displacement loss only yielded 2 hp less than the outgoing 2.0L, it does loose some 20Nm of torque. Something you will feel.
But the slightly lower power is a decent tradeoff for more comprehensive safety gear, something he have been sorely lacking in most of the other Japanese C segment players at the moment.
The Altis is toast. And with the City now having a 6 airbag option, there will be little doubt the upcoming civic will probably have 6 airbags as standard as well.
The new one looks so much better than the old outgoing one.
BTW a little error, the 1.8VL is priced RM2k less than a Civic 2.0l S(RM128k OTR), not the 2.0l Navi which is priced at RM133k OTR. Basically RM5k for an upgraded infotainment in the Civic which gives you navigtion and Bluetooth handsfree……better than RM4k for additional airbags. The Civic also edge out for those looking for a more sporty sedan that can ferry families from time to time, and the Sylphy is down 23hp and
16NM form the 2.0l I-VTEC(10hp and no torque change from the 1.8l I-VTEC) and both are moving about the same weight(1265kg on the Sylphy with the Civic a toddler-weight lighter). Add to the fact there is paddle-shift on the Honda.
I think right now the losing factor of the Civic is the quality….theres hard plastic everywhere and even the little high spec City gets some soft touch in the dash. The absence of 2 more airbags (4 for the 1.8l)is the last safety upgrade as VSM is already standard across the board(Corolla being the only C-segment that is not). But all in all, I think the target market for both cars are different, Sylphy for matured comfort, Civic for the young family.
side by side, the old one really looks awkward from the front compared to the new one.
if there is one thing I think they could have done would be to have the oyster/cream coloured interior like the older Teana and Sylphy, somehow it makes the car look more expensive imo.
For price rm115k, u get:
1. No auto fold side mirror
2. No rear aircond
3. No electronic controlled aircon
4. No rear aircon
5. No push start button
6. No fog light
7. No….
So many Toyota salesmen getting worried and discrediting this car early. They know that their Altis is finished if the high spec Slyphy is just RM125K.
and RM125k for 1800cc is the Most Over Priced C-segment.
1.8L @ RM125k? U gotta be serious.
Suuure…you’d rather have auto-folding side mirrors, push-start, auto climate control, rear aircond vents and fog lights (things you can really live without) than VSC and 6 airbags (things you hopefully won’t have to use but might not live without). And do we still need to wonder why Toyota is still skimping on safety features?
For me, I can do without the dual zone aircon control, the fog lights and the push start button but I would definitely miss the auto fold side mirror and rear aircon vent.
but for RM:115k you will get a
1.brand new very stylish
2.best in class comfortable quit cabin
3.best fuel economy in class with smooth ride
4.best in class safety
isn’t that enough for you?
1. Opinions may differ
2. There is no proven test, but I’ll agree that Nissan has generally great NVH in their car
3. Look point 2
4. It does have side airbags, but IIHS test begs to differ as far as withstanding a crash.
Based on Taiwanese Test.
Corolla Altis 1.8, not as good as Sylphy below 60km/h.
above here, Altis show significantly lower FC than Sylphy 1.8.
Eco Mode will allow u doing >25km/L for Corolla Altis at 90km/h.
what???!!! look like the rear seat is the fix type (not the split-fold type)!! what a disappointment.
You’re right…yes in this era, what’s a disappointment
For the past 10 years, I have owed the B segment car for T, H and N.
Till today, still driving the T at 120,000km without any problem but N with 90,000km has given me a lot of problem especially the costly suspension parts.
The following parts price (exclude labour) at the center:-
1) Suspension mounting at RM 200++ per no. (changed 2 during 60,000km)
2) absorber at RM 240.00 per no. (changed 4 during 80,000km)
3) wheel bearing at RM 900.00 per no. (Changed 2 nos before 85,000km)
4) Belt at RM 200 per no. (changed during 60,000km) now at 90,000km and sound reappearing)
5) Skim the rotor disk 3 times.
Beside the costly parts, the 2nd hand value is shit.
The 2011 sylphy bought at RM 118K and the resale value now is at below RM 60K.
Better think twice with costly part and poor resale value. there was the reason most ex sylphy owner not able to change their car because the resale value is too bad.
Think twice to buy Nissan if no big discount.
Hello Messi, I think you are just one who had the rotten apple among the crop. It happens with every car make. I have been owning Datsun’s since the 1970’s, Nissan’s in the 1980’s, 90’s and till now. In total thats 6 cars. All my cars lasted more than 8 years on average, with some exceeding 10 years. I have not encountered the problems you mentioned about, maybe because I have been servicing my cars regularly at the service intervals. They are so reliable in fact that driving schools were using them in the 70’s, 80’s and Genting used them as taxi’s for the taxing journey up and down Genting Highlands, which is very taxing for most cars. So, in conclusion, I for one strongly believe they are the most reliable Japanese car in the market today. Of course, you and others have the right to diasgree.
I couldn’t agree more with lim hh. Forget about the RV, Nissan is such trusted brand that my old faithful Sunny served me for 30 long years, it didn’t give me serious problems and I had never been stranded while driving the car. I was forced to sell it because I moved to a G&G housing area which allow only 3 cars, no more spare car for me so to speak. The bottom line is you must send your car for service regularly.
Your statement is too subjective. It could apply in cases you drive nissan on certain instance & toyota at another. Exp Drive Nissan to work over road full of speed bump, drive toyota only on city road with lot of traffic but better road cond.
If a car is really bad, a lot will post this type of complains, not only you. We can see this on proton cars, their users want to smear them as a way of protest. But from all comments here, it only proven that either you are the only unlucky one or you’re fan/sales man from nissan’s competitor.
(estimated prices are RM115,300 for the 1.8 E, and RM125,500 for the 1.8 VL, CBU Thailand)
Consider a reasonable price but if it gets lower then or around RM110k will be a great price… then it can kill UMW new altis…
Pls, dun worship too much on this car. U will cry seeing this car used as budget taxis in thai or indonesia.
Toyota’s are the cars most used as taxis in Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. I have yet to come across Nissan’s or Honda’s.
In Malaysia, I could only see Sylphy and Latio used as taxi but not H or T. Toyota Camry are mostly used by hotels to ferry VIPs.
What lame comment.. Any idea mercedes as taxi?
So if countries like Germany uses Mercedes as standard taxi so you should not worship Mercedes as a luxury brand?? You are an idiot to glorify malaysia high car prices as we can only afford Saga as taxi while other countries can use Toyota, Suzuki and other makes as taxi. Please forever stick to your Saga SV and never change it since I’m sure thats the car you worship the most and driving now.
If you been to Germany, you will see the streets are full of Benz E200….but taxi! So, ask Benz buyer in Malaysia not to buy E200 as it is used as taxi in Germany.
Mercedes commonly being used as taxis in germany to commemorate that brand as their national brand, as well as proton to this nation. Car like nissan and toyota were picked as taxi due to their simple mechanisme tht resulted to uninspiring drive and cheap to maintain, unlike honda or bmw.
Sorry but this is going to get slapped real hard when the new 308 comes in.
count how many ‘now’ he uses in the video. now, watch the video again. hahaha…
Nissan for life ! good move for Tan Chong this time
OH NO!!! Say it isn’t so. The design is even UGLIER than the current one. A STEP BACK!!! *facepalm*
he same can be said about your looks… What do you know to comment about design which is a subjective discussion?
Dont bash me~~ I kind of prefer the design of new altis than this. However, altis is famous of poor handling.

There were some fast parts and some parts were a bit unclear but most of his speech was pretty comprehensible. Maybe you’d better brush up on your listening skills.
Too much Brandy I supposed?
I think the speed is already, but i think he should speak a bit clearer/louder and some words are not discernable to me. I think speech clarity is of ulmost importance if you are a commentator.
speed is alright*
about the youtube review.
can you hafriz shah review a proton car like that?
because the car is nissan, from the starting point in your video, you gave some aura introduction. and of course you cannot make it for proton car.
review budak sekolah.
how much nissan pay you to promote?
What does your aura introduction mean?
Anyway, Proton has not had a major car launch since paultan.org officially started doing walk-arounds. Do you expect them to do a walk-around for cars that you can see for yourself? But if you dig back far enough, you’ll find this sort-of-a-walk-around of the Suprima S comparing it with the Preve:
http://paultan.org/2013/08/18/proton-suprima-vs-preve/
You can see how much Hafriz has improved. :)
Now put a lid on it.
If ever these reviewers gained money to promote and review the cars, don’t you think Proton have to pay even more to get an ounce of decent review for their cars??
If you look further back into the archives there was such a review for Preve vs Suprima or the first episode of Driven where Suprima lost out to the Vios. I guess you didn’t bother to check being the usual basher you are. Makes you look like the budak sekolah.
So how much proton pay you to promote their cars??
Cheers
Nice car with good looking yet simple interior. The only thing i dislike is the 3 spoke steering! Boy, 2 spoke or 4 spoke (my choice) steering is far more safer to have control over the car (just my opinion).
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the spirochete bacterium Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum. Ops… Wrong forum.
Lol
Well done, Hafriz! Getting better and better with each on-camera appearance.
1.8 full spec at 125K is a rip off. After all nothing great to shout about.Ford Focus or the Elantra is more value for money.
Elantra? I understand the Focus or Cerato but Elantra?
Ford Focus and Peugeot 308 might be better drivers cars, but both of them are not suitable as family cars, as they have very crampped rear seats and overall legroom is very poor.
Which is why the comparison should be limited to Honda Civic, Toyota Altis, VW Jetta and Mazda 3.
Don’t you know Nissan.. some of us need to buy & carry something that is long & we need to fold the rear seats? You are lagging in this matter & never response to market.. thumbs up to honda & some other brands… almost all Honda’s sedan ve foldable rear seats.. best is City’s set up. Ford Mondeo is a good example too.
in-term of safety, interior looks much better than it competitor. also hope the estimated prices, RM115,300 is OTR price, if not, become exspensive and higher than it competitor.
thank for good review video and waitng for test drive.

Hello, Lim Ah Pek, you are right during the era of 70,80 or even 90 but not 2000 onward.
The nissan Datsun, 180K, sunny is no 1 in malaysia the most reliable car during these period of time.
Come on, now is 2014 and nissan ranking is dropping and no longer having the same tune as the 70/80/90.
Please grow up Ah pek and dont use your out dated mind to talk rubbish here. Malaysian like reliable car cause car price in malaysia is super high.
Why malaysian choice Toyota for the past 20 years and using the same old engine and maintain no 1?
Lim Ah Pek, Nissan parts is expensive (bearing cost RM 900 per no) and not reliable as during the 70/80/90.
You are behind time and still follow your 70/80 mind.
I think you have yet to try other and do a comparison and still using the No:1 nokia phone during the 2000.
I have been using nissan since 2005 with nissan serena C24 and latio now. I can tell you the problem with nissan from A to Z with the most recent 9 years experience and not based on your past 70/80/90 experience.
No need to tell me how reliable nissan car during the 70/80. My ex Honda city 2003 DSI dont even need to change anything after 100,000km.
Grow up Lim Ah Pek.
all ok but the price..
The 10k Difference between E & VL model.
Question is Who will buy the Basic E model since he/she can afford to buy 100k cars.
The “E” model INTERIOR is “OUCH!!~~”
The “VL” model is INTERIOR “Cool~~”
Answer is my MOM will get the “E”,
and I will buy the “VL”
Nissan , so late bring this impressive vehicle to here. I hate u~
U make too many rakyats rip off by T & H oredy *_*
Will ECTM bring in a XVL version with satnav and electric front seats..?
Or the 1.6 turbo engine from thailand pulsar..
1 thing for sure after seeing Nissan offering, we should really start boycotting umw cars. Even uncle design Nissan cars are now focusing on safety and value for money. Only umw still taking their loyal fans for a ride.
And serve those who blindly buy cars with badges right. Those who bought vios, city came out. Those who bought altis, slyphy and Mazda 3 came out with so much more value. And the best part? They are all Japanese cars. Really comparing sushi to suhsi this time.
Can’t wait to see how honda will play their cards in the c segment now with Nissan already overtook them with value buy. Umw sedans already totally hopeless so I don’t bother comparing their cars. N,M and H – fight!
What is the 0-100 time on this beauty? I read 9.6 seconds on one article and 11.4 seconds on another. Which is which?
One Complaint, Nissan SPARE PART super Expensive, Driver’s Power window regulator + labour RM940. I changed it at outside with original parts + labour RM380 ONLY. They really Suck your blood dry, pray hard for your Nissan car.
You are absolute right. I am not here to condemn the Nissan center. The center is sucking blood.
This apply to the wheel bearing (Latio) cost RM 900.00 at center against outside at RM 260.00 (with good ntn brand).
You need to know where to find the parts or your pocket will burn a big hole to own nissan.
eh mind sharing where you get the parts for Latio? My wife bought a used Latio Sport, 100k km now, would be good to know a good place to get parts. Thanks
Hi Hafriz, I own a 2012 Sylphy 2.0 XV (the exact same model in the video) and went to see the new 2014 Sylphy model at the showroom recently. Just to share:
1. Looks are subjective, I think the current one is OK looking.
2. the current 2.0 XV has better front and back seats and feels more spacious than the new one. When I sat in the driver’s seat in the new one, I failed to notice any improvement in the extra width. And at more than 6 feet tall, my head touched the roof liner when I was at the rear seats. I don’t face this problem in the current Sylphy.
3. I think even the younger people prefer the rear sofa seats of the old Sylphys. Nothing special about the rear seats of the new model, just the new rear air-cond is nice.
4. The i-Key is not new to new Sylphy. It was around since the introduction of the Latio in 2007. And available on current Sylphy, Almera, Grand Livina, Teana, X-Trail, etc…
5. While the new Sylphy has plenty of extra features and safety equipment compared to the old, I’m not impressed that there is no integrated GPS as found on the previous Sylphy.
6. No new performance Impul bits on the new model?
why no body kit and it would look nore sporty
