Beijing 2014: China-only Kia K4 sedan breaks cover

Kia has unveiled its new K4 Concept at Auto China 2014 – the study previews a China-only sedan the Korean automaker will bring into the market sometime in the second half of the year. Assembly is set to take place at Dongfeng Yueda Kia’s plant in Yancheng in Jiansu province.

The company describes the car’s exterior form as ‘simple, distinctive and dignified’, and as for size, the 4.72 metre-long K4 – which reportedly sits on the same platform as the Hyundai Mistra – slots in between the 4.84 metre-long K5 Optima than the 4.56 metre-long K3 (the Cerato here).

Width is 1,815 mm, while wheelbase length is 2,700 mm, the latter identical to the K3, but slightly less than the Mistra’s 2,770 mm. Plenty of interior space in a ‘skilfully packaged’ cabin, so it is claimed.

For Beijing, the concept is equipped with the 201 hp and 265 Nm 1.6 litre turbo GDI mill as seen on the pro_cee’d GT, paired with the company’s new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The show incidentally heralds the engine’s first appearance in the Chinese market.

The glam powertrain won’t be the only engine on call for the car – reports indicate that more sedate 1.8 and 2.0 litre normally-aspirated options will headline the K4 in series production form, with the 1.6 turbo becoming available later.

Standard equipment includes push-button ignition, a Supervision instrument cluster and Kia’s UVO infotainment system, while safety kit includes six airbags, ESP and a rear-view camera.

    • carrefour is a french hypermarket now owned by aeon. typically, french doesn’t pronounce the word as the spelling so it’s not K4 as u’ve mentioned above. please do some study before u become a laughing stock here.

usually when I see a Kia article, I will pull out my “1001 praises for a beautiful design to write in a Automotive-web comment for dummies” book [NY times Best Seller!], pick a sentence and type it in…..not quite this time.

Its not a bad looking car,no where close, saying it would be a outright lie(and get me killed by the K-fans) but neither is it outstanding or show stopper which I usually get from a Schreyer design. Its the same problem I get with VW cars, its a very contemporary design. Which gets my like, because I like cars that sort of the good-looking guy in the crowd, a sleeper car, something VW, Honda and Volvo are very good at, not the show stopping K-pop star….now all I need is thicker tyres and it’ll be great.

Say goodbye to Jetta. With that design and performance, the volkswagen C-segment look outdated.

Are you out of your mind? I dont think this is even targeted at the Jetta. Its more hitting out at the new Chinese Corolla, Slyphy market.

    looks like Peugeot 408.
not bad for the body design, engine spec, safety etc.
    Wish they improved the handling.

Considering it is a China only model I’m surprised they name it K4. Hopefully the Chinese are not that superstitious

This car highlights the dangers and worries over “brand identity” designs : all models look 90% similar from the front.

Gotta agree with you there. All brands are trying to go down the ‘Camry/bmw/aston’ route by having nearly identical designs.

It may help cement a brand identity but its bound to dilute the design over time until it becomes like shoe sizes.

  • weird… for all that I remember the previous gen 3 series coupe was meant to be named as the 4 series before marketing people at munich thought it would be disaster due to the ever growing chinese market… BUT Kia launch the K4 just for china… this is weird.
