Audi A1, A3 to get three-cylinder engines – report

The Audi A1 and A3 are set to get three-cylinder engine options, according to an Auto Express report, with Audi CEO Rupert Stadler telling the British publication that the three-pot would be a standard engine in both models in the future.

While the A1 would be the first Audi to get the engines, followed by the A3, Stadler noted that it would be some time before the motors do duty in bigger models. “I think for a while, we will stay with the entry-level products – I’m not quite sure if the market in the mid to long run responds to three-cylinder tech. But just look at it 10-15 years ago when six-cylinder was a must and now four-cylinder has taken over.”

The Volkswagen Group’s triples include a 90 PS 1.0 litre TSI used in the UK-market Polo Bluemotion TSI (Mk5 facelift), and a 1.4 litre TDI producing either 75 or 90 PS, but Auto Express says we can expect higher states of tune for the A1.

The Audi CEO also revealed to Auto Express that an Audi A6 plug-in hybrid would launch in China later this year before moving on to other markets. There will also be plug-in hybrid versions of the Q7, A7 and A8 in the future, he added.

The third-gen Audi A3 was recently declared 2014 World Car of the Year at the NY International Auto Show.

At the rate things are going, 3 cylinders will soon be standard engines and 2 liter 4 potters will become ‘large displacement’ :(

I wonder how my grandkids will react in the future when I tell them that engines used to use a form of liquid gas for power.

“HAHA grandpa you are such a joker! You meam you had to PAY for fuel!?”

    *sigh*

I agree to u Holofanboi. There’s still hybrid because we doesn’t have many wireless charging stations infrastructure not just in Germany and The States but the entire world .
For the future generation, it all about liquid example : ethanol , methanol and water and c that generally move the vehicle’s motor.
We will miss Internal combustion engine but will not be forgotten :)
