Nissan Sylphy 1.8 (B17) launched – RM112k-122k

nissan-sylphy-lead-pic 091

At long last, the B17 Nissan Sylphy is officially launched in Malaysia, at the Grand Hyatt hotel in KL. Thanks to our exclusive and extensive pre-launch coverage of the C-segment sedan, comprising a detailed review, walk-around video and old car, new car gallery, there isn’t much you don’t already know, but now, the finishing touches.

Motivation comes from a new 1.8 litre MRA8DE four-cylinder engine that produces 131 PS at 6,000 rpm and 174 Nm of torque at 3,600 rpm. This mill, featuring Twin C-VTC and a ‘diamond-like’ carbon coating, is mated to an Xtronic CVT that’s now lighter with less friction. Fuel economy is a claimed 15.6 km per litre on the JC08 cycle.

Built on a stretched V platform, the new Nissan Sylphy is 4,615 mm long, 1,760 mm wide and 1,495 mm tall, making it 50 mm shorter than its predecessor, but a whole 60 mm wider, increasing shoulder room by 30 mm. The class-leading 2,700 mm wheelbase remains, affording 680 mm of rear legroom, while the boot, containing a full-size spare wheel, holds a cavernous 510 litres.

Noise and vibration have been reduced, thanks to an improved frame, stiffer cross member and added insulation. A longer suspension travel works together with high-response dampers to improve vibration absorption. Forward visibility is also enhanced; from a 35.6 degree viewing angle on the old car to 36.5 degrees.

E and VL variants are available. Standard on both are wing mirror indicators, speed-sensitive electric power steering, steering wheel controls, cruise control, six speakers and a Fine Vision Meter with Eco indicator.

The E gets halogen reflector headlamps, 16-inch alloys with 195/60 Bridgestone Ecopia EP150 tyres, a urethane steering wheel and gear lever, silver interior trim, manual air-con, fabric seats and a basic radio with CD, AUX and Bluetooth.

The VL adds quite a bit more – on the outside, you’ll see auto self-levelling xenon projector headlamps with washers, LED positioning lamps, front fog lamps, 205/50 R17 alloys with ContiPremiumContact 2 tyres, auto-folding wing mirrors and a boot spoiler with integrated LED third brake lamp.

Inside the VL, there’s keyless entry and start, a leather steering wheel and gear lever, chrome-surrounded instrument dials, silver patterned interior trim, auto dual-zone air-con with rear vents, leather seats and a 4.3-inch central display with CD, MP3, USB, AUX, Bluetooth, iPod and a reverse camera.

Most importantly, you get ABS, EBD, BA, all-round disc brakes, six airbags, VDC and TCS – no matter what variant you buy. However, strangely no ISOFIX child seat anchor points are available, only top tether anchor points.

Fully-imported (CBU) from Thailand, the E is priced at RM111,900; the VL at RM121,900, OTR without insurance (with insurance, RM115,817 and RM126,093). A three-year/100,000-km warranty is included.

You can choose from Cayenne Red (new), Premium Black, Bronze Gold, Diamond White and Brilliant Silver body colours. The first 1,000 Sylphy buyers stand to get Solar Gard Armorcoat Tinting for free.

A range of optional accessories are also available as follows:

It seems Nissan Sylphy B17 price is close to Nissan Sentra N16 1.8…. http://paultan.org/2005/10/13/new-nissan-sentra-facelift-in-malaysia/

If ETCM launch with 1.6, price will be closed to Livina, Sentra 1.6 and Latio

Agreed. I think the whole car looks quite handsome but the only thing that turned me off is the push-start button.

I think Toyota’s push-start button looks a lot more premium.

if the “cons” comes down to nitpicking on the material/colour of a push-start button, that really says alot about how good the Sylphy is, relatively speaking.

More choices for the C segment … the all new Altis and this Slyphy while Civic with its’ aging model. Not forgetting Jetta CKD …..

-Noise and vibration have been reduced, thanks to an improved frame- Which is something I find rather impressive of the old car, its so silent its almost creepy…..slight wid noise thou.

Anyways, its priced extremely competitively in the C-segment range, and against what I think is the most similar car, the Elantra 1.8 Premium @ RM114k. The natural advantage are size and safety, the Elantra only gets 2 airbags and VSC while the Sylphy has 4 more….the Sylphy is also larger car than the Elantra in its previous form and since this is larger than the old, theres not much to compare. The Elantra edges out in where all Korean cars edge out, toys; Auto wipers, lights, navigation , dual zone air cond and reverse camera is something you dont get in the base RM111k Sylphy but step it up a notch to RM121k and you gain all but auto rain/light sensors in addition to Projector lights, LED DRL/rear lamps and rear seat vents(a winner in Malaysia).

All in all, in the 1.8l High spec C-segment, the Sylphy is an overall better on paper than the Elantra. Its kinda shocking that ETCM actually did really well with the marketing of this car. Hoping to see more of these on the road.

My current car have auto wipers and auto lights. Even in auto mode, the lights sometimes confuse whether to switch on or off in the morning, and the auto wipers still need some minor adjustment on the wiping speed, though its activated automatically.

Anyway, its good to have. And Nissan should consider those.

For a C-segment 100K+ car, Tan Chong should equip the E-spec with proper looking aircon controls (if not auto). The aircon knobs looks terribly cheap and so outdated. Same case with Almera’s E and V variants. Even the non-V spec City has better aircon knobs.

The headlamps washers should c/w wipers too for thorough cleaning. A dull and boring car like this should have additional entertainment for the driver to play with.

sorry, i do not often write in this manner but i certainly do think that the E variant air con vent is more suitable for the next generation of Vanette if they ever launch again. It is so primitive. Apart from 6 welcoming air bags, it’s too highly overpriced. Instead of saying good bye to certain Korean or even maybe Japanese models, some potential buyers who were waiting in the wings, will shun this car simply of the price.

Sometimes, I wonder ppl buy airbag or buy car one. LOL 3, la 4 la, 6 la… Seatbelt is the thing which is most critical. If no wear seltbelt, 100 airbag also no use. Future tech is not airbag, it will be Expanded Air Gel, which fully reverse and slowdown impact. THe GEL is oxigernized, so yes, you can breathe in it.

Put some additional safety feature and try to sell at RM 112K above to match the Honda Civic and T. Altis.

Just wait for another 3 years and the owner will be crying with the resale value at RM 60K.

Look at the existing sylphy suffering and you want to follow the footstep, please go ahead to buy.Even the 2012 2.5 Teana (2 years) trade-in at below RM 90K.

Even the previous 2007 honda Civic (7 years) can sell at RM 70K as compared to RM 60K for 2011 sylphy.

This TC try their luck to be on par with T & H in term of value. They are not there yet to convince the C segment buyer to buy them.

Latio 1.8 struggling to sell at below RM 95K and want to sell the 1.8 sylphy at RM115K?

TC keep dreaming to be on par with H&T.

When stock yard full of junk then you will get a RM 15K discount anytime.

    Alway the TC’s strategy.

For Honda Civic and Toyota altis. There is not threat from this slyphy where they price it at above RM 110K.

H & T will be threaten if slyphy is price below RM 95K.

Business as usual for H&T. Thanks to the high pricing strategy by Nissan.

The cost of compensation/legal costs for MH 370 will be 1 Billion RM easily.Thats why Gomen very happy Nissan brings in CBU units thro Tan Chong.
Ample import duties to cover this unfortunate aviation mystery.
Same with UMW bringing CBU Altis. Each car will make rakyat poorer by 40K,taxes alone.

Tan Chong and UMW price their cars very high in Malaysia.
Toyota and Nissan are both Japanese.
But why is there such disparity in terms of RESALE VALUE?
Is it just PERCEPTION that Toyota is superior but how come Toyota has more recalls than Nissan?

    ——————————-

Most car are high price in malaysia (2nd highest in the world) except P1 and P2 and all the AP king. Protection mah.

No need to use the perception to justify the superiority.

Just buy the Toyota vios, honda City and nissan Latio and test them Kao-Kao to 120,000KM mileage and you will know which vehicle will need to replace the parts first.

Nissan will give you the problem on :-

    (i) Fan belt squaeking sound at every 60,000km and need replacement. Toyota at 120,000km not need to change belt.

(ii) Nissan need to Skim the rotol disk 3 times before 100,000km and toyota still ok at 120,000km.

(iii) Nissan absorber leaking and absorber mounting need replacement at 70,000km and toyota still good at 120,000km.

(iv) Nissan need to replace the expensive Wheel bearing (RM 900 per no)at 70,000km but toyota still work like a horse.

Experienced learn will be able to justify the resale valua with reliability, cheap spare part and avaibility of parts at every shops.

Toyota can work like a horse but nissan need tender loving and care and come with expensive parts.

You decide. both car are good but need a wise mind to decide which one is value for money after 5 years.

Same new price (RM 115K)but after 5 years. Slyphy 2nd hand value below RM 45K and T. Altis & Civic at RM 75K.

U should know how to make a choice and why T can maintain no: 1 in malaysia.

    • Really? I OWN both vios and city, and recently got a new sylphy. I often use my sylphy and your theory about all the sylphy’s problems? Your wrong. I often use my sylphy and guess what? the mileage already above 120000km. And it doesn’t need that replacements you mentioned. Still running like horse. Personally, i like Nissan Sylphy than both Vios and City.

You said recently got a new Sylphy, but how can the mileage be 120000km? That’s equivalent to traveling round trip Penang JB 60 times. It’s crazy, isn’t it?

      i own both vios , 1st & 2nd gen.
I only got 2 small children, hardly over weight.
for the 1st, <3 yr, absorber leakage, lucky under warranty.
for the 2nd , about 4 yr , absorber leakage, replaced, now after almost coming to 6th yr, leakage again!!!
      1st mileage about 90k (2006 car)
      2nd mileage about 70k (2008 car)
I will reconsider buy Toyota again!!
maybe look for teana or sylphy…v gd spec

For a passenger Jap cars, this Nissan Sylphy is definitely good in value comparing with its competitor (Altis, Civic, M3), though we all hope the price can get a bit lower, but it is difficult b’cos Malaysian need to help protect national car.

Safety features. specifications, interior materials are very competitive. Some would argue the exterior ‘uncle’ looks?? haha, top up a bit for the Nismo bodykit should look nicer / sportier….

C Segment Jap Cars, this one very close in 2014….good to see more competition!!

(hope we all can one day see the taxes reduce and with the $$ save we can have a better quality life!!)
