Proton looking at exports to drive profits; says it makes less than RM500 for each Saga SV sold – report

proton

Proton is targeting to boost exports in a bid to stem falling profits due to dwindling local sales, the Business Times reported yesterday.

Despite the recent launches of two highly-anticipated models – the Prevé and the Suprima S – and the Saga SV and Persona SV value-added range, the company sold 138,753 units locally last year, down from the 141,120 the year before. Its share of the Malaysian passenger car market has also declined from 25.6% in 2012 to 24.1%.

Speaking to reporters at the opening of Lotus’ first 4S centre in Beijing, Proton executive chairman Tan Sri Mohd Khamil Jamil claimed that this was caused by stiffer competition from foreign carmakers but also public perception.

“Many urbanites are buying Proton cars as they believe in the product and technology. But still, there are people who say our cars are expensive as they are locally-produced. It is quite impossible to lower car prices with the rising costs of doing business,” said Khamil.

KhamilJamil

Khamil also hit out at the Malaysian buying public, saying that he does not understand why they are not supporting their own products. “Look at the Japanese and how they are supporting their carmakers. Another example is South Korea, which supports local players like Samsung and Daewoo.”

Squeezed out of their breadwinning local market, Khamil said the company is looking to cut costs wherever it can – including the standardising of car spare parts – which would improve its economies of scale, enabling itself to price its cars more competitively.

“Our profits are shrinking with rising costs. For the new Saga SV 1.3, the nett profit is below RM500 and it is shocking,” he added.

On the problem of public perception, Khamil said that the company must produce more value-for-money cars, adding more safety features. “Our latest technology focuses on passenger safety, such as the drop-down engine upon impact from an accident. This lowers the chances of fatality.”

“We have high-level engineers and designers working on Proton cars. Today, we hear fewer complaints about Proton cars.”

Proton is also eyeing its overseas markets to expand, an area which had been rather neglected in past years – while the company is exporting cars to 25 countries worldwide, sales in foreign markets are still below five percent.

In particular, the company is reportedly focusing on its key markets – the United Kingdom, Australia and Egypt. Australia has already received the Suprima S, Prevé and Exora, and plans to introduce new cars to the UK have been in place for some time.

youngman L3 GT 1

Another avenue to expand the company’s business is in China, where it is currently under a strategic partnership with Youngman. The deal, created in 2007, sees Proton being paid royalties from Youngman in exchange for CamPro engines and CKD kits of the Persona and Gen2 (the Youngman Lotus L3 pictured above).

Proton is planning to build its own cars in the Middle Kingdom soon, according to company advisor Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, riding on the success and growth of its subsidiary Lotus.

“However, to enter the Chinese market, we need to manufacture the cars in China and that will involve huge capital investments. We are looking at partnerships,” the former Prime Minister added.

I’m sure there are idiots still saying power window failure with their very old saga, perdana, wira etc.
Power window failure WONT happen anymore in proton’s newer models, so for the bashers there, get the fact right. “I’m not a proton supporter but just want to make this fact right”

What utter bukllshit. If Toyota Camry 2.5 with 6 airbags can be sold in the US for USD22,000 and yet the US Toyota dealership can still make a lot of untung per car, what bullshit is Proton aka BN telling us?

Somemore you want to export? Hello, all these years, every single market you exported has failed big time. Even in Arab countries where you sell our Malaysian built Proton for half the price (while selling to your own Malaysians double the price), the Proton car has failed.

In Australia, Proton is known to be the most dangerous car ever built. Australians laugh at us. In UK Jeremy Clarkson labelled Proton quality as lower than TRASH. In Europe, the car has failed big time.

So if Proton in the past has failed big time, why even try again? Still using rakyat’s tax payers money and wasting it. Every year government gives our tax payers money in hundreds of million as grants to Proton. All wasted.

Even last month, Proton asked 2 billion. Of course Government sandiwara and said cannot give but we know, quietly, Proton will be given that 2 billion to waste.

How they waste? They waste by putting idiots running showrooms in UK and overseas, how them in posh apartments in London, pay then 5000 pounds sterling (salesman). All our tax payers money. Utterly wasted.

Proton should just close down. Waste the rakyat’s money only. And now, try to bluff everyone you make RM500 per car.

You can’t survive the competition, you withdraw. No need stand there talk east talk west talk kock.

He heard less about car problem, simply because Proton is selling less cars now. The quality of J class is still the same! Janganlah syok sendiri.

They are selling less and less every year. Not even a car out of 4 new car in 2013 is Proton!

Read the comments below then you see the owner is terrified of Proton car problem. They didn’t go back to Proton SC because they don’t want to get slaughtered.

Less car brought back to Proton SC for repair doesn’t means Proton build quality improves!!! Wake up bro!

          • Proton is a DISGRACE on Apr 30, 2014 at 8:23 am

For 30 years we rakyat suffer paying high car prices. All because of Proton. Actually car prices the past 30 years have not gone up that much despite inflation. You can see this from the US prices. A Honda Accord 2.4 and Toyota Camry 2.5 2014 model is USD$22,000. Yes, top of the range cars are only about RM60,000. So, this proves, car prices have not really gone up much the past 30 years. We still can be buying a Toyota Corolla or Nissan Sunny brand new for maybe about RM40,000, up from RM20,000 20 years ago.

So, for 30 years, we have been paying super high prices to protect Proton. Proton also gets hundreds of million ringgit in grant every few years from our Government. This is our hard earned tax payers money.

So with all the protectionism and all the suffering every single 30 million Malaysians been paying overpriced cars because Proton needs protection, all they can come up is blame people for not supporting Proton?

But aren’t we ALL “forced” to buy Proton? We all know MITI controls the prices of other car brands and they are told to price it at least 20k above Proton’s prices.

Tak malu ke Proton? Disgusting. 30 million people suffer for the past 30 years and ALL Proton can do is blame the rakyat for no support? Your own CEO is using continental Mat Salleh car. He should be driving ONLY a PERDANA ACCORD.

Go to his house and see all his fancy German cars. Shameless man.

We Malaysians have the right to know. Because for 30 years we have been paying overpriced cars and our tax payers money been given to Proton in the form of grants.

Proton is the ONLY car manufacturer in the world to get so much of privileges and market from the government. Got free market also, still can make RM500 per car?

Disgusting. The problem lies in your bumi crony vendors. They are all cronies who are overcharging Proton. But all these vendors are all Mahathirs buddies. Sell one car Mat also to Proton for RM100. Tan Sri, why are we supporting these idiots?

It is like MAS, the catering company is owned by Badawi. MAS overpays for per head. Works up to RM200 per head for International flight. You think per head, we eat RM200 per head for International flight?

The same with Proton. All supporting the crony bumi vendors for Proton. Overcharging up to 10x the price of each item.

Tan Sri, stop supporting this crony practice, then Proton will make more than RM500 per car. But of course, you cannot do that. You are just a puppet put there by our Government.

Simple logic: Poor build quality = car problems. It is a general FACT Proton has poor build quality, thus the cars are problematic.

Because Proton sold less car, and the car owners don’t bring back their car to SC for repair, so Proton has a perception that the build quality improves. (Sendiri Cakap, Sendiri Syok)

If Proton can’t make a power window right, how can we trust the airbags, VSC will works?

If the airbags, VSC may not work (most probably not), what is the difference with not having one?

I seriously enough of the Proton 4S concept!!

Hahaha …. yeah those are a thing of the past for Proton, now is able top notch quality …..just like we are made to believe VW 7-speed DSG problem is a thing of the past. Get real …. fact is Japanense and Korean cars are improving by leaps and bounds while our “beloved” protected Proton is still fast asleep selling junk to the public. If you are not competitive just close down and assemble cars, what is wrong with that ?

That is reality, if you are truly good and competitive you should the CEO while the not so bright will have to be your worker ! So proton the not so bright should carry the bag of the successful companies ! simple as that

From my point of view, Proton do really have fairly good engineers and designers. Satria GTi and Impian (Waja) even praised by Richard Hammond, Satria Neo wons many WRC championship in S2000 class, Gen.2, Arena and Persona are considered as one of the cleanest and environmentally-friendly cars in Australia.
The problem with Proton is interruption of the F**KING corrupted government in their business. It’s not the people doesn’t want to support local products, but give us a competitive product, people will surely buy it. Proton needs a more efficient business management. Not only engineering-minded staffs, but also arts and marketing. Key to a successful company is a diversified employees. Dear Proton, please do study from the root of your management to find aspects of improvement.
For people who find me like ‘cakap bajet bagus’ and would like to ask me to do it myself instead of talking, I HAVE once applied to Proton and now currently working in a plant under Hicom.

        Sincerely,
Average Malaysian who wants to see their local cars succeeds at global level.

To compare to those old days (Waja 2001 model), Proton has gone through leaps and bound to improve its QC. My father in law’s 2008 Persona had reached 200K km without single power window failure, its engine, drivetrain & suspension is still working well without a glitch, and most important feels great to drive.

Newer and modern Protons age gracefully and are more reliable. Too bad that some unlucky buyers who bought lemons, or those who didn’t service it well (causing breakdowns/problems), are swearing and condemning Proton like hell. As if Beemers and Toyotas are perfect with total zero defect manufacturing.

After they checked said nothing wrong with the car. Suck it.. I went met up my friend, he did a tuning check the computer, found gearbox sensor was giving shit..

And I did my own repair and modification. No more warranty by proton and I no need to go again to PROTON SC..WHAT A RELIEFFFF.. The 25k servicing, I put stop oil into the engine and running good compared to that shitium 800 oil. Next time Proton, try produce cars without warranty.

for those who never use Proton just shut up. I respect Proton in the old days when I used my dad’s car Proton Saga. He bought the car in 1989 and I used until last year,2013;24 years of excellent job. But, I bought Persona Elegant last 2 years and in 2nd week of usage, my power window stucked and cannot be use anymore. I have to go to 4 service centres to find the replacement part and took 2 months to settle down the problem. after 3 months, again the same power window jammed and I need to replace with another unit. what a great thing Proton did. then, my back door lock is quite tight and everytime I need to slam the door to make sure it is locked. when I send to Proton shop they say cannot fix that one. same goes to my car boot. cannot use key to open since last 2 years(I’ve tried before until the key twisted).IT STUCKED!!!AND LAST WEEK I WENT TO PROTON SHOP ASKING FOR REPAIR, THEY SAID IT IS BROKEN AND MUST REPLACE WITH NEW KEY FOR THE WHOLE SET THAT WILL COST ME RM3++.WOWWWW!!!THIS IS PROTON!!!EXCELLENT AND GOOD JOB TAN SRI!

      Yes you are right. T
here will be no more power window failure as they had re-position their design failure in the aircond vents.
Frankly speaking mine is a neo cps and I had bought it due to its compact design and the car handling agility.
It’s new and within a week after receiving my car date all the a/c vents in my neo had broken.
(FYI : nothing was hung on the vent)
Cost to change 1 vent is RM103.58 and now you need to times it with four plus the labour charges for another RM30.
The funny thing is after a week I changed the vents all of them broken again.(Strictly nothing was hung on the vents again)

How’s that happened? I did asked friends who have neo’s and even saga’s owner. Apparently they facing the same problem.

Is this the quality and reliability that we should proud of?

      Bro Please,

Selling figures does the talk. If pornton is really good, why not people buying it?? Why dont you go to third country like indonesia and see how is pornton sales figures? I work in jakarta for 6 years, i only saw one or two pornton cars on the road during my daily commute to work (total 2 hours drive daily). Do you know this represent how many %?

Pornton already almost 30 years in this industry, similar like korean car manufacturers. Malaysians do been forced to support local cars, but until now, pornton still performing much worse than korean. Do you know how big is korean car manufacturers? Check wikipedia then you’ll know. You have internet connection right? Mind if i provide you the link?

Talk about pornton car is pricey or not, yes it is. Like C segment, how much Camry sold in oversea? Do you know how much p*rdana replacement model will be sold? Amost 50% higher than camry in oversea for same market segment.

By the way, may I how much you get paid for giving such positive comment? :)

Furthermore, mind if you tell me how many part suppliers for pornton are belong to cronies? Dr M creates pornton without any cronies as suppliers?

We support government by buying foreign car and paying a lot of tax! HAH!

Jokes aside, I do not understand why Khamil does not understand either. For me it’s rather simple:

      1. Malaysian middle class are smart, does not blindly support anything.
      2. 80’s kids probably do well today, able to afford something nice and comfortable and safe for the family. I’m sure they’d go for foreign car unless cash strapped.
      3. 90’s kids (like me) grown up being told by parents to “work hard, so you don’t have to buy a Proton next time”. Proton has not done enough to convince them otherwise.
      4. Late 90’s/early 2000’s kids, probably just got their license, and I didn’t see any models in the Proton line up that would attract me (if I were 18). Nothing looks cool, nothing looks cute, and definitely nothing that attract boy racers.

Proton’s car still sells no doubt, some budget concious buyers will still consider them, but they have to realize other manufacturers area also trying to grab their share of the pie. Let’s hope the new GSC will be a desirable car.

20 years ago my family was struggling to make ends meet. We didn’t starve, but we didn’t have much left for luxuries.

All we could afford are Protons. They remember their younger days when they can afford a Nissan, but no longer do because of the protection Proton gets.

Typical Chinese home education maybe, using fear of poverty to motivate kids to study harder. Something like “If you don’t study hard you’re gonna be a garbage collector” kind of word.

While it is not true, the image of driving a Proton means you didn’t excel in life (insert high expectation asian father meme) kind of stuck you know..

Rubbish talk coming from the CEO. He better go study the countless flawed products of Proton. We have given them close to THREE decades to build good cars with government support to boot and what did they give us? Crap cars which break down and cheap plastics which do not stand the test of time and up to today Proton has gone nowhere and they had to even restructure themselves after a buyout. Look at KIA or Hyundai has done in a span of a few years and where are they now?

Plus the Japanese and Korean cars were well made with good features to boot so naturally their own citizens will buy it. Just try to imagine building a car like a Cerato, I bet we will see more of it on the road, no?

Anyway enough of bashing, I have and will never get a Proton until they make cars as good as a KIA or Honda when we can talk.

I think some one wrote his speech for him.
He forgets that the public today are wiser and much more informed as compared to his days when his skin has less wrinkle and his hair still black.

We all know where the profits has gone to.

We all know there’s this thing call JDM which has better specs and safety equipments. On the other hand our equivalent proton domestic models has less safety specs than export.

We’ve been treated like a third world pariah for supporting them. 2 proton models spanned over a decade and I’ve had enough of dealing with them.
Which led me to conclude that if you’re poor don’t buy proton. The time spent fixing and time spent hunting for parts that’s better than ori is enough to buy a better car.

So tell us Mr CEO how can we be proud of proton and continue to support a company that care less about their customer ?

Personally I think the latest protons not bad, like provide multilink and rear disk brake compare with those 80k+ still provide drum brake and torsion beams.
The concerns are the wind and tires noise need to improve,
Last but not least is the fuel consumption, it is quite bad compare with vtec or fiesta

Yup.. even C-segment Protons are using independent multilink suspension (Altis & Cerato using Torsion beam) with higher tensile steel welding and construction. Every car manufacturer tries hard to reduce costs. Try to look at the new Honda City’s engine intake manifold, its not even metal.

In case of Proton, they took the European approach; high chassis rigidity construction at the expense of interior spaciousness. Those who drove newer Protons (2008 above) will notice that it doesn’t break down & problematic like the old ones. Ride comfort and handling balance is way above the japanese, as the suspension, still working very good at 200,000 km with proper maintenance. The engine & gearbox are also reliable, also with good care. Frankly Proton is not that bad, yet its not that too good either to compete with its similar segment peers. At least (for the average joe) it doesn’t hurt your wallet over the long run like owning a VW with problematic TSI & DSG, while providing similar continental driving pleasure. Not bad for a Malaysian ‘people’s’ car.

      • I think the problem with Proton is marketing. Their reputation is badly damaged prior to 2008 and didn’t give consumer a good impression. They should do something to convey the messages to the public that they are improving. I’m a Proton Wira user prior to 2008 and till now I never thought of getting another Proton car due to the bad experience.

Just when people thought Lotus can uplift Proton’s image back in late 90s, exCEO Tengku Mahaleel nearly destroyed proton through introduction of troublesome models. Syed Zainal tried his very best, but new owner DRB didn’t give him a chance. Pity Malaysians. Syed Zainal was the best ever Proton CEO, and I crossed my fingers if anyone can perform better than him.

The first thing DRB did was to fire the whole Syed Zainal’s team when they took over. Big mistake, as i think Syed Zainal did a good job. Too bad… Arrogance speaks louder. This is a consequence of self doing.

They need to at least try to change people’s mindset. One way might be attempting to create a cult car.

It’s almost 10 years since the Satria Neo, why not gave it a last hurrah before they replace/stop it? Use whatever they have now, less R&D needed. Take the existing R3 model, put in the CFE engine, 6 speed manual, under 80k. Call it the GTI or something, 140hp, close enough.

For the replacement model, lighten it, boost engine to 1 bar, make it corner faster. Boy racers are usually young and cash strapped, and does not have enough money for a 140k 208 GTI. When they grow older they might even buy another Proton if they are happy with their Satria Neo.

  • Proton cannot blame the public for having negative perceptions on their brand. Most car owners in Malaysia have owned a Proton before but gave up due to various maintenance issues that made them lose trust in existing Proton models. What’s worse is that our dear CEO is accusing us car buyers for not supporting local brands. Well, we do support local brands, but on top of that we demand for better quality products that will run the daily mill perfectly without burning a hole in our pockets. Koreans support their car brands because, yea Hyundai and Kia are indeed producing great cars and see how well they’re doing internationally. That’s the main reason their people have confidence in Hyundai and Kia.

Reflect on yourself before accusing others, Proton. Yes, your models are inarguably much better than previous ones such as Waja and Perdana, but it’s not our fault for not purchasing, you should do more to make us trust Proton and erase our bad memories on your brand.

Hi Tan Sri, firstly, I’m not sure by what reason that public not support your product given the fact that Proton still own a market shares of 24.1% even though it is down a little bit from 25%.

Secondly, even though your product is perfect to the extend that it is better than 1A2B of quality and refinement and pricing, does it mean we as consumer should die die buy your product just because it is good? No way. And looking at your speech it clearly demonstrates that you have done market research but you have not done “Enough” market research and the thing that failed you is you/Proton thought that enough effort has been poured in, however in automotive world constant evolution is required to at least stay competitive, just look at some of the brand i.e. Saab, get wiped out and need other maker to bail out. I hope I will not see Proton bail out by the gahmen some day in the future.

Why do you think the Japanese or Koreans buy their own national cars? The simple fact is they are sure and confident of their national cars’ qualities and are even proud of it. Proton? Where is it in terms of quality? Before Preve and Suprima, how many years have the public been fed with Milo tin quality cars? You can’t expect people’s perceptions to change overnight.
And you expect people to believe that you only make RM500 a car? Then the next question is, since profit is so low, why do you still exist? Should just close shop, we feel more comfortable calling Perodua a national car anyway!

With all due respect, I think the comments here as well as the CEO missed the point here.

Ever since the first saga came out in 1985, Proton had 29 years of Protection from the government in order to “get up running and be competitive with foreign car makers”.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think any other country in the world interferes in the market to such an extent (AP policy, import tariffs…etc) that gives advantage to only 1 or two local companies.

In the end, Protectionism only made Proton so fat until it cannot take care of itself. Khamil you say we Malaysians don’t support you, as if 24.1% of market share isn’t enough to qualify you and Perodua (30%) to be the two big oligopoly players in Malaysia.

30 Years of history and the best Proton could came up was Suprima S and Inspira. How pathetic, no wonder South Koreans support their Ceratos, Optima, Veloster, I30s… The products do speak for themselves.

Funny you should bring up the Koreans – they’re even more protective of their car market than Malaysians (at least here in Malaysia you can still buy foreign cars).

KIA & Hyundai took more than 30 years to get to where they are now. Don’t forget that when Proton was just set up Hyundai was already designing their own car (badly I might add). They were assembling cars much earlier than that. In comparison to them, Proton is still a rookie when it comes to car design from the ground up – they were assembling cars for the first 20 years of existence.

When will Malaysians learn the simple principle of economics – a country’s standard of living depends on its ability to produce goods/services. From the ground Your typical Malaysians nowadays only wants to consume rather than actually participating in production & therein lies part of the economic malaise that’s hitting the country nowadays. There’s no drive to actually build something that can be of a world standard. If a Malaysian was at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution nothing would happen!

Give up – that’s the typical Malaysian trait. No wonder the country’s in the shitter.

Yes I brought up South Koreans just as to correlate to what Khamil pointed out on the Japanese and South Koreans. But frankly, I would argue the age of the company doesn’t matter because the technological revolution of the 90’s would give a level playing field to Proton because the access to information would be available to any manufacturer.

The point is, Korean car makers had intense competition from the Japanese since their birth. Kia nearly went bankrupt in 1997 but was acquired by Hyundai. Did the age & experience of South Korea’s oldest car company help? Maybe, but they definitely did not have the helping hand of the government like Proton does.

The conditions that Proton started out at was highly advantageous and the support from government was immense. No other car company had the privilege of the market being skewed directly to their own benefits. Barriers were suddenly formed for foreign car makers which subsequently drove out Audi and Ford if I remember correctly. Only Volvo stayed behind limping for 3 decades until recently they had a minor breakthrough with S60 and V40 models.

Proton simply did not take advantage of these benefits and grew arrogant over the years. Such a big disappointment ’cause I remember I was once so proud and admired the Satria GTI and Perdana V6…

I fully disagree with your statement about Malaysians being lackadaisical about production. Just as DRB Hicom are assembling Mercedes locally, we already have all the necessary skills and infrastructure to do a good job in the car industry (Don’t get me started on the whole car-designing vs assembling issue). In fact, Malaysia could’ve become the “Second Detroit” outside of USA if it wasn’t because of the Protectionism.

Too many opportunities have been lost and too long have we waited for Proton to “Grow up”. I think foreign car makers are getting better at beating Proton at their own turf, and all Proton can do is whine all day…

If you wanna talk economics, there is also this economic theory of comparative advantage – i.e. you produce what you have a comparative advantage for. Which is why Malaysia is tops in palm oil, electronics and previously rubber and tin too, to name a few. You don’t waste investments on things that you are never gonna be able to produce with a comparative advantage i.e. motorcars in the case of Malaysia where it’s clearly more cost effective to simply import the whole darn thing from countries who have the comparative advantage and able to make them at half our cost, or less. So there is nothing wrong in not producing everything you need, talking about economics.

Fact he has forgotten, Malaysians did support Proton in its infancy from the mid 80s. Malaysians have been taken for a ride. Are your gravy train vendors charging you too much? So you claim that you make only 500 but the government takes over 10K in taxes. Why don’t you start barking up the correct tree?

Proton do improves in their product. Firstly they improved the ride & handling, then quality & safety. My Saga FLX involved in an accident head on with Nissan Almera… both car equally damaged (total lost) but the passenger cabin still intact! Gratefully, me & family only had minor injury… same as Almera’s passenger. So i think if they can built that competetive product we as Malaysian should support & be proud of it!

Wow Proton, hard to comment as fanboys and basher are countless in the comments and I prefer ,or try to stand in the middle ground.

Proton’s export sales revanue contributed to less than 5% of total sales revanue. Its bad to the point it deserve a sympathy. Proton most succesful market is Thailand from what I gather, and in 2013 they move out 697 cars in the land of smiles. In comparison to 3305 of 2012 and 5530 in 2010 and those sales are achieved without the rather competitive Preve and Suprima S in.

I believe thats the extand of how much we can support a local company. In Japan, people support their local brand because of tax reason, affording a car in Japan is not as easy as some thinks, and a majority ccan only go as far as a Kei car and a kei car are exclsuively manufectured by japanese manufecturers. Korea is ,if I am not mistaken, also car market is controlled by law until very recently. It is also due to political and financial reasons in Korea as the only other car sold is Japanese at the time ,European/American cars are waaay out of a typical Korean’s financial capabilities in the 70s, a country. Both country are also recovering from a war, so support can be given almost exclusive to their cheap local cars. In comparison, America and Europe dont support of their local brands to outright loyalty. Most European cars and in particularly British car manufecturers are dead(or no longer British) US cars no long stand on top of sales even in the US.

Than we come to said technology, the Preve is critisized by foreign commenters of the effieciency…or the lack of it that the engine can produce, in comparison the Peugeout’s ,BMW’s and even Ford’s unit of a similar capacity. Foreign cars are supported by its people knowing that their cars can compete with what the world can offer. If for an example Korea makes PoS, something similar if not worse than Proton’s current quality, you think the general population of S.Korea will buy their cars now? No, they would flock to BMW or and foreign brands with their current income, if tax still goes unregulated.

We have given Proton 30 years to improve, thats 10 less than Honda, 15 less than Hyundai, both very succesful companies, and thats a time we thought we would see Proton being sold in all major markets, with technology to stand equal in the world, to compete in motorpsort. We didn’t get that. And in the years of nothing but bold words but half the achievement, we grew tired of supporting, waiting for our income to grow, waiting to leave the Proton bandwagon. Your price of manufecturing IS expensive Proton. Cut ouut all the expensive tax on foreign cars and equal the playing field to that of USA or Autralia and we get a car thats priced ccomparitively high with questionable quality, right out of your shoowroom. If Civics, Ceratos and Altis were to be brought down to the Preve’s price, if the Picanto, i10 and Mirage were to be brought down to the Saga price(which it well can) What do you think a sane person will buy?

I do not hate Proton, I have two in the house before and they are responsible for most of my chilhood. They were reliable, but when its time to move on, its time to move on, and Preve aside, most Proton cars struggle to look better in terms of quality than my now-departed Wira or even my Saga. Proton’s failure lies in its managementm, its over nasionalisation and lack of definitive dreams and strong leader.

Khamil also hit out at the Malaysian buying public, saying that he does not understand why they are not supporting their own products. “Look at the Japanese and how they are supporting their carmakers. Another example is South Korea, which supports local players like Samsung and Daewoo.”

I laugh. No wonder you can’t make profit. It is your job to find out the factor why we opt for other brand instead of Proton. Hmm… I do not think you will make profit eventually, because from your statement, it seems like instead of finding the reason / working on the improvement, you are putting the blame on us.

How to support Proton? My new one month old Preve has been in out proton workshop 6 times already, and still have two more items to replace. Replaced new parts damaged another parts. Damn, should not buy it given them a second chance just because of 5 star Ancap. Quality maybe comparable with some chinese car 10 years back. From the car itself, can tell many design flaws and lousy engineering practice.

Damaged paint job inside engine bay and under carriage due to brake fluid.
    POWER WINDOWS FOR GOD SAKE.
    Poor paint job finishing.
    Over-fender are not aligned.
    Squeaking brakes.
    Dashboard squeaking.
Radio malfunction; both the player and the coverage.
Engine leaking, from the head gasket. Changed, stil the same.
Mileage: 60k km with all the problems.

Auto problems since owning from Day 1:
When receiving the car, all the plastic tiny bits in the car are NOT THERE (Handbrake cover, door lock plastic bit, seat recliner plastic bit, etc)
    POWER WINDOWS FOR GOD SAKE.
    Poor paint job finishing.

    2. Better Fuel consumption.
    3. Put more safety features.
    4. Get rid of the tyre noise and brake noise. Its really annoying.

      1. The car interior and exterior looks ok enough already. We not buying high end luxury car.
      2. Make sure everything fits and assembled properly. The kriuk kriuk ting ting noises coming from god knows where can drive one mad.
      3. Normal engine mated to normal 5 speed auto tranny enough already. Old tech never mind, must be reliable. No need dsg/cvt/turbo etc. More high tech, more expensive, more headaches.
      4. Fuel consumption 11km/l also never mind. What i save buying national car, i pay little bit more for petrol.
      5. Safety features must have. This one cannot cut. For this i will pay.

1: Govt wants Accord, incidentally Proton has partnership with Honda. So Honda abd Honda built 8th gen Accords (with Proton-Lotus suspension, Proton redesign in some problematic parts) in Honda factory for the govt, and gave the design of Accord 8th gen platform to Proton. Proton can use ONLY the platform to build the totally different upcoming ‘public Perdana’.

2: Proton is no longer owned by govt. So govt dun care. But Proton still can get RnD grant (just like any other engineering company/agency in Malaysia). If you want to build new kapcai bikes for commercial, you also can get RnD grant. Pay govt back if it doesn’t work.

Bottom-line is, people who are shopping for a Proton are most likely cross-shopping and comparing against Perodua since they are both at the same price point. Stop making excuses and blaming the foreign brands which are already at a big disadvantage because of the tax/levy. The government is already helping you a lot. At the price range, people would rather buy a Myvi or even a used Vios or City. Start making compelling products that people want and your sales will go up.

Not that we don’t want to support our own products. The Koreans were not that supportive of Hyundai and Samsung when they were making crappy products too. But the difference is, Hyundai and Samsung improved by leaps and bounds, where else Proton has remained somewhat stagnant. Campro needs replacement, build quality is only so-so on the Preve, shocking(ly disappointing) on the Suprima I saw at the dealer during launch with loose interior trim and all….

Go and sit in the Kia Cerato. And then sit in the Preve. And you tell me, is the Preve a match for the Cerato’s quality? I won’t mind trading a turbo engine for some good quality and thoughtful design.

Why don’t proton find its problem blame the consumer. They should carry survey and work internally why they are not making ending profit and how they should improve profit.
Blaming consumer is just prove they are a not working hard enough .

it is simple yet proton dont want to entertain complaint. my saga fl, not even a year, the faulty came from the engine. engine stopped instantly, without warning on a downhill, lucky no one around, so there’s no accident with other people, but yet my car bump on a tree before it stopped. so much complaint, report i made to proton, n none on them come with feedback. may be on sales it’s good, but not after sales, customer service so terrible. and, proton still question? ya, your product is not good, so just admit, simple.

How would you expect to get profit on this? I remember once Perodua Kancil was out and ppl complained that its light and too small, but it was dependent, people buy it till today!

Proton should fire this CEO fisrt, if want to improve their management. Reduce the tax of foreign car, compete with foreign car maker in the equal and healthy field . If not, Proton never grow up.Just like US President Obama said ‘ all Malaysian should have a equal chances not just for certain race or religion in a country,if not Malaysia will never strong and grow up.’ What a great speech, that is why US have a black people president in a white man country.
We are Malaysian with different colour on outside, but inside are the same. We all love Malaysia. Just some politician playing racialism to gain benefit for themself.
Wake up Malaysian, fight for your future if you want to stand in this world.

Foreign cars in Korean and Japan has been increasing all over the years. If you watch Korean drama, all the stars are driving a foreign brand such as Audi, Infiniti, BMW or Benz. In Japan, I saw that Malaysia has imported plenty of recond European cars from Japan… It is no funny that Malaysia does not support Proton. This is the market trend!

So economies of scale being poor is not due to poor business planning? CEO thinks that making newer versions passenger cars without the leverage of economies of scale to drive exports, competing against passenger model giants are going to help?
No wonder proton is being driven to a corner.

    Solution:
Shouldn’t proton be looking at niche markets where they can be more competitive with lower sales volume? Why not leverage lotus R & D and make exclusive sports cars. where competition is less? P1 already have a motorsports division to promote a future proton sports car. Why must be passenger market, where profits are low and model cycle is yearly?

Don’t blame poor planning on customers. You aren’t going to get more customers that way.

Simply bashing the buyer wont solve the problem….buyers dont think its worth their money so they dont buy it..if its worth the money..surely everyone opt for their product..improve n prove it that the product is worth it..design side..almost improving but..suddenly rebadge of lancer to inspira n accord to perdana..??? After sales which is quite poor for proton..parts which is ridiculous in price..labours as well…if they want comments..there’s a lot..good n bad..dont simply blame the buyer just because ur not making profit..even ur sv package also is not that valuable..cars produce in the country..resource in the country..the price??

Proton should be on their knees thanking the Malaysian public for sacrificing their hard earned money to support proton by paying higher taxes for cars of other makes. This idiot of a chairman should be bowing and apologizing for not being able to produce a good enough car despite all the advantages given to them.

Now, the foreign car makers like honda, toyota, volkswagen has created higher quality alternatives in the same price realm as proton’s products. Why should we spend our hard earned money to buy an inferior product?

I really dont know what to say but I dont think the top management in Proton or DRB is driving a proton car anyway.
The car dont create break down but many other problem such as wind noise after few year, air con tick sound, dash board shaking, windows hay wire and some break or light not functioning properly. Small problem that should not have happened.
Due to company car, I have services in proton workshop, the people there after listen to my complaint, they say buy a Japanese car if I can afford and dont complaint if I buy proton.

    Insights for Proton:

    1. Build cars with quality, that will gradually improve the consumers perception.
    2. Build car models based on consumers’demand & trends, not based on Proton “limited ability” to build and not able to turn into sales
    3. Price it with value and uptodate features
    4. Improve customer service
    5. Don’t take customers for granted as you can’t force them to buy nor ask them to loyal to your brand
    6. Invest on R&D and marketing

Just go to your think temple and figure this out
Lets compare proton to the market benchmark Toyota And Honda if the market is open..

    B-segment car Supposed price (44k-58k)
    Vios full spec
    City Full spec
    Saga Full spec

    C-Segment car (55k-65K)
    Civic
    Corolla Altis
    Preve

    D-Segment car (65k-80k)
    Accord
    Camry
    ??? Accordana?

From the spec, the quality we can see the comparision in heaven a part from the model that proton should be make the perfect sustituion. Not only spec but level of equipment of full spec (whistle and bell is not as same as the full of other model). The FC of proton is still in years of 2003, while other model fc has been efficient and gone to 2014 era. To make things worse the interior and exterior is outdated compared the others.

Let compared your so proud and ridiculous pricing Preve. The keyless smart entry is a joke. No proper market conduct as the keyless system suppose to make no key been taken out of pocket to drive the car. The entertainment system use resistivity touch which make the experience feel unresponsive. And the interior and exterior is really dated compared to closest rival.

Yet, you hit people to not buy your car. Execuse me, toyota and honda or even hyundai and kia can make profit selling at that price range and with full spec (bell and whistle). Your crony suplied part, deliver low quality price at higher price and that is the real root of proton quality problem.

Is this the proton that want to challenge global?

Give us the quality car at proper price range..

B-segment range,44k-55k give us above or equivalent vios or city level model
C-segment range, 50k-65k give us above or equivalent civic, mazda 3 or golf
D-segment range, 65k-80k give us above or accord, camry, mazda 6 equivalent car..

That is how proton suppose to tackle the market.. Otherwise, good luck on digging your own graveyard.. That all i can say.

savvy for me and siter to use …now i bought her a preve..

Interior quality reduces with each generation , waja being the worst , savvy is just shocking with hard plastics all around..

the preve on the other hand needs improvement in the interior plastics and refinement..the suspension setup is too bumpy and the engine is too thirsty..

a proper facelift of the preve and suprima might be needed for proton to compete

Better interior quality plastics and soft touch material is needed!

At the time it was proposed to set up Proton the estimates given of maximum production capacities the figures given were less than the 480,000 odd that Hillman of the UK were producing at that time. I recall that article saying specifically that for economies of scales to be enjoyed the annual production had to be in excess of half a million units a year. At less than half that I could not see how Proton could at anytime be self sustaining. Then I found out how. Our excessively high excise duty for imported cars! I had bought a Ford Telstar 1800cc for RM27,000 in August 1984. After Proton the same car cost over RM40,000 in just under three years later. Proton was selling at under RM20,000 then. And even then the export prices for these same cars in the UK and Australia has always been a fraction of the same prices here. In other words Malaysians buying Proton were subsidising foreigners buying these cars. I suppose it was just punishment when non-bumis pay 7% more on their houses bought from developers in order to subsidise their peers who got it for less only because they were bumiputra. Of course they dont’ call it non-bumiputra subsidy for bumiputra homes. They call it discount for Bumiputras….

Mr Tan Sri, the solutions are quite simple:

    1) Improve the engine – Spend RnD on developing engine with good FC and smooth to drive. The power could be so-so as it doesnt really matter to mass market. Just look at VVT-i and V-Tec 1.5 engine or even 1.3 DVVT engine.

    2) Interior – Invest a little bit in building quality interior. That is where the buyer spend their time in. The fit and finish must be acceptable. The ergonomics especially is important. Look how toyota make their interior looks upmarket although its all hard plastics.

    3) Reliability and quality control – Consumers are expecting new cars to be problem free at least for first 2-3 years. If not, they could just buy a second hand car.

    4) After sales service, the most important aspect for consumers as we are servicing the loans for 7-9 years. We wanted to be treated nicely and not loads of crap given to us.

    5) Create a brand image. Take KIA for example, the tiger nose grille are prominent. Honda has it’s exciting H design.

Please do market survey on what we, customers wants. Most of us wants the same thing (Quality and reliable cars for daily work-home driving). But are you targeting the market segment correctly? Probably we could learn some from toyota. Don’t envy on strenght of others, but learn from it and improve ourselves.

We all know that these will take years to accomplish, so stop whining and start changing.

Once Proton have gain back their “brand power”, I dont see why Malaysian should opt for another expensive car that only have basic features..

It’s not because we do not support our own country cars. It’s simply because of PROTON’s mentality of doing business.

It’s BECAUSE OF YOUR TIDAK APA mentality that made us buy other brands because PROTON is no longer competitive since all the other car brands are now available in the market for similiar price.

It’s BECAUSE YOU ALL MAKAN all the company resources and pass it to your buyers that makes the price so high and you can’t even cover your own costs.

It’s BECAUSE OF YOUR ARROGANCE to listen to consumers and deliver what your buyers want that is causing the dwindling sales.

It’s BECAUSE OF YOUR LAZINESS in creating innovative products like what the Koreans do that is driving your sales away.

It is BECAUSE YOU THINK the government is behind you all the time that you can push a piece of shit and expect people to buy.

It is because PROTON is a disgrace overseas due to it’s substandard quality when you fight with other conmpetitors.

It’s BECAUSE OF YOUR ATTITUDE, your dependency on others and your illusion of privilege that assume that the whole world owe you all to buy you crap piece of product.

PROTON is simply a reflection of what Malaysia is all about. Failure to compete because the government is always there to protect you when you are in trouble. This is what that’s going on with MAS and other GLCs nationwide.

And because of all that, that is why PROTON will fail while taking down part of the economy with it because the only think you all know how to do is to suck money from the government which means sucking for us taxpayers.

Shame on you all for asking such a stupid question. If you want people to buy PROTON, get the KOREANS to run the company because you all are not up to the standard.

Malaysians have no obligation to buy Malaysian-made products. We are old enough to make our own decisions. Stop lecturing around, Your products might be taken into account – only if you are able to make it on par with the market standard.

Bad public impression? Crank your mind and check what resulted that first? Look at Kia and Hyundai, they did have bad impression of problematic engine parts and bad fuel mileage a few years back, but people are buying the Korean cars now. Why? I think you are old enough to find out the answer.

I hope my comment reach our dearest proton CEO.

I own a Proton Gen 2 High line spec and can’t express the so proud feeling after spending my hard earning several months salary for its down payment. Unfortunately those proud feeling went into the drain after experiencing terrible problems with the car. (e.g. chassis crack causing “kung kang kung kang” sound, had to redo the wiring because of short circuit, engine produced cit, cit,cit sound and spending too much time to send it to proton service without the problems being solved).Although above was a 2006 story, with my first impression below than zero, it is hard for me to have confidence in proton anymore. I might reconsider this product again if this impression improve. For you information sir, I still heard the unpleasant complaint about proton until today.oh..lastly the above model is still with me, can’t sell it because of its low second hand value.

He’s right that many Malaysians shy away from Protons but I don’t think he gives a hoot why people do that. Dare I say, majority of Proton buyers buy them because they cannot afford other makes (Thanks to the protection given to Proton). If Proton is so confident they can make good cars, why are they having trouble selling them here and also to the rest of the world? Why do they need to be protected? By saying we do not buy our own products is also wrong, because I for one would chose Perodua over Proton for many reasons. Before I get bashed, I’ve owned a Proton and Perodua before and I can say that Perodua is a safer bet, it even holds better second hand value for those who care about RV. So, get your facts right before pointing your finger at the public. Nobody wanted to buy Korean cars 10-15 years ago and look at them today. If they just know how to blame the Japs and Conti cars, they would not have progressed. With this attitude and mindset, Proton will forever be playing catch up and second fiddle to other brands.

Proton has exported this to Singapore and declared customs cost is roughly around ~SGD$15k or less (~RM$39k) before tax, COE etc. That is manufacturing cost, insurance, freight n misc. charges.

So does each Proton Exora CFE MPV that is sold in Malaysia has a hefty profit RM$45k each?

1.attractive design. u guys fail at that just look at preve. the concept differs from actual product which have that unfinish back look. then look at persona.its already look outdated bcoz it is derive from gen2 not a totally new product. saga is even uglier that people buys bcoz they have no choice.

First of all the idea of Proton is meant for good, to build cars for people and create jobs in automotive industry.
What has gone south are more than we could say in few sentences.
    1) Lack of Innovation
    2) Quality issue
    3) Cronism associates, with related parties supplying low quality materials
    4) Lazy workforce, who starts work at 8, break at 10, goes lunch at 1, break at 3, & go back at 5
    5) Low value for money
    6) Why exported protons are cheaper than being sold locally!?

Why proton complaints m’sian not supporting? Hey Proton, have you heard about our complaints over the past decades? If you have taken our complaints constructively, maybe you’ll not ask this question today.

Look at Hyndai (Korea), look at Volkswagen (Germany). These are companies started with similar idea like Proton. These are the people’s car at first, in their home country. Look how they excel in quality, innovation, competitive. Which created so much economical value to themselves, also to the CONSUMER!

Stop Complaining, reflect and make it better.

I can confidently say that from all the comments given, our Malaysian public has open their mind-set to making sure we do not support Proton now and moving forward as no matter what is done and said Proton will be a failure and 2 options, either sell all your vehicles in overseas market without bothering the Malaysian Public, that way you can continue to screw the government for more money and leave the Malaysian Public alone or close shop for good !! Malaysian made Neslo, Malaysian own Nasi Lemak.
Malaysian invented USB drive. The Malaysian made Perodua outsold the Proton even it’s more expensive and cost more than higher specs Proton, and equally less desirable that other brands.

Something must be wrong with Proton.
Perhaps, it does not have that “I must have one factor” and that factor cant overcome the “I may have to live with unforeseen frustration”

There are a lot of cars with problems, but people still buying it, ie. BMW, VW. What do they have? Packaging! Do you have it Proton?

Go have a spot check at all your “platinum” showroom, see the build quality of your display cars, then move over to Perodua showroom and see their display cars.
Anyone can spot/feel the difference, unless you are living in denial. So, look at the packaging again. How you present the car to the public/buyers will judge on first impression way before they decide to test drive your cars and eventually buy your cars.

And, please have more cars for demo/test drive, people are buying 60-80k of product from you, regardless what model manual or auto, you must have one for test drive somewhere. “We don’t have this model for test drive throughout Malaysia” type of craps should be ditched.

You fulfill the critics than you fulfill the need,
no point feeding half cook product that targeted only at complacent audience. 2004 was a restart point with modern Proton, 10 years past what has been achieved beside putting what was missing 10 years ago?

So, why question Malaysian here, when the number from overseas isn’t significantly increase over the last 30 years?

Another major “Influence” is non other then “Current Government Policies”. This is important because it not only effect Us in “deciding on buying or not”, but also in “supporting or not” our local product.

Now, that “current Government Policies” I mentioned are included everything including Socials matters. International Business people should understand this in term of support and enthusiasm.

    1. The quality of your cars are not up to standard as per what Proton claims. Rattling, squeaking, and all other funny sounds starts less then a year of owning the car.
    2. The Proton Sales and Service centers are a load of crap which are filled with rude and lousy service personnel/managers. Will NEVER admit that there is a manufacturing defect. Squeaking sounds coming from the rear Drum Breaks. Sent for 3 services before they finally changed the whole Drum brake set. Not to mention after every service, they drove the car for approximately 20 plus KM without refilling back my petrol… 4 services x 20km is already 80km…
    3. Service center does not highlight what items that are about to reach the end of life. Timing belts are almost completely frayed when my own mechanic had a look at the car. (I’ve always sent the car to the SAME service center for the course of the warranty period)
    4. The last i checked, Proton Satria Neo Rally car is not even using a proton engine.

Proton should look in the mirror and ask itself this question: “Why am I not being accepted. What is really wrong with me???”.

Instead of shifting the blame to the Malaysian public, I expected more from the head honcho of Proton, but alas, I am not surprised by his “defensive” statements. It is precisely this type of mentality, and from the top may I add, that cascades down to the lower level in the company, like a disease that is incurable.

How do you expect the public to accept Proton when :-

    1. They STILL build crappy cars even after more than 25 years in the business. All you need to do is while you are driving, just observe how many and how frequent you would see a Proton with faulty headlamp or brake lamp, and mind you, these are new Protons, not the old ones. Where is the quality?

    2. They are STILL doing re-badging. Re-badging is not necessary a bad thing, but coming from Proton, and knowing that they need to re-badge to survive, I just feel embarrass about Proton, being a national car maker after all.

    3. They are STILL producing cars which are below par in build quality and fitment and finish. The Korean car makers used to be in this category as well, but look at them now. Need I say more?

    4. There was a time in the past (circa 80s – early 90s) where Proton monopolised the market. ALl the Proton SA has to do is sit their fat-@ss in the showroom and customers will walk in “begging” to buy Proton cars. Thankfully, THOSE DAYS ARE WELL AND TRULY OVER.
Perhaps this is PAY BACK TIME from the public for all the years having no choice but to buy crappy Protons.

I would rather buy a Perodua over a Proton without blinking if I were in a market for a national car. At least I know that a Perodua has relatively far better build quality and fitment and finish than a Proton.

Not to mention that Perodua gives a perception to the public that their cars are better.

    Nuff said.

Our government system likes to make statistics numbers looking good, usually by cutting submission of the complaint letters/incidents, throw into dustbin unreported, whatsoever. If you feel Malaysians are not buying your product, it’s your job to improve your cars and your service to ensure customers do buy it. Criticizing consumers is hardly a way to win their hearts. For this part, Jamil should have blamed the govt for leeching Proton in taxes despite being a local auto manufacturer. The real main culprit is the gomen, becuase of their policy, cars that are affordable in other ASEAN countries became too freaking expensive here, and if you want Malaysians to support local cars, you cannot levy high tax on the manufacturer as well, if manufacturer have to bear substantial tax charges, how lah you suppose they want to sell the car cheap?

Close down proton if its not even up to local car industry standards, we dont have to go international yet. With so much failure after failure with so called latest and new models, the failure rates are way higher. And to those protonfags, godsake for once, please, use your brain instead of being a typical malaysian with typical replies supporting proton. We rather not have a national car than having one with the most failured output. Its a disgrace for Malaysia. An image tarnishing output by proton. Enough, shut it down and move on. People buy proton not because they love it, its because of proton other cars are not possible for reasonable purchase. Or let someone else take over with a different name instead of repeatedly rebranding which shows proton already out of ideas and keep producing failured product and tarnishing some other car manufacturers name by rebranding.

    Dear Mr. Khamil,

I can relate to your statement in which you claim Malaysians are not supporting their local car companies.

The answer is simple, you are not doing enough, especially after bringing out such bold statements in the past like ‘Proton Prevé is our first global car’; and yet, you are only selling the Prevé in just 7 countries today.

Your new cars (Prevé and Suprima S) are actually slightly above average, even in competitive markets like Australia. The only drawbacks are the poor transmission choice, old engine, interior design, QC & fit/finish. Other than that, the Prevé and Suprima S are fine. You just need to fix these problems in the 2015 facelift.

And please launch the Prevé and Suprima S as soon as possible in China, the U.K. and the Middle East (especially Turkey, Egypt and Iran where Proton cars are quite popular and respected as the world’s only Muslim-majority car company). I have said this sooo many times, I’ve lost count. Exporting will be your saviour, not the Malaysian market.

If you want the rakyat to support Proton, you must do more. You are doing, yes, but not enough. There is much to be accomplished, and too little time. As a loyal supporter myself, I am becoming less and less supportive over the months because of Proton’s bold claims and empty promises.

Your new GSC must be good. It must match the Kia Rio/ Picanto in all areas, especially safety and be priced less. No more unreliable early batches. No more ‘good enough is enough’ mentality. Within the first year, Proton must export the GSC to as many big countries as possible, not just Thailand, Australia and Indonesia and other tiny countries.

Do all this and more, and eventually, Malaysians will regain respect for Proton.

Proton has no logic thinking, they feel nobody can step on them in their own backyard what more overseas market, with that ego in their 30 years plus mind, they will never ever change, will still continue to do what they think is correct and when got problem fire back at our poor Malaysian public people, not knowing how many Malaysians suffer in their low quality, poorly design, sub-standard protong car day in day out in our traffic jams !!

NO MORE RESPECT FOR PROTON and AERO you are as bad as protong for continuing your loyal support when they don’t want to even listen to you !!

So you see, all minds that think alike will continually give reasons to stay on when there is no competition coz Gomen protection on protong !! Go ahead and support, you can remain their number 1 supporter and only supporter moving forward !!

I am no blind fanboy Proton supporter. As much as I like Proton, I have absolutely nothing nice to say about BN. I believe most Malaysians think supporting Proton means supporting BN, and in my opinion, it doesn’t have to be that way. Proton is just a tool, the real enemy is BN. If and when Pakatan takes over, you’ll see that they won’t close down Proton, they’ll just kick out each and every crony and appoint better, and more passionate staff, which is how it should have been all along. Proton is just being led by the wrong people, that’s their biggest problem right now.

And we shall see who gets where in life in the near future. You’ll know me, you know my username, I am brave enough to deal with people like you on almost a daily basis. As for yourself, you can safely bash and talk cock behind some fake username. Forget Proton. Who is on the moral high ground now ?

Yeah, if Proton goes out of business, we are left with overpriced Perodua. Average Malaysians will never get the chance to own affordable & comfy sedan. Don’t expect car prices come down if UMW or Honda controlled the market.

I don’t think Najib will give a second chance to bail Proton. Proton had incurred so many bad debts for their syndication loan to revived Lotus (in British Pound Sterling by Malaysian banks led by CIMB). If Proton cannot stand on its own feet to buckle up, then the only solution is for DRB to sell Proton. There are so many potential ready buyers, VW, General Motors and Honda. It wouldn’t happen if Tun is still the advisor, of course.

We, Malaysians should make his accusations come true, just buy Perodua cars and let him loss his job. Let all the crony suppliers die with him.
    How dare he blamed us!
Malaysians were very proud when Proton started to design it own cars but when they started re-badge, we don’t know where to put our face and to make matter worse every new models they claimed “Lotus Tuned”. My mechanic, Ah Hwa or Atan are tuning better performance for my cars.
Who ever is his boss, you better ask “How come he doesn’t know why Malaysians are preferring other brands like Perodua?” Their Myvi has so many cosmetic changes but the basic design is still the same but still sells very well. Top model sales.
It is time you go and maybe Proton can persuade Tengku Mahaleel to come back as CEO and give him a freer hand to appoint or sack vendors.

    Why i dont buy Proton

    1. Old design ..not innovative at all…
    2. Old technology ….
    3. Go back to mitsubishi is the backward looking CEO. We should already have our identity, design and built our own car and engine
    4. No character.
    5. Worst rebadge Honda Accord become Perdana.
    6. Low end car
    7. Low end technology.

    I will buy proton if

    1. It has its own character like the merc, bmw and audi
    2. Latest technology like the german
    3. Fun to drive like the german
    4. Lotsa automation like the german…i fancy park assist…collision detection and etc..
    5. Design and build our own car and engine.
    6. High end car…its also about reputation of driving one. ( why the proton CEO drive proton to office but driving bmw /audi in unofficial event)

    https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/3208612

Proton overseas sales drop 80% since 2010, 5,937 unit compare 29,069 unit on 2010

KUALA LUMPUR – Syarikat pengeluar kenderaan nasional, Proton Holdings Berhad (Proton) mencatatkan penurunan jualan hampir 80 peratus di luar negara tahun lalu berbanding tahun 2010.

I feel a sort of…morbid satisfaction after reading this.

I think Malaysians have spoken for a very long time now, and now they are speaking with their actions. Proton is just responding too little, too late – the usual behavioral pattern here in this country.

I believe people have a right to choose, and if we find no comfort and satisfaction in Proton, we have the right to invest elsewhere more worthwhile. This sort of ‘Live in this country, must buy products made in this country’ herd-mentality is petty and childish, it just makes me incensed. Guilt-tripping and manipulation (another popular trait here in Malaysia) won’t make me buy your products. If your efforts genuine and your products great, then watch it flourish, you deserve it. If not, it’s not fair to cry foul and blame the masses.

Give us a reason to ‘support Malaysian’.

Good luck on the exports drive.

Hi all, my first proton is proton saga way back on yr 1993 then change satria and then change to waja. No, more proton.

Way back from my latest experience with proton is quality control and realiability. I actually give thumb up for waja, actually this model if comparing with current vios and city, can say tak boleh fight but, yes BUT this car realiable is not so realiable. After 3 yrs, I need to fork up estimate mthly RM300 for fixing my car and not including the normal service lah. Same lah, sana bunyi, sini bunyi lah and sana sini rosak lah. Why can they give a better quality for us.

Waja cost me RM60k and on tat time vios only RM70k but u see their quality is totally different. The good things about waja is their handling, vios can go aside and eat smoke but in term of quality and realiable proton kena main jauh jauh.

Not we local duwan to supports proton, buy new car and after 3 yrs need to fork up how much to fix the car, i think Japanese car might after 7 yrs u will have such problem.

Proton been in the market since 1985, how come own engine also dont have, still using lotus dunno how many yr engine as campro engine.

1985 till now, how many copy and paste car did proton done and how many is own design?. What did proton R&D do, makan and jalan jalan. This all engineer should goreng them, is wasting all the company resources without designing any new look and engine.. This torally unacceptable and suck..

To proton CEO, u oledi the answer but seems tat u have deniablelogy to accept the true..

I really envy our neighbour BRUNEI…..had a cousin working there, and drove a second hand 2005 range rover which cost him only around B$4000….I know…don’t compare with them, but hey,Brunei doesnt need to produce it’s own car, she just bring in foreign marques and sell them at a very, very low price…..And if we want proton to be “liked”…DO SOMETHING…!!!!

Dear Proton Executive Chairman. You said you have high level engineers and designers but why your latest product suprima s
    1) rear bumper diffuser serve no functionality
    2) rear light guide so thin more like feature than functionality. Sometimes sun shines but it’s raining. The light guide really serve nothing.
    3) worst part, the interior. Not to say the plastic quality itself. The gaps in between each panels, between dashboard and dot panel – big gaps and not inline. For example, the silver trim between front door and the dashboard not inline properly plus rear door without silver trim means lack of connection inside the cabin. The centre dash also have very big fit and finish problem.
    4) the ICE with navigation. Bad quality display, low and old os, some os bugs. Please use good quality system including speakers.

People, don’t angry with me of repeating my post. However, this s why many people don’t buy suprima s. With same price range, people can get better quality car. For proton, every thing looks so good in drawing board just like interior, drawing so nice, so neat but end products really different.

I wish I could personally tell Tan Sri Kamil, that :
    1. yes indeed, newer Proton model have made much progress. my Saga FLX is not so bad after all… considering the price I paid for…
    2. I still have my full warranty honored and I noticed “Some Proton Service Center” do Listen to us and get us proper update on ECU software and tuning and address defect claims.
    3. However, my frustration is when defect claims don’t get solved in one visit. I have had problem with my rear drum brake jammed for 3 Service repair interval (15k km). It is finally solved after I changed to another Proton Service Center.

That goes to show, majority of the car parts have improved, but not 100% satisfactory.
Your Proton Service Center have got to really make a Big Jump in improvement. Technical competency need to be more convincing.

Btw, I am speaking from my own experience owning 3 Protons – Iswara hatchback (replaced) -> waja (in use and loved it) -> Saga FLX (given to wifey)

Tan Sri, still lots of work to do. Btw, focus your resources to continue improve and don’t go crazy to introduce too many models. Suprima S is a ‘waste’ in my opinion.. cheers

Just to add on with regards to the Saga (BLM) rear drum brake problem. There is something seriously wrong with the design. However, Proton is not admitting and has done nothing to inform its customer. You can ask the guys in the SC and there would tell you how often they had change the rear brake pump. My Saga suffered from this problem.
Those whose said they didn’t have the problem can be due to their gentle driving or completely unaware of the fault. Hint to spot the rear drum brake jam problem, the external drum housing mostly had rusted due to severe overheating. You just compare yours against other Saga BLM.

In the first wave of Proton’s launch, their cars were essentially Mitsubishi with a change in the badge. All else remained Japanese. When they thought they got it made by using govt crutches, they got complacent and arrogant. How many times did you get a “take it or leave it” look from the salesman when you went to the showroom to check it out in the 90’s? You couldn’t even test drive one!

I have driven Wira’s that had the air con button fall into the dash when you press it. The fog lights pop out and dangling, the infamous temperamental power window, perforation of the driver/passenger door and roof at the very same spot (same model, same spots) just to mention the more popular problems.

In fact, buying a Proton was a 90 to 10 gamble – are you the 90 who got the crappy ones or the 10 that had the good (often export) model?

30 years and only one “home made” engine to show for? What happened there? I met a automobile logistics senior executive some years back who admitted that the only part of Proton that is Malaysian made is the windscreen wiper reservoir bottle! I took that at face value. Who am I to say what is and what isn’t?

For the man who started Proton off and the staunch supporter, the good Doctor himself, I believe he doesn’t even have one in his stable during his tenure, nor do I think he has one now. Likewise, the same goes for the incumbent CEO, who lacks the economic, technical or even business sense to comprehend what is happening on the ground.

Proton had a chance to turn itself around when VW made an offer. It would have been a step forward in the right direction, but alas, we all know what happened then until now. So this CEO’s lament is but an excuse for screwing things up and not taking any responsibility. Sound like some people we know?

Now please tell me if I’m truly not helping proton or proton just kill me for providing a problematic car with 5 years ‘service centre trip’ warranty?

Sorry, proton. My 1st proton was my last proton.
    Why?

No Quality. Endless disapointment with the Car. Why should I pay hard earned money on a new Proton yet I had to suffer endlessly due to constant breakage of proton car constantly?

Never again a Proton. I confess that I am a true Malaysian and love my country very much. However, I am not a blind-supporter though.

Easiest is to Remove corruption, part price will sure drops and quality shall improve concurrently.

  • Car in malaysia is expensive, so people here need to think rationally on their amount of investment,,,
To let people buy proton’s, proton itself need to solve their internal problem, not blaming people patriotism,,
    What proton should do
1-quality issues – improve quality inspection and material used,
2-customer service hospitality – not friendly and treat customer like crap (cose)
    3-sales advisor- insufficient product knowledge
4-marketing-lot of malaysian did not know about new proton’s safety features
5-procurement unit- low quality material (fuse burn, preve seat easily fibres)
6-testing team – should identify all the problem at early stage (weird krek krek sound & wind noise, leakage)
7-Management team – attitude toward job duty, mostly just waiting for salary date, not intention to produce satisfied quality product..
However, i respect to proton engineer, they have talent and ability, but management team ruin their hope…
I do heard from Kia articles, the root problem of their fleet is all come from material quality, they manage to handle it and now, they are one of the biggest car manufacturer today…
I do have a big hope on proton, pls do some paradigm shift,,

They want ease of mind usable products. And come on, does your RnD did not have comparison supplier for a better price and quality?

Im using saga FL year 2011

My personal opinion, is because :

    1. quality low, not even on par with perodua (pedal clutch noisy, steering not tight)
    2. FC is quite high (13km/L at city driving, very light footed, at hiway i achieved 15km/L)
    3. after sales service sucks, 6 times try to repair my pedal clutch but still got squeaky sound
    4. ANCAP crash test only 1 star, not safety !

If 13km/l that’s equivalent with myvi FC. Still you say it’s high? Duh.

Another thing, Saga flx+ now has 3 star Asean NCAP.

Given the fact he is ordinary folks same as us earning our daily hard earned cash, would he just get a Proton simply because he is a patriot and leave those probable countless nightmares later or he would be more rationale and make another more sensible choice?

How irresponsible for a CEO to lash out such words thought out of stomach? He must step down, gracefully, or oust in a way every generation after will remember him.

Proton can close shop, says Dr M
    Malaysia Kini, Oct 17, 2005

National car manufacturer should close down if that is what the people want, said former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad today.

According to Bernama, reporters covering a news conference following a function attended by Mahathir did not quite know what to make out of his remark that the Proton management should look into all suggestions pertaining to the matter.

“We just close down Proton if this is what the people want,” said the former premier.

“And if some feel one way to overcome the many problems we hear today – including Approved Permits (APs) and so on – is that we don’t have the automotive industry in Malaysia, we (can) just close down,” he added.

When pointed out that his comments sounded as if he was sulking, Mahathir replied: I’m not sulking. What is there to sulk, (Proton) is not mine.”

When a reporter noted the fact that Proton was his brainchild, the former prime minister responded: “My brainchild does not mean the government must uphold my brainchild.”

Mahathir, who is Proton’s adviser, was commenting on the SMS responses published by a newspaper today that made stinging remarks about the current state of Proton. Many went to the extent of proposing that it be closed down.

The SMS were in response to comments surrounding Proton made by Backbenchers Club Chairman Shahrir Abdul Samad on Saturday, among them was that Proton should not be required to meet the ruling on local content of up to 90 percent if this affected its competitiveness and increased prices in comparison with foreign vehicles.

He was also quoted as saying that if the quality of Proton products were still not up to standard and could not be exported, then it should close down.

    AP issue… boringlah

Referring to his interview on TV3’s Friday, Mahathir said the reason he accepted the invitation was to correct various statements that reflected badly on him, including the one that he had given approval for Naza Ria to be accorded national car status.

“I felt that I need to correct (things). Now I am a little bit bored with correcting. And then people say something else, then (I’ll have to) correct again. I’m tired of correcting,” he said, drawing laughter from those present.

Asked whether he would still continue as Proton advisor, his replied: “I am appointed (to the post), so I will still serve as advisor.”

He was also queried on a letter dated July 14, 2005 he sent to International Trade and Industry Minister Rafidah Aziz in which he put across his views on various aspects of the AP issue.

Mahathir said he thought the letter publication in the media would help explain things.

“I only revealed my letter, not other people’s letter. So, whether or not people want to believe in what I say in my letter, that is up to them. Of course, I explained to the best of my ability,” he said.

When it was suggested that the AP controversy had been going on for months, he said: “Yes. Boringlah.”

“What I think doesn’t matter, what the people think matters. If the people are satisfied that AP should be given to one or two people and they become millionaires overnight, fly around in helicopters and all that, if that is what we want, it’s okay,” he said sarcastically.

Mahathir added that his main concern was how all these had affected Proton.

Proton spent months changing little bits of the Honda Accord for our Ministers. Kalau lu ingat main potong-tampal je, pi duduk atas pokok. Nak retool the moulds, nak pass quality control semua.

As for JVs with foreign manufacturers, this is simply the done thing for companies who are still on the rise. Youngman Lotus, for example, uses CKD kits of our cars. Kalau you tau macam mana nak run Proton la sangat, apa kata you pi apply for CEO position?

What Tan Sri said was right la, rasanya. We Malaysians need to see Proton for what they are NOW, and not what they used to be.

And all this nonsense about Proton being protected by the Gomen. Please learn to draw a line between business and politics. Proton Holdings dulu mungkin ada backing from Gomen, but now no more. Proton sekarang private corporation, beb. Just like Perodua. And Proton cars are taxed just like everyone else. Sesiapa yang nak komplen pasai harga Proton mahal, pernah tengok Myvi di England tak? Why this kind of nasionalism when all you are doing is producing sub par cars, and selling it to the nation? not only rakyat rugi buying sub par cars, but they have to pay tax to subsidise them. Double stab the rakyat. Who profits? Crony suppliers in the name of nasionalism.

Agree with most of the comment. Proton cars have good handling, so so engine, good pick up but terrible design. While they got the interior correct with Preve/Suprima, the exterior design is already outdated. Get it right and it will sells like the Korean which bank on exterior but have terrible ride quality to my opinion.

You can’t force Malaysian to buy Proton. You have to attract them. If the high managements of Proton don’t even own Proton cars and has no desire to do so, how do you expect to sell Proton cars?

Why Malaysian is not supporting Proton like Koreans support Hyundai and Kia?

Look at a Kia and a Proton. Which one attracts you? A Kia. You make an ugly, lazily designed Proton car, and wishes everybody to like it?

The Korean govt doesn’t imposed such heavy taxes on their own cars. Our govt does! Myvi shouldn’t even cost 50k. Should be more in the region of 35k. Thanks to the tax, we get budget cars for premium prices.

If customers compare and choose not to buy from you.Blame yourself, search for room of improvement and compare your product with your rival’s before decide to sell again.
