Volkswagen Golf Sportsvan – production car unveiled

DB2014AU00509_large.JPG.

Volkswagen unveiled a Golf Sportsvan concept at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Today we have photos of the production Golf Sportsvan, which replaces the Golf Plus in Volkswagen’s line-up. The new Golf Sportsvan is built on Volkswagen’s MQB platform, and is the first Volkswagen to be offered with the new Blind Spot Monitor plus Rear Traffic Alert.

The Golf Plus used to be sold in Malaysia – there was no regular Mk5 Golf hatchback sold officially in Malaysia, only a Golf Plus and a Golf GTI. Despite the popularity of the tall hatchback format in the entry level segment (Perodua Myvi), this formula doesn’t seem to work in Malaysia if you go up the segments. Malaysians tend to go for standard hatchbacks which are better looking, or move straight up to full fledged three-row MPVs. Just look at how many more A-Class are on the road compared to the B-Class.

There are four TSI engines available – 85 PS, 110 PS, 125 PS and 150 PS, as well as two TDI engines – 110 PS and 150 PS. All engines are available with a DSG gearbox except the 85 PS TSI model. The most efficient version is a BlueMotion variant consuming just 3.5 litres per 100km using the 110 PS TDI engine.

The Blind Spot Monitor plus Rear Traffic Alert feature warns the driver of vehicles in the blind spot. When reversing out of a parking space, the system also recognises cross-traffic approaching behind the car that can be difficult for the driver to see. Not only can it then warn the driver, but if a collision is imminent, the system automatically activates an emergency braking function.

Other features include XDS+ electronic differential lock, DCC adaptive chassis control, Front Assist ambient monitoring system with City Emergency Braking, adaptive cruise control (ACC), Automatic Post-Collision Braking system (standard), Driver Alert System, PreCrash occupant protection system, Light Assist and Dynamic Light Assist main beam control systems, driving profile selector, Lane Assist lane-keeping system and Park Assist.

Would you buy a Golf Sportsvan instead of a regular Golf in Malaysia?

I would only buy IF it’s NOT of TSI+DSG, NOT 2 + 3-year warranty, and certainly NOT the after-sales of VGM…

Function and form balanced… But the dash looks like Preve/Suprima…?

      • This car, just like all other VW cars will face non stop breakdowns of the DSG. Pity the soccer mums who buy it. They will be waiting for the tow truck with 4 kids in the back seat.

When being towed away, the mom can sit with the tow truck driver’s truck and the kids sit where?

The dark glossy trim, center stack and upper dash looks similiar indeed! Proton should ‘license’ to manufacture using the dashboard design plus the auto-aircon control unit from VW for their Suprima/Preve. DRB-Hicom shouldn’t have any problem. Come on, the Preve is already nice from the outside. Only the inside is really an upset (cheapo aircon knobs, fit & finish etc).

Proton Exora still the best MPV lah. Top choice No.1 for taxi drivers too, it proved the reliability of Exora!

Even if VW Malaysia brings it here the Golf Sportsvan price surely RM180K CBU import…

Then after local production CKD the price merely reduced RM160K…only RM20K discount

Ha Ha Ha DRB will tell the poor rakyat must support Exora local MPV far cheaper RM70K….next day in front of rich buyers DRB play acting again on behalf of VM Malaysia tell them buy CKD Golf Sportsvan RM160K…

Now who is the real actor or patriot now??? Ha Ha Ha

  • Nobody in their right mind would buy a VW from VW Malaysia now. Not unless they are looking for trouble.

  • practical car. Proton shud come out with this category using the preve/suprima platform

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 8
  • I thought the cross touran also using the same platform as golf? If not, it still have a fair share in the malaysian market compared to B Class and the forgotten R Class. So my guess would be this sportsvan will have buyers in our local auto scene.

How many of you guys think this dash board is very identical to preve’s dashboard setup? Center glossy finish, side buttons surrounding the Head Unit and the Top finish.

Very identical. Interesting but weird. Any chance that this is a Suprima hidden under Golf’s skin? (DRBHicom-VW partnership went wrong with secret platform sharing agreement). Waaaah… 1 in a trillion chance of course.

      • he has a point. the golf plus has been a failure in most parts of the world. so its quite surprising that volkswagen still continues with this model albeit with a name change. i think it does well in south america though.

See… today even Germany auto maker copy the proton preve dashboard design.. this proved and showed that proton way ahead of Japanese automaker.. just about the time proton will become world major auto maker..

they not copying Toyota or Honda design, why? because Toyota and Honda interior is looks so cheap and too Asean.. so Sam Low Quality, what say you about this?

Very obvious Proton no need to copy Japs design. They just remove their badge and put on Proton badge. Job done! Save time!
