Some housekeeping has been done to the Land Rover Freelander 2 range for 2014 in the UK, as the company prepares to wind down the current model as well as the venerable nameplate itself in favour of an all-new Discovery Sport.

For its final year in the market, the Freelander gets a new top-tier model called the Metropolis. The new trim level replaces both the HSE and the just-launched HSE Luxury, adding standard metallic paint to the already comprehensive kit that includes 19-inch diamond-turned wheels, Windsor leather upholstery, a seven-inch touchscreen navigation system, a rear-view camera and an 11-speaker Meridian 380 W sound system.

Further down the order, the S, GS and XS trims have all been replaced with the SE and SE Tech models. On top of the GS’ standard equipment, the SE adds a heated windscreen, fog lights, front and rear armrests and 18-inch 10-spoke wheels. Tacking on a “Tech” at the end adds the touchscreen navigation and 380 W Meridian sound system from the Metropolis, automatic lights and wipers and larger 19-inch alloys.

Meanwhile, engine choices for the UK have been whittled down to just two – a 148 hp (TD4) and 188 hp (SD4) 2.2 litre turbodiesel four. The former is mated to a six-speed manual, the latter to a six-speed automatic. SE and SE Tech models can be had with either engine, but the Metropolis is only available with the SD4.

Prices start at £27,765 (RM149,900) for the base SE TD4 manual, rising up to £35,995 (RM194,300) for the top-of-the-range Metropolis SD4 automatic.

The current Freelander will hand over the baton next year to the Discovery Sport, part of a new Discovery family that Land Rover has modelled after its own Range Rover family (the original, the Sport and the Evoque). The new car will reportedly use Jaguar Land Rover’s new Ingenium range of four-cylinder engines that are also set to go to the new Jaguar XE, and is expected to make its debut in Paris this September.
