Mazda 5 SkyActiv launched in Malaysia – RM157,279

Mazda5_SkyActiv_001

As revealed back in February, the Mazda 5 has indeed been given the SkyActiv treatment (joining the 3, 6, Biante and CX-5 in the SkyActiv party), and the enhanced MPV has been launched in Malaysia at Sunway Pyramid.

Replacing the non-SkyActiv model‘s 142 hp/180 Nm 2.0 litre MZR four-cylinder engine and five-speed Activematic auto are a 149 hp/190 Nm 2.0 litre SkyActiv-G direct-injected four-cylinder engine (12:1 compression ratio) and a six-speed SkyActiv-Drive auto.

It also gains the i-stop start/stop system, allowing the vehicle to claim a combined EC fuel economy of 6.6 litres per 100 km. The century sprint is done in 11.4 seconds, and top speed is 194 km/h.

Mazda5_SkyActiv_014

On the outside, it looks pretty much identical to the non-SkyActiv Mazda 5 – even the 205/55 R16 alloys are carried over – but the eagle-eyed amongst you would spot the wing mirror indicators, central touch-screen and two headrest monitors which were not on the original facelift model that was launched back in 2011. Mazda Malaysia says these were quietly introduced to the Mazda 5 sometime in between.

The central touch-screen incorporates navigation, a reverse camera display as well as sound from CD, DVD, MP3, AUX or USB piped through four speakers. Kit-wise, you get auto headlamps and wipers, single-zone auto air-con (with blower control for second-row vents), a sunroof and dual-powered sliding doors, amongst others.

There’s still the unique Karakuri seventh seat in the middle of the second row – the second-row armrest first folds up to form the backrest, then the cushion of the seat on the left is flipped forward to reveal the centre seat cushion that folds out to fit between the two second-row seats.

Mazda5_SkyActiv_006

The right-second-row seat hides a tray with two cupholders and a storage net under its cushion – this can obviously be flipped out for use. Under the flip-up cushions of both second-row seats are 6.3-litre storage compartments (when they’re not full of seat or tray, obviously). Second-row seats can slide, recline and fold, while third-row seats are split 50:50.

Where safety is concerned, you get dual front airbags, ABS, EBD, BA, DSC, TCS, reverse sensors and second-row Isofix. Aluminium, Jet Black, Crystal Pearl White and Metallic Grey body colours are available.

Fully imported (CBU) from Japan, the Mazda 5 SkyActiv is priced at RM153,019, OTR without insurance (or RM157,279 with insurance). Included is a three-year/100,000 km warranty and three years’ free maintenance, and as part of a promotion, insurance is free for the first year. At its launch in 2011, the non-SkyActiv Mazda 5 was priced at RM150k, OTR without insurance.

We’ve already entered this new model into CarBase.my – see full specifications and equipment. You can also compare it against the Mazda Biante and other MPVs in the same price range here: Mazda 5 compared with its rivals.

Did Najib lie to us about the 30% car price reduction. Already 1 year has passed. All cars look more expensive.

Najib please honour your promise to your rakyat. You promised if we voted you in, we will get 30% cheaper cars. Did you cheat us?

          • There are errors in carbase. Exora has one cupholders each side on each row, so it’s 6. Plus 2 in front and 2 at the back of gear lever so it’s 4. Overall 10 cupholders! So convenient.

Another thing, it has second row and third row aircond vents on each side. Keep the rear passengers smiling on sunny days

We only count the number of cupholders, excluding the bottle holders in the door pockets. So the Exora has 6 in total – 2 front, 2 middle row, 2 last row.

Haha!! Good one! Wait, you serious??

Remember, Najib got only 47% of the popular vote. Let’s not get into any politics or fraudulent election processes but it is just wrong to say the majority voted for him.

A side note: On the map, just look how many blue BN seats were won with only 47% of votes.

Being MPV, dont compromise on space.
Recond Estima can have more features than Mazda 5 2airbags too.

I’m in the market for mini MPV and been waiting for this updated sky active, new 5008 and still waiting for Grand C4 expected to be out end of the year (http://paultan.org/2014/02/28/citroen-grand-c4-picasso-malaysia/).

Love the Mazda 5’s sliding doors, not too crazy with the Karakuri seat and kinda disappointed with the lack of airbags compared to 5008. I love the panoramic roof of 5008, and expect Grand C4 to have even better view from the inside (even the front windshield is bigger based on the current model).

Between the 3 though, Grand C4 supposed to be a new model but 5008 and Mazda 5 is just a facelift. After sales service wise, anybody can comment on which one is better? I assumed Mazda? (as both Peugeot and Citroen are under Naza). Btw, I love the current Grand C4 Picasso, thought of getting one when it first came out but the horror story on Citroen after sales service then really put me off. I hope under Naza Citroen is better although I still hearing complaints on Naza after sales service in general.

i’m also considering a mini mpv, comparing Mazda 5, Peugeot 5008, Toyota Wish , Honda Stream.

below in my opinion are the negative points and drawbacks of this new Mazda 5:

      1. only 2 air bags, missing the side curtain air bags
      2. design remains smiley face not kodo design
      3. no push start
      4. no HUD
      5. tail lamp non-LED
      6. headlights remain halogen, not xeon
      7. audio system only comes with 4 speakers (too little and not powerful enough for an mpv)
      8. fabric seats as standards instead of leather
      9. interior dashboard no softtouch material

hopefully Mazda or bermaz can look into above and address them then come up with a better Mazda 5

  • I wonder why Mazda does not give it a new looks now. I opine that potential buyers should hold on to their cash first, so as not to be in a dilemma of buying a new old-car (i.e. looks wise).

Yes I went to one of the Mazda showroom few weeks ago and actually test drove the new Mazda 5 with skyactiv as well as biante, was quite surprise why it only made its official launch now?

Although biante is having the same engine but slightly cheaper and more spacious, the handling and overall driving experience was much better and fun with mazda 5 hands down

  • dual front bags should be a turn off for every buyer if they care abt family safety! get the 5008 instead. safety is everything…pls read more and be informed and don’t listen to car salesman. Do research and know what you are buying. If service is an issue, let me tell you, you hear stories on every brand as it is customer service related…

Is the comparison of this new Mazda 5 with other rivals in CarBase.my true?? The Pug 5008 recorded 656 litres whereas Mazda 5 only 112 litres? Really such huge difference?

    • Paul Tan on May 22, 2014 at 12:31 am

That is what many spec sheets and reviews of the 5008 mentions. But you’re right, it does not look that big after a physical observation. We think the number that everyone has been quoting could be something to do with the third row folded down. After a more extensive check we have discovered another number – 203 litres and corrected it.

Hopefully Mazda/Bermaz is following your site @ paultan and does realised the current shortcomings of this Mazda 5 and improve it soon.

On another thought, since most people who are looking for these mpv would likely to be comparing the boot space of such vehicle, whether 3rd row folded up/down, 2nd row folded up/down, and other possible seat configuration, do you think it is possible to suggest/push these manufacturers to provide such comprehensive data (boot space with all possible seat configuration that they claimed) in their specs to the consumers?
