Another Renault model to be CKD, due next year

renault 091

The recently-launched Renault Fluence won’t be the only Renault model to come out of Tan Chong Motor Assemblies’ Segambut plant in recent time.

TC Euro Cars director and CEO Kuan Kim Luen revealed to members of the press today that another Renault model is set to be locally assembled (CKD), and that it could surface as early as next year.

While no mention was made of the model in question, nor its segment, it’s expected to be a volume model, in line with Renault Malaysia’s foray into mainstream vehicle segments, led by the introduction of the Fluence this morning.

If we consider the burgeoning B-segment, the likely candidates are the standard fourth-gen Clio (Clio RS was launched in March) and the Captur crossover. Is there room in our market for a small French hatch, or are the Peugeot 2008, plus upcoming Ford EcoSport and Honda HR-V/Vezel SUVs, set to be Captur-ed?

On a separate note, Renault group Asia-Pacific chairman Gilles Normand said that Malaysia becoming a base for exports of Renault vehicles to the ASEAN region was a “possibility.”

For the Fluence, Renault Malaysia is targeting initial sales of 100 units a month, moving forward to 1,000 per annum. The company aims to expand its network to 25 dealers and 17 service centres nationwide by 2016.

The Fluence is rather well and competitively priced… then do the same with the Clio. It should be quite successful, given that it is a good B segment car that is also very attractive.

Renault engines are fine. Nissan and even Mercedes uses them. The problem is Proton mechanics who weren’t properly trained and didn’t have any experience with modern engines. Remember back then Proton mechanics were only used to ancient Mitsubishi engines.

If they are smart, they should bring in the Megane and Clio. Give VW Malaysia and Peugeot some competition. With its Nissan roots, reliability should be good. And CKD-ing these cars make sense, they can build a larger part base…

Same old bold statement whenever there is launch event.
I still remember Mitsubishi mentioned that it could use Proton factory to assemble Lancer (not inspira) and export to other countries…

Price this model similar to competitors will still be a miracle to me if Renault able to become a mainstream player in Malaysia, same old advice u would heard abt resales value, maintenance (though it’s free, i’m wondering if ppl would be told something like “sorry the part need to be import from other country, please drive you car here again after 3 months?)

Perhaps it could learn from Kia to price it below competitors in order to become a better known name first.

Anyway, it’s always excited to see more choices in the market! Great~!

TC has (almost) all the Kangoo parts you could ask for in stock in KL. Problem is sending from KL to JB can take a few weeks, but that’s not too uncommon with car companies I guess (what the hell are they doing? Are they sending a courier by foot?).

For sure engine and transmission and other consumer p parts for the Renault Fluence will be more easily available in Malaysia than a Peugeot or Ford or the Kangoo.

In fact many spare parts shops should already have stock of the parts given that the engine and transmission and mechanical parts are the same as those of the Nissan Sylphy.

In fact the gearbox in the Renault is also used by Mistubishi and Proton Inspira.

Just need to look at What Renault Samsung made for the likely models:

SM5 (mid-size four-door car also marketed as the Renault Latitude and Renault Safrane, based on the Renault Laguna III)

SM7 (large four-door car sold as Renault Talisman in China)
QM3 (a mini-crossover based on the Renault Captur. It is the first car of RSM that is not assembled in South Korea)

Logic: these two are already here:

SM3 (compact four-door car based on the Renault Fluence)-

QM5 (the first crossover from Renault Samsung based on the Nissan X-Trail, also marketed as the Renault Koleos)-

    Sorry no Megane

Renault Malaysia has last year announced there’ll be a Clio TCE 120 in Malaysia in 2014… and in 2014 they said it again. It should be by the end of the year. Unless TCEC is completely bonkers, that should be the next CKD car. Selling a fully imported B segment hatchback would bring it very close to the pricing of the Polo 1.2 TSI. Might as well not bother at all. They’ll need to get it down to around 90k, like the 208 and Fiesta (near which it is priced overseas).

I’m expecting also the nice looking D-segment Renault Safrane/Latitude (latest facelift). Would be great if Renault could offer this car for the local market. We certainly want to have more European marques in the local D-segment.
