CarBase.my updated with NCAP crash safety ratings – how safe is your next vehicle?

carbaselogo1

If it’s not at the very top, safety should at least be near the sharp end of your list of priorities when considering a new car to buy. We at paultan.org have always been strong advocates of road safety, and our articles regarding the importance of electronic stability control (ESP) and rear seat belts have been very well received by our readers.

It’s only just, then, that our new dedicated car buyer’s website, CarBase.my, now features comprehensive coverage of EuroNCAP, ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Program) and ASEAN NCAP crash safety ratings for all models sold in Malaysia (if available), complete with each rating’s full assessment report documents for all to see.

So apart from having all the technical, equipment and warranty information you’ll need and more, you can now find out how safe a car is on CarBase.my. The Comparison feature will also be useful to directly compare a car’s crash safety rating and safety features (airbags, stability control, ABS, seat belts, ISOFIX) with other models in the same segment.

As we all know, a substantial number of vehicles sold locally have stripped-down safety features (some severely so) compared to the same models that are available in various other markets. For those cars, the corresponding EuroNCAP and ANCAP ratings may not necessarily apply to the models you can buy here.

CarBase.my_Safety3

As such, we’ve also included notes to address the differences in the number of airbags and availability of stability control (if any) between the European/Australian-market cars and Malaysian-spec models for your attention.

For example, the Toyota Corolla Altis received full five-star ratings from both EuroNCAP and ANCAP, but it did so with a full complement of seven airbags and stability control fitted as standard across the range in those markets, as opposed to the two airbag, no stability control base models we get here.

In this case, the Corolla Altis’ ASEAN NCAP ratings – four stars for the 1.8E with two airbags and no stability control; five stars for the 2.0V with Additional Safety Package that’s fitted with seven airbags and stability control – are more accurate.

Choosing the right car is one of the most important decisions you’ll make, so CarBase.my will surely help you make an informed decision about the cars you are considering. Regardless of the type of vehicle you’re looking at, though, make safety a priority so that you, your family and other motorists are protected.

Now, Waiting to see Reliability Index.

Hmm, if the information for Each Car is difficult to be found, at least a Reliability Index for the Brand.

I agree with muya on reliability index. Criterias involve will be the number of official service centers available nationwide and also parts problem per 100 cars or PP100. It is hard to be accurate but at least there will be a helpful guideline.

Totally agree with Muya. The reliability index is a good indication. Besides, the Safety rating looks like not complete without IIHS-HLDI rating.

IIHS tests evaluate two aspects of safety: crashworthiness — how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash — and crash avoidance and mitigation — technology that can prevent a crash or lessen its severity.

Reliability, is somehow subjective and need massive of data to process. CarBase could refer to the way ConsumerReport did to choose the most reliable car of the year.

Nice one, keep it up! However, most of the car models aren’t tested by ASEANCAP yet.

And can Camry Malaysia inherit Camry US safety rating or ANCAP rating?

That’s why I supported altis all these time. Reliable and safe, not much issue. Just fill up the gas and drive.

Yeah… Keep enjoying ur Kosong car. Many including me had traded in our Altis and never looked back. Never knew how much we had been deprived of when driving a boring A to B car.

hippo is probably a better driver than you are. Being deprived of the toys made him/her more focused on driving better & safer.

Incapable drivers only want all the toys in the car to remind them how much they suck.

Maybe you can also include cost of ownership. If I’m out looking to buy a new car, cost of ownership would definitely be one of the top deciding factors.

For Sam Loo fans out there, maybe you can include the car’s resale value depreciation rate. I’m sure it will definitely help them choose their new car.

Lastly, is the car price quoted in carbase.my OTR price with or without insurance? Or basic selling price?

    Hallo Carbase,

Can u guys update the 0-100 KMH speeds of all the vehicles? So far I checked, a lot of models don’t have this data on your site.

  • very informative website. May I suggest to put the final OTR prices for the car, to reflect the actual cost? Also, it would be great to include safety ratings from IIHS, which is a more stringent test than NCAP.

IIHS results would not reflect cars sold in Malaysia as US market cars are different. As an example, if you notice, the Ford Fiesta and Honda Jazz have very big and protruding bumpers for the US market. Different from the rest of the world.

    please put older model in the list to;
for example – when I want to compare my 2011 car to other brand newer model, all I can get is comparing it to (my car) facelift version which is year 2013/2014. the spec is differ although the dimension remain the same.

There seem to be gaps though. Brands like Ssangyong, that are not popular do not have any ratings or reviews. Hope these gaps will be filled in the near future.

Honda Freed is missing from CarBase.my
Hope it can be added to ease the comparison among other mpv. thanks
