RON 97 petrol price down five sen to RM2.85 per litre

ron-97-petrol-rm-2-85 091

The price of RON 97 petrol seems to have gone down five sen to RM2.85 per litre. The last price change for the premium fuel happened in early March, when the price was upped by five sen to RM2.90 per litre.

The price of RON 95 petrol remains at RM2.10 per litre and diesel at RM2.00 per litre. Unlike RON 95 and diesel, the pricing of RON 97 is minimally subsidised and claimed to be derived by market forces, so price changes happen more often than the other two fuels.

The last time RON 97 was priced at RM2.85 per litre was from February, representing an increase of five sen. It was also priced at RM2.85 per litre in September 2013 – that was a 15 sen jump from before.

  • Yeaahh…I agree with most of the comments here. The G should float RON95 and diesel too and reduce the excise duty on cars to be fair. This will help with diesel and petrol smuggling and makes rakyat happy at the same time when they can but a car with much lower price.

We sort of know how the government spend subsidizing petrol, almost 25 billion. But we need more info:

      – How much does the gov earns from excise duty? Can abolish petrol subsidy do more than just eliminate excise duty?
      – What about people who has no plan to or cannot afford a new car even with the cheaper price tag? That’s cost of living going up without any gain.
      – Let say everyone can afford to buy a car, ever thought of the traffic congestion and air pollution?
      – If foreign car become cheap, leaving cronies aside, what about normal people who become jobless because Proton/Perodua shrinks? More jobless = more problematic society.

I’ve been looking at a certain JDM sports car for years, I can’t afford it new unless there’s no excise duty. But that doesn’t mean I’ll just blindly hope everything turn in my favour so I can get my car, and later got bitten because jobless people will steal my car, I’ll get mug or lung cancer jogging outside because of air pollution, or traffic jam everywhere and no where to use my car.

      It’s not that simple :(

I’m somewhat agree with you. Let’s check the questions that you listed here.

How much does the gov earns from excise duty? Can abolish petrol subsidy do more than just eliminate excise duty?
-Good question. I also want to know this. Probably gov earn more from excise duty than float RON95 and diesel. Maybe gov thinks that rakyat prefer cheaper fuel than cheaper cars.

What about people who has no plan to or cannot afford a new car even with the cheaper price tag? That’s cost of living going up without any gain.
-I believe most of rakyats probably need to own a car as it’s necessities, and probably going to upgrade/replace to a better car later on in the future. So cheaper car is a gain for rakyat.

Let say everyone can afford to buy a car, ever thought of the traffic congestion and air pollution?
-I believe traffic congestion had little impact on this matter. If people have little budget to buy a car but need a car they can just buy an old wira. And also float RON95 and diesel, people might switch to public transport and only drive a car if they need it to

And also float RON95 and diesel, people might switch to public transport and only drive a car if they need it to due to expensive fuel, so less traffic. Even you buy more than one car that doesn’t mean you can drive both of the car at the same time right. But it might congest apartment parking lot though.

If foreign car become cheap, leaving cronies aside, what about normal people who become jobless because Proton/Perodua shrinks? More jobless = more problematic society.
        – I really want proton and perodua to be successful but not by too much protection from the gov by charging too much tax on cars.

        Cheers!

Cheers! While everyone is entitled to think differently, I wish more people would actually think about it like you do instead of “give me my cheap car! Now!”.

Like KZM said, we spend 24.8b subsidizing petrol(not sure how much is smuggled) and only get back 7.4b. If we remove subsidy and remove excise duty, we still have 17.4b left.

We could use that 17.4b on other things. Free public transport for example, just so those who didn’t wish to buy a car can just take the bus. Places like Penang or KL you’d wish you don’t need a car at all, even if not now, surely more people will think like this in the future.

Personally I’d like to see how the car is taxed: No more excise duty but tax on how polluting or heavy the vehicle is, but that’s not related to the topic here.

Are you sure 100% rakyat happy? Or maybe 5% in reality? You miss the bigger picture, without fuel subsidy, RAKYAT will not be able to afford better car even w/o crazy duty & tax. RAKYAT will have to save the money to pay for 2x of food, electricity, water & etc BILLS.
I also doubt bank will give away similar loan tenure and interest rate since car has no 2nd hand value.
Unless Malaysia can developed into high income economy like Singapore, this will be the reality when no more fuel subsidy.

Minyak yg Malaysia jual bukan minyak kereta bang.. itu minyak mentah (crude oil)

Malaysian crude oil is at better quality due to the lower content of sulphur (we call it sweet crude). The demand for sweet crude is higher in other countries as it is used to produce specific products. We generate more profit through this export.
Malaysia then import a lower grade crude oil for local comsumption to produce petroleum products to fulfill local demands (such as plastics, diesel, kerosene, petrol etc).

So there you go. Don’t get mixed up with minyak yg di import dan minyak dekat petrol station. :)
